Overview

darktable is a free, open-source application for organizing digital negatives and developing raw photographs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It suits photographers who want a configurable desktop workflow and control over their processing; its breadth comes with a learning curve, and some platform-specific caveats matter before adoption.

It keeps image edits non-destructive, leaving originals unchanged, and combines database-based organization with a zoomable lighttable for browsing. Imports cover standard, raw, and high dynamic range formats, including JPEG, CR2, NEF, HDR, PFM, and RAF. That mix makes darktable more than a raw converter, though teams looking for cloud-synced libraries should look elsewhere: cloud sync is not supported.

Key features

Development, color, and performance

Raw support, masking, and batch editing cover the core work of processing individual images and applying edits across a set. Automatic display-profile detection works on most systems, while built-in ICC profiles include sRGB, Adobe RGB, XYZ, and linear RGB. Many operations can use OpenCL GPU acceleration, which can help make demanding image work more practical on suitable systems.

Capture, export, and automation

Tethered shooting with live view is supported for some camera brands, rather than universally. Export destinations include disk storage, email attachments, Piwigo webalbums, and HTML-based galleries. Lua scripting lets users automate many parts of the workflow, an advantage for photographers with repeatable processes and the patience to configure them.

Optional AI tools

AI features are opt-in and disabled by default, with support for object masking, denoising, and upscaling. One packaging distinction is consequential: as of September 2026, the Flatpak release does not include these tools. Choose another Linux package if those capabilities are required.

Workflow caveats

darktable does not support DCP camera profiles, and presets from other programs are incompatible. Photographers who depend on either should account for rebuilding their profile or preset workflow before switching. Help is directed to the Pixls.us forum; GitHub Issues is the channel for bug reports and feature requests.

Pricing

darktable costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the application itself, an open-source photography workflow tool and raw developer licensed under GPL version 3 or later; there is no paid tier or free-trial period to weigh against it. That makes it a straightforward fit for individuals and teams seeking a no-cost desktop workflow, though the project’s learning curve and the time needed to adapt incompatible presets remain real costs of adoption.

Platforms

darktable supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Downloads include Windows installers and macOS disk images, while Linux and Unix users can choose among source, AppImage, package-manager, and Flatpak routes. The provided macOS bundles require macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later, which excludes older Macs from that distribution.

Windows users should also expect a possible installation prompt: the FAQ says Windows builds are not currently signed with a trusted code-signing certificate, which can trigger SmartScreen or Smart App Control warnings. Linux users who need AI tools should avoid the Flatpak release.

Who it's for

darktable is best suited to photographers who want a free, flexible raw-processing toolbox, non-destructive editing, batch work, and the option to script parts of their workflow. It is a stronger fit for users willing to learn its controls and build around its profile and preset limitations than for teams seeking a synced, low-friction shared library.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source, with non-destructive editing that preserves original images.
Pros: Combines digital-negative management, raw development, masking, batch editing, and multiple export routes in one workflow.
Pros: Lua scripting and OpenCL acceleration offer room to automate workflows and use GPU processing.
Cons: The project warns that the learning curve can be steep, so flexibility asks for a meaningful investment in learning.
Cons: No cloud sync, DCP camera-profile support, or compatibility with presets from other programs limits some migration and collaborative workflows.
Cons: AI tools are absent from the Flatpak release, and the provided macOS bundles require version 13.5 or later.

Alternatives

RawTherapee is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Choose it if you do not need digital asset management, printing, or uploading features.

Hasselblad Phocus is a free RAW-processing download for Mac and PC. Nikon NX Studio is a free desktop choice for macOS and Windows, with Nikon camera and file-format support varying. vkdt is a free, open-source photography workflow toolbox. Canon Digital Photo Professional is included in the initial software setup for Canon cameras and supports EOS digital cameras and PowerShot models with RAW capability.

Capture One is a paid alternative with a free trial and desktop RAW conversion, tethering, and advanced editing tools; its listed platform is iOS. ON1 Portrait AI is a paid alternative for macOS and Windows with a free trial. Darkroom offers a free starter tier and a yearly plan for macOS and iOS; its starter tier requires Darkroom+ to export.

Verdict

Choose darktable if you want a capable, free raw workflow that keeps originals intact and gives you room to manage, batch-edit, export, and script without a subscription. Look elsewhere if cloud sync, DCP profiles, cross-app presets, or a gentler learning curve are central to your workflow.
