Overview

Day One is a multimedia journaling app for people who want to keep personal writing, images, audio, and other records in one place. It suits individuals and small groups who value privacy and prompts for building a writing routine. Its free plan is constrained to one device and one photo per entry; paid plans make more sense for users who need synced access or richer entries.

Entries can combine text, photos, video, audio, drawings, and documents, with search and filters for finding past writing. Passcodes, biometric security, end-to-end encryption, and automatic backups support privacy and continuity. Shared Journals also give families, friends, and small groups a way to journal together privately. Day One is part of Automattic and has been made since 2011.

Key features

Flexible entries: Multimedia support makes Day One useful for preserving more than written reflections. Basic's one-photo cap can feel restrictive for visual journaling; Silver and Gold raise the allowance to 30 photos or videos per entry.
Habit support: Daily prompts, a prompt library or gallery, templates, reminders, and streaks offer several ways to overcome the blank page. These tools suit users seeking structure, though they are not a substitute for a writing workflow built around a different practice.
Privacy and recovery: Passcodes and biometric security add access controls, while end-to-end encryption and automatic backups address privacy and data continuity. Users can export data anytime; PDF and CSV/JSON exports are included on paid plans.
Integrations: Silver and Gold include Strava, Zapier, and IFTTT integrations, which are more useful to people connecting journaling to other services than to users who want a standalone diary.
Offline use and organization: Offline access and search and filters support writing away from a connection and later finding entries.

Pricing

Day One uses a freemium model. Basic is free and includes basic journaling, one-device access, and one photo per entry. It is a sensible starting point for a single-device text journal, but the device restriction and photo cap are meaningful limits for people who move between platforms or document events with images.

Silver costs 49.99 USD per year, billed annually. It expands media capacity to 30 attachments per entry, supports unlimited devices, and includes sync and Strava, Zapier, and IFTTT integrations. It is the practical tier for users who need a multi-device journal or richer entries.

Gold costs 74.99 USD per year, billed annually, and includes unlimited devices plus advanced reflection and AI features. Choose it if those additions justify the higher annual cost; Silver is the more direct fit when the priority is expanded media, sync, or integrations.

A free one-month trial is available in the app, subject to App Store eligibility. Cancel before a paid trial ends to avoid a charge. Subscription upgrades and billing changes must be handled on the platform where the subscription began, a constraint worth considering if you manage subscriptions across devices.

Platforms

Day One is available on iPhone, Android, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Windows, browsers, and browser extensions. That breadth is valuable for a journal intended to follow its owner across devices, though Basic's one-device limit means the free tier does not provide that same flexibility.

Who it's for

Day One is a strong fit for people who want private, multimedia journaling with reminders and prompts, especially if they will use it across multiple devices or share a journal with a small group. It is less compelling for someone who needs multi-device access at no cost or whose preferred journaling method does not benefit from media, prompts, or integrations.

Pros and cons

Pro: Entries accept text, photos, video, audio, drawings, and documents, supporting a broader record than text alone.
Pro: End-to-end encryption, passcodes, biometric protection, and automatic backups address privacy and resilience together.
Pro: Broad platform availability and unlimited-device access on paid plans suit users who journal across devices.
Con: Basic is limited to one device and one photo per entry, which narrows its usefulness for multi-device or image-heavy journaling.
Con: Unlimited devices and expanded media require a recurring paid subscription, and billing changes must be made on the subscription's original platform.

Alternatives

Consider Journey if Linux support matters or if its annual Membership plan's stated 10GB cloud storage, 5,000-entry quota, and 20 photo/video allowance better match your needs. Penzu is another freemium option for readers comparing journal apps. Stoic is a freemium alternative with a free trial. Apple Journal is a free choice for users looking within Apple's iOS and macOS platforms. Clearful offers a free plan with unlimited entries, while its Pro plan adds photos and unlimited devices. Daybook offers a free plan with unlimited entries and sync across multiple devices. Diarium supports Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, with its Pro plan described as adding cloud sync and unlimited attachments per entry. Diarly is another freemium journaling option.

Verdict

Choose Day One if you want a private, multimedia journal with habit-building tools, broad platform coverage, and the option to share journals. Its strongest case is the combination of entry formats, security, and prompts; its main drawback is that the free plan's single-device and one-photo limits push users who need flexibility toward annual subscriptions. If those limits or the paid tiers do not fit, a free alternative or one with different platform coverage may be a better match.
