Overview

CodeRabbit adds context-aware feedback to pull requests, with one-click fixes, custom review rules and the ability to learn from team usage. It can also loop with coding agents to address review feedback, which makes it relevant when agents contribute alongside developers. Reviews are available in pull requests, IDEs and the command line, so teams can bring feedback closer to where they work.

The product extends beyond review comments. Triage scores, ranks and routes pull requests to help teams manage a queue, while Change Stack uses semantic diffs, blast-radius context and architectural diagrams to explain larger changes. Security review covers every pull request on Advanced, and deeper scans can run across a repository on demand or on a schedule. That breadth is valuable when review, prioritization and security checks belong in the same workflow, but may be more than a team seeking a lightweight reviewer needs.

Key features

Review and workflow context

CodeRabbit supports repositories on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps. Its VS Code extension also works in Cursor, Windsurf and other VS Code-based IDEs; the CLI supports Windows, macOS and Linux. Pull-request review remains central, while IDE and command-line access offer additional places to get feedback. Review allowances are per developer per hour and subject to a Fair Usage Policy, so high-volume teams should compare their likely usage with the tier limits.

Triage and security

Triage helps teams focus on and route work rather than treating every open pull request alike. Security review can run on pull requests, while CodeRabbit Security can perform deeper repository scans on demand or on a schedule. Advanced includes security review of every PR; the separate Security Scan has variable, usage-based pricing. These options make security part of the review workflow, though teams should weigh the separate scan cost against how often they expect to use it.

Data and deployment

CodeRabbit offers cloud and self-hosted deployment. It says it does not retain source code after a review completes unless review caching is enabled; cached data is encrypted and expires automatically, and users can opt out of data storage. It is SOC 2 Type II certified and GDPR compliant. The broader compliance profile includes ISO 27001, HIPAA, SAML SSO and two-factor authentication. These controls make it relevant to organizations with formal security requirements, while deployment choice and data handling remain worth evaluating against internal policy.

Pricing

CodeRabbit uses a freemium model, with paid plans starting at $24 per developer per month billed annually and a 14-day trial. Paid PR review limits are per developer per hour, not a shared team-wide allowance.

Open-source: Free reviews forever for public repositories. It is a clear fit for eligible public projects, but not a general free tier for private repositories.
Essentials: $24 per developer per month, billed annually; 5 PR reviews per developer per hour, 5 MCP connections and 1 repository for multi-repo analysis. It suits teams starting with review automation, but offers the smallest paid allowances.
Team: $48 per developer per month, billed annually; 8 reviews per hour, 10 MCP connections, 5 repositories for multi-repo analysis and 10 custom pre-merge checks. The added checks and capacity are useful for teams with more structured review requirements.
Advanced: $72 per developer per month, billed annually; 10 reviews per hour, 15 MCP connections, 10 repositories for multi-repo analysis and security review of every PR. It is the strongest fit when routine PR security review is a priority.
Enterprise: Custom pricing, billed annually; 12 reviews per hour, 20 MCP connections and 20 repositories for multi-repo analysis. Contact sales for reviews beyond the included limits, so teams expecting sustained higher volume should account for that constraint.
CodeRabbit Agent: $0.40 per agent minute. Trial and free minutes are used before paid usage, and a monthly spending cap is available. Usage-based billing suits teams that want agent minutes rather than another fixed per-developer tier, provided they monitor spend.
CodeRabbit Security Scan: Custom pricing, with variable usage-based pricing according to the scan.

Annual billing applies to the paid per-developer tiers, so their monthly figures are not month-to-month terms. Free users receive community support through Discord; paid users can email support. The free public-repository offer is useful for open-source work, but private-team evaluation is limited to the trial and paid tiers.

Platforms

CodeRabbit is available as an API, extension, command-line workflow and web product, with support for Linux, macOS and Windows and a self-hosted option. Integrations include GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket Cloud, Azure DevOps, Jira, Linear, CircleCI, MCP servers, Slack, Notion, Confluence, Datadog, Sentry and PagerDuty. Support channels include email, tickets, community and documentation. This range should suit teams connecting review to established development and incident workflows, while teams with a narrower stack may not need the integration breadth.

Who it's for

CodeRabbit fits small, mid-market and enterprise teams that want more than automated comments: queue triage, large-diff explanation and security review alongside AI feedback. Its self-hosted option and stated compliance capabilities also suit organizations that need to assess deployment and governance requirements. It is less compelling for teams with low review volume, or those unwilling to commit to annual per-developer billing for private-repository use.

Pros and cons

Pro: Review across pull requests, IDEs and the CLI gives teams several workflow entry points, including VS Code-based environments such as Cursor and Windsurf.
Pro: Triage, Change Stack and repository scanning extend the product into queue management, large-diff comprehension and security work.
Pro: The four major code-host options and self-hosted deployment make it adaptable to varied repository environments.
Con: Paid per-developer plans impose hourly review caps, which can constrain busy teams even at higher tiers.
Con: The standard paid tiers bill annually, making the entry price a commitment rather than a monthly contract.
Con: Security scans beyond the included Advanced PR review have variable usage-based pricing, complicating budgeting for frequent scans.

Alternatives

Gitar is worth considering for public GitHub or GitLab repositories with an OSI-approved license: its free-for-open-source plan includes Pro features at no cost. Review Board is an open-source option with a free Community plan for teams that prefer an MIT-licensed platform. Sourcery offers public repositories AI reviews, summaries, diagrams, one-click fixes and custom rules at no cost, making it a focused alternative for open-source review needs. Greptile has a free Starter plan with 50 credits per month, one active developer and unlimited repositories, which may suit a solo developer testing a credit-based option.

CodeAnt AI is a paid alternative with a 14-day free trial and a Blackbox Pentesting plan that includes one full AI pentest scan. Bito offers annual AI Code Reviews Team pricing at $12 monthly per seat, with 5K lines per seat per month included, a lower stated seat price for teams whose needs fit that allowance. CodeKang has a free web plan with five private repositories and basic AI summaries, which may suit teams wanting a web-based starting point. Mira is a free self-hosted option with all features included and no paid tier or license key; users pay their LLM provider costs directly.

Verdict

Choose CodeRabbit if your team wants AI review combined with pull-request triage and security workflows across multiple code hosts, and can work within per-developer hourly limits and annual billing. Look elsewhere if you need predictable high-volume review beyond those caps, a month-to-month paid plan, or a simpler free option for private repositories.
