Overview

Crazy Egg brings heatmaps, session recordings, web and conversion analytics, A/B testing, surveys, popup calls to action, and error tracking into one website platform. That breadth is useful when a team wants to investigate a behavior problem and act on it without stitching together separate tools. Its focus is websites, so teams seeking app-platform coverage should compare alternatives.

Installation uses a snippet in the website head, with integrations for Drupal, Google Tag Manager, Joomla, Magento, Segment, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix, and WordPress. Conversion and survey notifications can go to email, Slack, an API endpoint, or Zapier; Google Analytics 4 provides traffic data for A/B tests. The API can create and update heatmaps and expose results in other applications. Unlimited domains and team members on every plan are a practical advantage for agencies and multi-site teams.

Key features

Heatmaps and session recordings

Click, Scroll, Confetti, Overlay, and List reports offer different views of page interaction, while recordings add visitor-level context. Mobile capture and rage-click detection help teams examine friction across devices and identify repeated clicks that may signal a problem. The recording allowance and retention vary by plan, so higher-volume teams need to match those quotas to their analysis needs.

Free heatmaps and analytics

Instant Heatmaps are free indefinitely, with no website or credit-card limit. They track up to 1,000 sessions per day and retain 30 days of data. The Free plan also includes Web Analytics, Conversion Analytics, and website Surveys, making it a credible starting point for small sites or early evaluation, but it is not a substitute for the much larger monthly tracking and recording quotas of paid tiers.

Privacy and support

Crazy Egg says it complies with GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA obligations, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and does not sell or track users across websites. Recordings mask email, password, numeric, and text fields, plus slider and dial controls, on the client before data reaches its servers; users can also mask fields and anonymize IP addresses. Data is hosted in the United States on Amazon Web Services with cross-data-center replication and regular backups. Recordings are retained for 24 months before automatic deletion. Agencies receive priority support from the marketing strategy team at no extra cost; customers can contact support by email.

Pricing

All paid plans are billed annually, include unlimited domains and team members, and have no overage charges. Reaching a monthly tracking limit pauses collection until the first of the next month. That makes costs predictable, but a quota reached mid-month creates a gap in data rather than an extra bill. Paid plans offer a 30-day free trial, require a credit card, and do not charge until the trial ends.

Plan	Price	Included usage	Best fit
Free	0.00 USD per free	Web Analytics, Instant Heatmaps, Conversion Analytics, and Surveys; heatmaps track up to 1,000 sessions per day with 30-day retention	Small sites and teams starting behavior analysis without a paid commitment
Starter	29.00 USD per month, billed annually	5,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 5 Heatmap Reports, 50 Recordings/mo, and 6 months of recording storage	Low-traffic websites that need paid recordings and reports at a modest quota
Plus	99.00 USD per month, billed annually	150,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 75 Heatmap Reports, 1,000 Recordings/mo, and 2 years of recording storage	Growing teams that need substantially more collection and longer recording retention
Pro	249.00 USD per month, billed annually	500,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 100 Heatmap Reports, 5,000 Recordings/mo, and 2 years of recording storage	High-volume sites with heavier reporting and recording needs
Enterprise	599.00 USD per month, billed annually	1,000,000 tracked pageviews/mo, 200 Heatmap Reports, 10,000 Recordings/mo, and 2 years of recording storage	Large sites requiring the highest published monthly quotas

Starter is the least expensive paid step, but its 5,000-pageview and 50-recording monthly ceilings can constrain active sites. Plus makes a large jump in both quotas and storage; Pro and Enterprise are for teams that need still greater volume. The benefit of unlimited seats and domains carries across tiers, but buyers should prioritize the collection ceiling: no plan charges overages, and none keeps tracking running once its limit is met.

Platforms

Crazy Egg is available on web and through an extension, and provides an API. Its installation integrations cover common site builders, commerce platforms, and tag management tools, which reduces setup friction for website teams already using those systems.

Who it's for

Crazy Egg suits entrepreneurs, small businesses, growth marketers, ecommerce companies, lead-generation businesses, education organizations, agencies, and UX/UI designers who want visual evidence of how website visitors behave. Unlimited team membership and domains strengthen the case for agencies and teams managing multiple sites. It is less suitable for buyers who need flexible month-to-month paid billing or uninterrupted collection above a fixed quota.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free heatmaps have no website limit or credit-card requirement, giving teams a low-friction way to inspect behavior.
Pros: Heatmaps, recordings, analytics, surveys, and testing sit together, helping teams move from diagnosis to optimization within one platform.
Pros: Unlimited team members and domains avoid seat- and domain-based cost increases, especially useful for agencies.
Pros: No overage charges make paid usage costs predictable.
Cons: Paid plans are annual, limiting flexibility for teams that want a short commitment.
Cons: Collection pauses at the monthly limit, which can leave a blind spot until the next month.
Cons: Starter's 5,000 tracked pageviews and 50 recordings per month may be too restrictive for sites with substantial traffic or frequent investigations.

Alternatives

Fullstory is worth comparing for teams looking at a free plan with 30,000 sessions, 10 user seats, and one-year replay retention.
LiveSession may suit smaller teams seeking a free tier capped at 1,000 sessions per month, two websites or projects, and three team members.
Matomo is an alternative for teams prioritizing a self-hosted option with a free Community plan offering unlimited users and hits.
Contentsquare offers a free plan with 10,000 monthly sessions and seven months of data access.
FullSession is another option with a free web plan capped at 1,000 sessions per month, two seats, one domain, and 30-day retention.
Heap may be a fit for teams comparing a free plan with 10,000 monthly sessions and six months of data history.
OpenReplay is an alternative to consider.
UXCam is an alternative to consider.

Verdict

Choose Crazy Egg if your team wants website heatmaps, recordings, and conversion tools together, especially when unlimited seats and domains matter. Its free heatmaps are a meaningful entry point and its no-overage policy keeps costs legible. Look elsewhere if annual billing is a poor fit or if reaching a monthly cap cannot be allowed to interrupt data collection.
