Overview

CurseForge is a catalog for finding and downloading Minecraft mods and modpacks. It suits players building or browsing Minecraft setups, especially those who need to narrow choices by loader and game version. The free catalog does the core job; Premium is for people who value ad-free access, direct downloads, or desktop customization.

Key features

The catalog spans more than 10,000 Minecraft projects and supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt. Game-version filters and project dependency information help players screen options before adding them to a setup, though they do not guarantee that a particular combination will work. Mod collections and download tracking offer useful organization for players managing more than a one-off download.

CurseForge also supports API access, built-in publishing, and server tools. Modpacks can be exported as a CurseForge .zip or shared by profile code, which makes the service useful for assembling and passing along a configuration as well as finding individual mods. These extras matter less to someone who only wants a single download.

Premium removes ads across CurseForge and its desktop client, enables direct downloads without waiting delays, and adds custom themes and layout customization in the desktop experience. Those are convenience improvements, not a paywall around the Minecraft mods: the catalog's mods are described as free.

CurseForge is part of the Overwolf family. It says authors receive 70% of subscription income, and reports more than $18 million paid to creators since 2020 and over $20 million overall. That gives Premium a stated creator-support dimension alongside its user-facing benefits.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free Minecraft mods and modpacks with web catalog access. It is the sensible choice for players comfortable with ads and download delays who do not need Premium desktop benefits.

Premium Monthly costs 2.99 USD per month, billed monthly at $2.99, and includes an ad-free experience, instant downloads, and Premium web and desktop access. It suits someone who wants those benefits without an annual commitment. Premium Annual is billed annually at $30.00 and includes the same stated benefits. The annual subscription is priced at 2.50 USD per year, billed annually at $30.00 (listed from $35.88), with a 16% saving; it suits subscribers confident they will keep using Premium. The monthly option costs more over a full year, while Free gives up the ad removal, direct downloads, and Premium access.

Subscribers can cancel at any time and retain access through the end of the billing cycle. After Premium ends, the account returns to free membership. Refunds are generally not offered, with exceptions considered individually, so cancellation does not remove the risk of paying for a period that no longer suits you. Tebex handles Premium subscription payments.

Platforms

The catalog is available on the web, and Premium access also covers the desktop client. CurseForge runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The web catalog is enough for browsing and downloading; the desktop route is relevant to players who want Premium's desktop customization.

Who it's for

CurseForge is a strong fit for Minecraft players who want a broad mod and modpack catalog, loader and version filters, dependency information, and options for organizing or sharing setups. Teams or communities distributing a shared modpack can make use of profile codes and export formats. It is less compelling for someone seeking only a particular resource pack or a different kind of Minecraft utility: the catalog here is focused on mods and modpacks.

Pros and cons

Pros: A catalog of more than 10,000 projects, with four supported loaders, version filters, and dependency information, makes discovery more targeted than browsing an undifferentiated list.
Pros: Collections, download tracking, profile-code sharing, and .zip exports support organizing and handing off modpack setups.
Pros: Free access covers the Minecraft mods and modpacks; Premium's benefits are convenience features rather than catalog access.
Cons: Premium's main user-facing gains are ad removal, faster downloads, and desktop customization, so it offers little reason to subscribe if those are not priorities.
Cons: Refunds are generally unavailable, making the monthly option the less committing way to judge whether Premium is worth keeping.

Alternatives

For a different Minecraft resource pack rather than a mod catalog, RealSource is a freemium option with a lifetime-access plan for HD versions and future updates; choose it when that pack-specific offer is the priority. Sapixcraft is another freemium resource-pack option, with a $3.99 / month (plus VAT) Casual Copper plan that includes early Java access and all Java downloads. Brixel has free access and a trial, with a Java, Bedrock, and Bedrock RTX 64x plan; it is better suited to readers comparing texture-pack formats and resolutions.

Faithful is a free, open-source resource pack project with textures and related-project code on GitHub, while PureBDcraft offers a freemium Minecraft Java resource-pack option. Chroma Hills is another freemium resource-pack alternative, and BetterVanillaBuilding is a free option. John Smith Legacy is a free resource pack with no payment required to download or use.

Readers comparing categories rather than individual packs can browse Minecraft Resource Packs, Minecraft Minimap Mods, Minecraft Mod Browsers, Minecraft Schematic Tools, Minecraft Modpack Builders, and Game Mod Repositories.

Verdict

Choose CurseForge if you want a free, substantial Minecraft mod and modpack catalog with practical compatibility clues and sharing tools. Premium can make regular browsing less interrupted and downloads more direct, but it is optional; the restrictive refund policy is a reason to prefer Free or try the monthly subscription before committing annually.
