Overview

CoinTracking combines portfolio analysis, transaction imports, and tax reporting in one service. Its reports cover more than 100 countries, including IRS Form 8949, Schedule D, HMRC, ATO, DATEV, Elster, and BMF formats. That breadth is valuable for people whose filing requirements go beyond a basic gains summary, but the free tier is portfolio-view only and is not a substitute for paid tax reporting.

Imports cover more than 400 exchanges, wallets, and blockchains through API, CSV, or blockchain-address imports. Automatic detection of DeFi swaps, staking rewards, NFT trades, and margin positions can reduce categorization work for users with less conventional activity. The 25+ customizable reports, interactive charts, and profit-and-loss reports also make the product useful for ongoing portfolio review, not just tax season.

Key features

Imports and categorization

The broad import coverage is a practical strength for anyone consolidating several sources into one transaction history. Read-only exchange API keys cannot trade or withdraw, limiting the permissions CoinTracking needs for syncing. Automatic categorization addresses common complex activity, including DeFi, staking, NFTs, and margin positions, though the paid plan's transaction ceiling still determines whether the service fits a high-volume account.

Tax and portfolio tools

Country-specific reports are the central reason to choose CoinTracking over a tracker focused only on balances. The range of formats supports different filing contexts, while customizable analytics help users examine gains and holdings across their history. AI Tax Saver, a CSV File Converter, and Source of Funds add further tools, with availability varying by plan and country.

Security, support, and mobile

CoinTracking states that it holds ISO/IEC 27001:2017 certification, stores user data on servers in Germany, encrypts it at rest and in transit, and handles it under GDPR compliance. iOS and Android apps sync with an existing account, so mobile access extends an established portfolio rather than creating a separate workflow. Tutorials, support, and a tax-professional directory with 504 CPAs from 95 countries provide routes to assistance; Expert specifically includes priority support.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides portfolio viewing. Its seven-day trial allows unlimited imports, with no credit card required, but that trial window should not be confused with ongoing access to paid reporting. Starter begins at 49.00 USD per year and permits 200 transactions, with 25+ reports, access to 400+ exchanges and wallets, and two backups. It is the lowest-cost paid choice, but the 200-transaction cap makes it a poor fit for active traders or long histories.

Pro costs 169.00 USD per year for 3,500 transactions, auto-sync, API access, and five backups. It is a substantial step up from Starter for users who need syncing and more room for activity, but users exceeding its cap need a different tier. Expert costs 259.00 USD per year and offers a selectable transaction limit, priority support, auto-sync, API access, and ten backups. That flexibility better suits heavier or professional use, although the transaction limit is selectable rather than stated as unlimited.

Unlimited costs 899.00 USD per year and includes unlimited transactions, advanced tools, an expert session, and 20 backups. It is the clear option for users who cannot work within fixed transaction ceilings, but its price is difficult to justify for modest portfolios. Corporate pricing is custom pricing; it includes three unlimited accounts, multi-client management, individual branding, and features for CPAs, accountants, and financial professionals. Those provisions are aimed at client work rather than an individual investor.

Platforms

CoinTracking is available on web, Android, and iOS, and offers an API. The mobile apps sync with an existing account, while API access is included in Pro and Expert; this makes plan choice relevant for teams integrating the service into an existing workflow.

Who it's for

CoinTracking fits investors who need broad imports, detailed portfolio analysis, and tax reports matched to a country or filing format. It is also a credible option for accounting and tax professionals handling multiple clients through Corporate features. A casual holder who only needs a simple portfolio view can use the free tier, but anyone seeking tax reports will need to budget for a paid plan. High-volume users should compare their transaction count with the tier caps before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Imports span 400+ exchanges, wallets, and blockchains, reducing the need to maintain separate records across sources.
Pro: More than 100 countries and multiple named tax formats give users with jurisdiction-specific filing needs meaningful coverage.
Pro: Automatic detection for DeFi, staking, NFT, and margin activity addresses categories that can complicate manual reconciliation.
Pro: Read-only API permissions, German data storage, encryption, and stated ISO certification offer concrete safeguards for connected financial data.
Con: The free plan is limited to portfolio viewing, so tax reporting requires a paid subscription.
Con: Starter's 200-transaction and Pro's 3,500-transaction limits can constrain users with large histories; escaping a fixed cap means paying for Expert or Unlimited.
Con: Unlimited costs 899.00 USD per year, a steep commitment for users who do not need unlimited transaction capacity and advanced tools.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, start with Crypto Tax Software, Crypto Accounting Software, or Portfolio Management Software.

CoinLedger is worth comparing if a web-based option with free portfolio tracking and unlimited exchange and wallet connections is the priority; its Hobbyist tier is a one-time purchase rather than an annual CoinTracking subscription.
Coinpanda is an alternative for users who want Android and iOS apps and can work within a 25-transaction free tax-year allowance or a 100-transaction Hodler tier.
Koinly suits readers prioritizing its free plan's stated 10,000 transactions, unlimited wallets and exchange accounts, portfolio tracking, and capital-gains preview.
Ledgible is another freemium option; its Professional Tax plan starts at 49.00 USD per contact, with transaction tiers mentioned.
rotki is the alternative to consider when Linux, macOS, Windows, or self-hosted deployment matters more than CoinTracking's web-and-mobile platform mix.
ZenLedger offers a free plan with free tax reports, while its Silver plan is 49.00 USD per year for up to 100 transactions and DeFi, staking, and margin support.
Awaken Tax is another freemium web-based alternative.
Bitcoin.Tax may suit users who can stay within its free allowance of 20 trading transactions or its 59.95 USD per once Premium tier for up to 1,000 transactions per tax year.

Verdict

Choose CoinTracking if your crypto records span many sources and you need both portfolio analysis and tax reporting in a specific jurisdiction. Its import breadth, activity categorization, and extensive reporting make it more capable than a basic tracker. Look elsewhere if you only need lightweight monitoring, or if your transaction volume makes the lower paid caps uneconomical; the unlimited tier is powerful but costly.
