Overview

ProGet brings private package feeds and Docker registries under one roof, with deployment options for self-hosting or cloud VMs and containers. Its support for 22 formats makes it a practical fit for mixed-language stacks, while vulnerability scanning, approval workflows and fine-grained feed access help teams govern what enters and leaves their repositories. A single-ecosystem project that needs only a basic registry may not benefit enough from that breadth.

The Free Edition is commercially usable and includes unlimited feeds for private packages and Docker, but its security and compliance capabilities are limited. Since every edition is licensed annually per server, teams should also account for separate licenses for test and development installations.

Key features

Package intake and policy

ProGet supports NuGet, PyPI, Conda, npm, Ruby Gems, Maven, Chocolatey, PowerShell/DSC, RPM/Yum, Debian/apt and Alpine/APK packages. It can cache upstream packages locally, send them through approval workflows, detect licenses and block packages that fail policy checks. That combination suits teams that want a controlled internal source rather than relying on developers to select packages directly from public feeds.

Retention rules and fine-grained access control add useful repository hygiene and permission management. Connectors can aggregate feeds from ProGet, NuGet.org, Azure DevOps Packages and Artifactory, which can help teams consolidate package sources already in use.

Containers and delivery

ProGet can host private Docker registries, scan container contents for vulnerable packages and restrict production to approved images. It integrates with nearly any CI/CD tool, with a CLI and HTTP API for identifying components and publishing SBOMs. These controls are relevant to teams that want artifact governance tied into delivery pipelines; they are more than a basic image store requires.

Operations and deployment

Windows installation is managed through Inedo Hub; Linux hosting uses Docker. Cloud VM and container deployment are also supported. The Linux installation guide recommends at least 2 vCPU and 2 GB RAM for the container, while ProGet itself uses less than 1 GB of disk space. Load balancing, high availability and feed replication support larger deployments and disaster recovery. Asset Directories can store or replicate assets across S3, Google Cloud, Azure, local storage and the cloud.

LDAP and SAML support help integrate identity management, including SSO through SAML. Inedo says its Security Labs maintains a vulnerability database and allocates 10% of its resources to cybersecurity research. Engineer-led forum support is available, paid users can open private tickets, and professional services cover training, maintenance and custom scripts or plug-ins.

Pricing

ProGet is freemium, with annual per-server licensing for paid editions. All editions allow unlimited users and feeds, but each test or development installation needs its own license. That structure avoids per-seat fees while making multi-environment costs an important part of the decision.

ProGet Free Edition: 0.00 USD per free. It offers unlimited feeds for private packages and Docker and can be used commercially. Its limited security and compliance features make it a better fit for basic repository needs than regulated or policy-heavy workflows.
Basic: 2395.00 USD per year, billed $2,395/year. Intended for small teams with basic security needs; the lower price comes with a narrower security remit than enterprise editions.
Cloud Edition: 4895.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $4,895/yr. It includes managed services, proactive monitoring, 20TB bandwidth and 400GB storage, making it the option for teams that want operations handled rather than a self-managed installation.
Enterprise Essentials: 11995.00 USD per year, billed $11,995/year. It targets enterprise-level security, protection and compliance requirements.
ISV Edition: 11995.00 USD per year, billed Starting from $11,995/yr. Its customer download center and support for licensed products suit software vendors maintaining distribution for their customers.
Enterprise Complete: 29995.00 USD per year, billed Starting From $29,995/year. It includes multiple licenses for production and sandbox use and dedicated support, which matters to organizations needing those environments under one offering.
Edge Edition: 59995.00 USD per year, billed Starting at $59,995/yr. It combines ProGet Enterprise features with edge nodes, dashboards and scalable pricing for distributed deployments.

A free trial is available. The paid editions’ annual per-server terms and additional licenses for test or development should be included when comparing total deployment cost.

Platforms

ProGet supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms. It can be deployed self-hosted or in the cloud, giving teams a choice between managing the repository themselves and using the Cloud Edition’s managed services. Named integrations include AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, LDAP, Active Directory, SAML and CI/CD tools.

Who it's for

ProGet is a strong fit for small, mid-market and enterprise teams that manage multiple package ecosystems or need to gate package and container intake with security and compliance policies. Its unlimited users and feeds can suit broad internal adoption, while its deployment and storage options accommodate varied infrastructure. Teams with only basic registry needs, or those unwilling to license each server and non-production installation annually, should compare narrower or usage-based options.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad format support, caching and feed aggregation can consolidate packages from many ecosystems and sources.
Pro: Vulnerability scanning, license detection, approval workflows and fine-grained access control give teams meaningful intake and release gates.
Pro: Unlimited users and feeds across editions avoid per-seat and feed-count restrictions.
Con: Free Edition limits security and compliance features, so governance-focused teams may need a paid plan.
Con: Annual per-server licensing, plus separate test and development licenses, can raise costs for multi-environment deployments.
Con: The extensive policy and operations feature set may be unnecessary for teams that only need a simple registry.

Alternatives

8gears Container Registry is worth considering for an individual needing a free plan with 1 GB storage, unlimited private repositories and community support; its Enterprise plan has custom pricing.

JFrog Container Registry may suit teams seeking a free, self-managed edition for Docker, OCI, Helm, Helm OCI and Generic artifacts, provided they do not need Xray.

KakaoCloud Container Registry offers 30 GiB free outbound traffic, then charges 90 won/GiB through 10 TiB and 80 won/GiB beyond that range; VAT is excluded. Consider it when outbound-traffic pricing is a better fit.

Quay is an option for teams seeking the Apache 2 open-source community distribution, which requires a database and reliable image storage.

Satama Container Registry offers a free-of-charge option only for use cases that meet CSC’s policy; other users should contact CSC Service Desk.

Yandex SpeechKit is another listed alternative.

Amazon Elastic Container Registry is another listed alternative.

Volcengine Container Registry is another listed alternative.

Verdict

Choose ProGet if your team needs a self-hostable, cross-platform repository that can govern packages and container images from intake through production, especially across multiple ecosystems. Its breadth, access controls and CI/CD integration are compelling; the main reason to look elsewhere is the annual per-server model and the paid licensing needed for security-heavy use and separate non-production environments.
