Overview

The EDGE is takeoff and estimating software for commercial specialty subcontractors, bringing blueprint measurements, labor budgets and bids into one workflow. It is best suited to teams estimating trades such as roofing, drywall or concrete; its Windows desktop requirement and custom pricing make it a more considered choice for teams with mixed devices or smaller budgets.

Key features

Takeoff measurements feed estimates that populate material lists and labor budgets, tying quantity work to cost planning rather than leaving estimators to rebuild figures in a separate workflow. Smart Labor lets users adjust production rates, labor time and costs around job conditions they define, which makes labor assumptions adaptable but dependent on the team's inputs.

Trade-specific manufacturer components and databases can be customized to a contractor's business. Proposal Writer uses Microsoft Word templates and more than 100 preloaded data points to generate bid proposals. Users can copy estimate scenarios, compare bid variations and create change orders from existing estimate data, while customizable reports support project management, accounting and customer communication.

The EDGE Construction Cloud stores bids and shared data for real-time collaboration among estimators. The FOUNDATION integration syncs cost codes and classes and can pass awarded project information and budgets to FOUNDATION. Other named integrations include Procore and FollowUp CRM, with takeoff connections to EagleView and Workpack; an EDGE API documentation guide supports integration work. The cloud service stores bids and manufacturer databases in IBM Cloud, with geographic replication and infrastructure security patches managed by Estimating Edge.

Pricing

The EDGE uses paid, custom pricing; request a demo for pricing. No plan price or seat terms are given, so teams should confirm costs and licensing before comparing it with per-seat or per-computer products.

The EDGE plan includes concrete estimating, bid management, production tracking and job costing. That breadth makes it relevant to contractors wanting estimating connected to downstream work, but without a published price teams cannot assess its fit against a defined budget from the plan alone.

Platforms

The EDGE Estimator v12 requires Windows 11 Pro 64-bit and is installed locally. The vendor says Intel and Apple silicon Macs can run it through Parallels or Boot Camp/VMware Fusion with Windows installed, but that adds a Windows setup to Mac-based workflows. Cloud access supports remote work and collaboration; EDGE On Site runs on compatible iPads so foremen or project managers can track production progress in the field. The product also identifies API and web platforms.

Free support webinars are available to customers current on maintenance, making ongoing maintenance status relevant to teams that rely on that training.

Who it's for

The EDGE is aimed at commercial specialty trade subcontractors and construction estimators who need trade-specific takeoff, estimating and bid workflows. Its reporting, production tracking and accounting connection can suit teams carrying estimates into project management and job costing. It is less compelling for teams seeking a low-cost, published-price entry point or a native Mac estimator.

Pros and cons

Pros: Takeoff measurements feed estimates and material and labor budgets, reducing the break between quantity work and pricing.
Pros: Scenario comparison, bid proposals and change orders build on estimate data, useful for managing bid variations and follow-on changes.
Pros: Trade-specific databases, customizable reports, cloud collaboration and named integrations address workflows beyond estimating alone.
Cons: Custom pricing and no published plan terms make budget and licensing comparisons difficult before a demo.
Cons: The estimator requires Windows 11 Pro 64-bit; Mac teams need a Windows virtualization or dual-boot setup.
Cons: The mobile companion is iPad-based, so field production tracking is not described for other mobile platforms.

Alternatives

For painting contractors, Painting Contractor Software is a category shortlist; for concrete teams, Concrete Contractor Software narrows the search to that trade. Broader comparisons are available in Construction Takeoff Software and Construction Estimating Software.

TradeTek is a paid Windows and macOS option at 99.00 USD per month per computer, with tech support and updates included; consider it when a published per-computer monthly price and Mac support matter more than The EDGE's described trade-focused workflow.

PaintQuote Pro, PaintClarity, Painter's Log, PaintWiser, Surfacely, PaintLogic and DripJobs are additional alternatives to compare.

Verdict

The EDGE is a strong fit for commercial specialty subcontractors that want takeoff, estimating, bid management and production tracking connected in a trade-aware system. Its most persuasive advantage is the path from blueprint quantities through labor and material budgeting to bids and reporting. Look elsewhere if your team needs transparent pricing, a native Mac estimator or broader mobile coverage.
