Overview

Daytona is a runtime for executing AI-generated code and agent workflows in isolated sandboxes. It suits teams building coding agents, evaluators, or code-interpreter features that need API-driven execution and explicit network controls. Its integration and security features are compelling, but usage-based costs and tier-gated VPN access call for planning.

Key features

Daytona states that it creates sandboxes in under 90 milliseconds, a useful target for interactive agent workflows. It supports process execution, filesystem operations, Git integration, and built-in LSP through its APIs. SDK examples cover Python, TypeScript, Ruby, Go, and Java; the CLI supports macOS, Linux, and Windows. The MCP server documentation names Claude, Cursor, and Windsurf. This breadth can fit varied developer stacks, though teams should weigh it against the interfaces their workflows actually use.

Daytona identifies AI evaluations, code interpreters, coding agents, and data analysis as use cases. Isolated runtimes are intended to contain AI-generated code. Network controls include IPv4 CIDR and domain allow lists, blocking all outbound traffic, and chained outbound proxies. Organization-scoped secrets are encrypted at rest; sandboxes receive opaque placeholders, with plaintext substituted only for allowed HTTPS hosts. These controls give teams options for constraining execution, while VPN connectivity through Tailscale, OpenVPN, or Netbird requires Tier 3 or higher.

Workspaces support Dockerfiles, multiple VCS hosts, prebuilds, persistent storage, GPU workspaces, JetBrains, and self-hosting. The Trust Center lists GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and ISO/IEC 27001 compliance materials. Support may be provided through email, Slack, in-app chat, video support, or community forums.

Pricing

Daytona uses a freemium model with free-plan and free-trial options. The Start-ups plan is 0.00 USD per free, billed in credits, with up to $50k in credits for free. It may suit startups able to use credits, but the allowance is credits rather than a stated unlimited runtime entitlement.

The Pay-as-you-go plan has no listed plan price and bills usage by the second. Rates are vCPU $0.0504/h, memory $0.0162/h, storage $0.000108/h, and Windows $0.0858/vCPU/h. The first 5 GiB of storage is free, and $200 in free compute is included; GPU rates vary by model and preemptible or on-demand use. This model fits teams whose workloads vary, but costs depend on runtime and resource consumption. A separate Pay-as-you-go entry gives 5 GiB of storage free before storage charges.

Enterprise has custom pricing, larger limits, SSO, audit logs, and BYOC, making it the fit for organizations needing those capabilities. Daytona was founded in 2023 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

Platforms

Daytona supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. The CLI's macOS, Linux, and Windows support gives teams a desktop command-line path, while self-hosting is an option for deployments that need it.

Who it's for

Daytona is strongest for teams integrating code execution into AI products or agent workflows that need programmable sandboxes, multiple SDK options, and controls over outbound network access and secrets. It is less suited to buyers seeking a simple fixed monthly price or VPN connectivity below Tier 3.

Pros and cons

Pro: Execution APIs, SDK examples in five languages, and MCP support for Claude, Cursor, and Windsurf offer several integration paths.
Pro: Network rules and scoped secret handling provide concrete controls for sandbox workloads.
Pro: Persistent storage, prebuilds, GPU workspaces, and self-hosting support a range of workspace configurations.
Con: Pay-as-you-go charges vary by resource and accrue by the second, so teams must account for workload consumption.
Con: VPN connectivity requires Tier 3 or higher, which can rule it out for teams on lower tiers.

Alternatives

For a different cloud development environment, consider Cloud Development Environments; for sandbox tools, see Sandbox Software; and for browser-based experimentation, see Coding Playgrounds.

GitHub Codespaces is worth considering if its freemium model and listed 2-core and 4-core compute plans better match your workspace needs. Coder is a fit to compare for teams looking for free self-hosted workspaces, up to five active Coder Agents, and one platform integration on its Community plan. Kloudlite is an alternative for teams prioritizing open-source controllers, CRDs, CLI, and workspace images under the MIT license.

StackBlitz is an alternative for teams whose needs center on public or private projects and file uploads. DevZero may fit teams looking for unlimited clusters and 30-day data retention on a free plan, or a monthly Pro plan. Okteto offers a free Starter plan for five seats, with paid Scale and Enterprise plans at custom pricing.

Bunnyshell is an alternative for teams considering environment-minute billing and sandbox AI environments. Google Cloud Workstations is another option for teams comparing metered workstation management fees.

Verdict

Choose Daytona if you are building agent or AI-code workflows that need isolated execution, API control, and specific network and secret safeguards. Its strongest case is the combination of execution interfaces and configurable containment; look elsewhere if predictable fixed pricing or VPN access below Tier 3 is essential.
