Overview

DocMake turns template fields and data into Word files or PDFs, using the same layout for both outputs. The visual, Word-like editor supports blanks, conditional sections, and repeatable content, so teams can build templates without learning a template syntax. Importing existing DOCX files preserves headings, tables, headers, and footers as editable template elements, which makes it a plausible fit for organizations with established Word documents rather than a blank-slate redesign.

There are three ways to generate documents: fill a template in the app, send a form link to someone who does not need an account, or submit JSON through the REST API. That range works for both occasional staff use and automated workflows. The central tradeoff is capacity: when a workspace reaches its monthly document allowance, generation pauses until the next cycle or an upgrade; overages are not silently billed.

Key features

Templates and output

DOCX import and the visual editor make it easier to preserve existing document structure while adding dynamic sections. Native DOCX and print-accurate PDF output from one template reduce the need to maintain separate layouts for editing and distribution. Conditional logic and repeatable content support documents that vary with the input, while bulk generation serves batch workflows.

Generation and API

Form links are useful when information must come from people outside the workspace, while the REST API supports programmatic generation from JSON. Its documented operations cover template management, DOCX import, batch jobs, assets, and usage; bearer-token authentication and rate-limit headers give developers familiar controls and operational signals. The daily API-call ceilings still matter for higher-volume integrations.

Team and AI tools

Team workspaces include shared templates, per-team API keys, custom fonts, and an audit log. AI can draft template content, and translation into eight languages retains template structure and blanks. The MCP server works with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, including on Free; that is a useful additional route for teams already using MCP, not a substitute for checking document and API quotas.

Pricing

DocMake is freemium, with a no-time-limit Free plan that also serves as its trial and requires no credit card. The Free allowance is 1,000 documents per month, unlimited templates, one seat, 20 AI credits per month, API access at 500 calls per day, and 50 MB of asset storage. Documents carry a small “Generated with DocMake” footer. It is a reasonable way for an individual to assess a workflow, but the seat, storage, call, and branding limits constrain team and production use.

Pro costs 29.00 USD per month, billed $29 per month, or $299/year (save 14%). It raises the allowance to 10,000 documents per month, 10 seats, 500 AI credits per month, 50,000 API calls per day, and 5 GB of asset storage. It also removes the footer with custom branding and adds an audit log and priority support. For a team needing branded output, shared work, or a materially larger API and document budget, this is the most direct step up.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes unlimited documents, seats, AI credits, API calls, and asset storage, plus SSO, custom branding, an audit log, and priority support. It fits organizations whose scale or sign-in requirements exceed Pro’s fixed allowances. On every plan, the document allowance is a hard stop rather than a silent overage charge.

Platforms

DocMake is available on the web and through an API. The REST API and JSON input make it relevant to software teams integrating document generation into an existing stack; web access covers template authoring and app-based generation. An MCP server adds compatibility with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Who it's for

Choose DocMake when your workflow depends on reusable Word-based templates, needs both DOCX and PDF, or should support a mix of staff entry, external form completion, and automated JSON generation. It is also a fit for teams migrating existing DOCX documents into a data-driven process. Look elsewhere if you need more than 10,000 monthly documents or 10 seats but do not want custom pricing, or if the Free footer and single-seat limit are unacceptable.

Pros and cons

Pros: DOCX import preserves key document structure, reducing the burden of rebuilding established templates.
Pros: App, no-account form links, and REST API provide distinct ways to collect data and generate the same document types.
Pros: Pro’s 10 seats, 10,000 monthly documents, and 50,000 daily API calls support a broader team workflow than Free.
Cons: Free is limited to one seat and adds a DocMake footer, so it is better for evaluation or individual use than polished team output.
Cons: Reaching the monthly document allowance pauses new generation, which requires teams to plan around quotas or upgrade.
Cons: Enterprise uses custom pricing, so teams needing its unlimited allowances or SSO must pursue a separate price rather than select a published tier.

Alternatives

PandaDoc is worth considering if Android or iOS support matters; its Free plan has a yearly 60-document allowance and two recipients per document, making it a different fit from DocMake’s higher monthly document quota and template-focused workflow.

DocPayload suits teams prioritizing self-hosting or a pay-as-you-go option; its Starter plan allows up to five documents, while its listed Pay-as-you-go option is 0.50 USD per once.

DocuGenerate is a lower-volume API alternative, with a Free plan of 20 documents per month, two templates, and one concurrent document.

PDF4me Merge & Split is an alternative for API-based PDF merge-and-split workflows, with a free API tier and a 25.00 USD one-time Pack 500.

TemplateDocs is another web-and-API freemium option, with a Free plan of 50 credits, two seats, five templates, and five workflows; its free trial is not offered.

Docassemble is the option to consider when self-hosted, free software is the priority; hosting typically costs $10–$40 per month or more depending on performance, availability, and support needs.

Proposify is a paid alternative with a Basic plan at 29.00 USD per month, 10 sends per month, a $0.50 per-send overage, and unlimited documents.

SmartCOMM is an enterprise solution whose pricing varies by communication volume, type, and user licenses.

Verdict

DocMake is a strong fit for teams that want to turn existing or newly designed Word templates into both DOCX and PDF documents through app, form, or API workflows. Its standout advantage is the breadth of generation paths paired with editable DOCX imports; its key constraint is quota-based capacity, with generation stopping at the plan limit. Start on Free for individual evaluation, choose Pro for branded team use and substantially higher allowances, and look elsewhere if your requirements call for self-hosting or a different volume and pricing model.
