Overview

Datawrapper brings charts, maps, and tables into one web-based publishing workflow. It offers 25 interactive, responsive, accessible visualization types, including more than 20 chart types, and supports both interactive publishing and downloads. The company was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Berlin.

For developers, the REST API can create and edit charts and support integrations such as CMS chart viewers and image exports. A PowerPoint add-in lets users create, edit, embed, and update visualizations inside presentations. These routes make Datawrapper more than a standalone chart editor, though its central strength remains publishing data visuals.

Key features

Charts, maps, and tables

The chart range gives teams options beyond a single standard chart format. Mapping covers symbol, choropleth, and locator maps, with more than 4,000 basemaps and cartograms. Tables can combine images, heatmaps, and miniature charts with search, pagination, and sorting. That breadth is useful when a project needs varied ways to present data; it does not make Datawrapper a general-purpose mapping platform.

Publishing and integrations

Visualizations can be embedded on websites or exported as PNG, PDF, or SVG depending on plan. The free plan includes PNG downloads and web publishing, while PDF and SVG require Pro or above. The API and PowerPoint add-in extend publishing into CMS and presentation workflows, helping teams reuse visuals rather than rebuild them for each channel.

Privacy and operations

Datawrapper says its embeds have no trackers, cookies, or third-party scripts and meet GDPR and CCPA requirements. It says the service is hosted in Frankfurt and Stockholm within the EEA, is ISO 27001 certified, and undergoes yearly audits and penetration tests. Its stated security practices include encryption at rest and in transit, TLS, daily backups, and peer-reviewed code. Support is available through contact form and email, with an Academy of more than 100 articles; paid plans list email support.

Pricing

Datawrapper uses a freemium model. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes charts, maps, and tables, web publishing and embedding, PNG downloads, and unlimited publishing. The tradeoff is visible attribution: free visualizations retain “Created with Datawrapper.” That is reasonable for personal or exploratory publishing, but a constraint for teams that need unbranded public-facing work.

Pro costs 21.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT. It removes attribution and adds PDF and SVG downloads plus 90-day edit history. This is the entry point for professional use where branding control or vector and document exports matter. Business costs 39.00 USD per month, billed per user/month excl. VAT, and adds waterfall and dual-axis charts, advanced team permissions, and a 1-year edit history to Pro. It better fits collaborative teams needing those chart types or longer revision history.

Enterprise has custom pricing. It offers custom agreements with uptime and support guarantees, self-hosting of published visualizations, and SAML single sign-on, making it the relevant tier for organizations with those operational or identity requirements. The per-user billing on Pro and Business means costs scale with seats; the free plan avoids that cost but retains attribution and lacks PDF and SVG export.

Platforms

Datawrapper is available on web and lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows alongside API and self-hosted platform options. The API provides a concrete integration path for developers, while the PowerPoint add-in serves presentation workflows. Enterprise adds self-hosting of published visualizations.

Who it's for

Datawrapper is a strong fit for newsrooms, communications teams, and analysts who need accessible charts, maps, and tables published to the web, especially when consistent embedding and presentation workflows matter. Teams integrating charts into a CMS can use the API, and those sharing data in slides can work through the PowerPoint add-in.

It is less suited to teams that require unbranded output but cannot budget for a paid plan, or to buyers whose primary need is a dedicated mapping environment. Business is most relevant when advanced team permissions, waterfall or dual-axis charts, or longer edit history are required; smaller teams may find Pro sufficient.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad set of chart, map, and table formats supports varied data presentations in one publishing tool.
Pros: API and PowerPoint workflows make it useful beyond direct web publishing.
Pros: The free plan allows unlimited publishing, and embeds are described as tracker-, cookie-, and third-party-script-free.
Cons: Free publishing carries Datawrapper attribution, while removing it requires a paid plan.
Cons: PDF and SVG exports are reserved for paid plans, limiting free users to PNG downloads.
Cons: Pro and Business are priced per user/month, so team costs rise with seats.

Alternatives

For a focused map-building workflow, Mapotic has a free forever Map Builder plan limited to 100 places, with custom fields, data layers, filters, ratings, and comments; choose it when those map-specific capabilities matter more than Datawrapper’s chart-and-table range. everviz is another freemium option with a free plan that shows attribution and a Team plan at 599.00 USD per month; consider it when evaluating a separate visualization platform and its paid team tier.

Felt offers a free forever Personal plan with unlimited maps and sharing, but no own data file uploads and personal-use-only terms, so it fits personal map sharing rather than team data publishing. Flourish provides unlimited projects and stories, its full template range, and public publishing with attribution on its free plan; it is worth considering for story-oriented publishing needs.

Mapbox Studio has a free plan for Mapbox users, though related API and custom tileset usage may be billed separately; consider it when the Mapbox ecosystem is the priority. Mapline is another mapping option with a free Mapping Starter plan. MapTiler Cloud has a free plan for testing, personal, or non-commercial use with 5 GB storage, 5k sessions/month, 100k API requests/month, and 100 uploads/month. NextGIS Web offers a Mini plan at 180.00 EUR per year, billed annually, with one user, 10 GiB storage, unlimited layers, one tracker, and one collector; it may suit teams seeking a web GIS service with those stated allowances.

Verdict

Choose Datawrapper if your team needs to turn data into web-ready charts, maps, and tables, with API and presentation workflows to carry those visuals into existing channels. Its broad visualization range and unlimited free publishing make it approachable, but attribution is unavoidable on the free tier and per-user paid pricing matters for larger teams. Look elsewhere if unbranded output must be free or if mapping, rather than mixed-format data publishing, is the core requirement.
