Overview

DaVinci Resolve is a desktop post-production suite for editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and still-photo work. It suits creators and teams that want those stages in one workflow, particularly when projects move across shared storage or collaborators.

Its breadth is the draw: a capable free edition covers Ultra HD and 60 fps, while Studio extends the limits and adds specialist tools. The trade-off is that Resolve is a substantial all-in-one system, not a focused choice for teams needing only one narrow production task.

Key features

One post-production workflow

Resolve combines video editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post and photo editing; version 21 adds a Photo page for stills. Node-based compositing, keying, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracking and simulation tools support effects work, with GPU rendering. AI tools cover facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing and Speed Warp retiming. This range can keep several production stages together, while third-party Open FX, audio plugins, titles and motion-graphics templates provide room to extend the workflow.

Audio, storage and collaboration

Fairlight supports up to 2,000 tracks with real-time effects, EQ and dynamics processing, as well as surround mixing and live audio input. That capacity is relevant to complex audio sessions, though teams focused on mixing alone may prefer a dedicated audio tool. Resolve works with direct-attached drives, NAS and SAN systems, and supports major file formats plus transfers involving Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for access from anywhere, making it a fit for distributed collaboration. Studio adds Python and LUA scripting and developer APIs for teams extending or automating their workflow.

Pricing

DaVinci Resolve Free is available at no charge and supports editing and finishing up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60 fps. It is a meaningful starting point for creators whose output fits those limits. Those ceilings make it a poor fit for work requiring higher resolution or frame rates.

DaVinci Resolve Studio costs 295.00 USD once. It raises support to 32K and 120 fps and adds temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, more than 45 additional GPU- and CPU-accelerated Resolve FX, scripting and developer APIs. Studio is the choice for work needing those limits or tools; the one-time purchase is a different commitment from a recurring subscription. No seat or quota terms are given.

Platforms

Resolve is available as a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, and a mobile app is also indicated. Its storage support spans direct-attached drives, NAS and SAN, which lets teams consider it alongside existing storage infrastructure. Resolve supports 4K export; the free edition's stated ceiling is Ultra HD 3840 x 2160.

Who it's for

Resolve is strongest for editors, post-production teams and creators who benefit from bringing picture, effects, audio and photo work into one application. Cloud project access, shared-storage compatibility and interoperability with established editing tools also suit teams coordinating across locations or workflows. A specialist app is a better fit when the need is limited to one function, or when the free edition's resolution and frame-rate caps do not meet delivery requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: Editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work sit in one workflow, reducing the need to split those stages across separate tools.
Pros: The free edition supports Ultra HD and 60 fps, a substantial range for work that stays within those limits.
Pros: NAS and SAN support, Blackmagic Cloud access and project transfers involving major editors give teams several ways to fit Resolve into existing workflows.
Cons: Free users are capped at Ultra HD and 60 fps; higher-resolution or faster-frame-rate projects require Studio.
Cons: Resolve's wide post-production scope may be more application than a team needs for a single-purpose audio or video task.

Alternatives

For focused mixing or DJ work rather than a full post-production workflow, consider Serato DJ Pro, djay, Elgato Wave Link, MixPad, Mixxx, rekordbox, RØDE UNIFY or VirtualDJ.

Mixxx is a free DJ application for Linux, macOS and Windows, while Elgato Wave Link and RØDE UNIFY are free options for audio or streaming workflows on macOS and Windows. Serato DJ Pro, djay, MixPad, rekordbox and VirtualDJ each offer free access alongside paid plans or editions, with platform availability varying across desktop and mobile. Choose among them when the relevant DJ, mixing or streaming workflow matters more than Resolve's broad editing and finishing toolkit.

Browse Video Editing Software for editing-focused choices, Visual Effects Software for effects work, and Audio Mixing Software for audio-first tools. 360 Video Software, Disk Benchmark Software and PC Benchmark Software cover adjacent needs.

Verdict

Choose DaVinci Resolve if you want one capable environment for multiple post-production stages, with a free edition that reaches Ultra HD and Studio available as a one-time purchase for 32K, 120 fps and additional tools. Look elsewhere if you need a narrower specialist workflow or cannot work within the free edition's resolution and frame-rate limits.
