Overview

OpenBOM links product data across CAD, BOM, product lifecycle, engineering change, procurement and ERP workflows. Its digital xBOM can represent engineering, manufacturing and software bills of materials in single-level, multi-level or flattened structures. That scope is useful when teams need related product records to follow a design toward production, but may be more than a team needs for a basic parts list.

Key features

CAD and product records

Cloud PDM centralizes CAD files and supports locking, versions, revisions and releases, alongside SmartSync and automatic BOM extraction. This makes OpenBOM relevant to teams managing evolving design files as well as their resulting BOMs. CAD add-ins, however, are not included automatically: they require a Team or Company subscription and a separate license for each user and CAD system needing integration.

BOMs and collaboration

Multiple engineers can work on the same data in real time, with comments, tasks and mentions attached to items. Revision control, BOM comparison and change workflows help keep product changes connected to the BOM; xBOM views are useful when engineering and manufacturing need different representations of shared product data.

Procurement and integrations

Inventory, RFQs, purchase orders and supplier and contractor collaboration extend the workspace beyond engineering records. Listed CAD integrations include SOLIDWORKS, Altium Designer, Onshape, Autodesk Fusion, PTC Creo, Siemens NX and Autodesk Inventor. QuickBooks, NetSuite and SAP are named as ERP integration examples. REST API access has no call limits, with cost reflected through data records, so teams with large catalogs should assess record usage as well as user seats.

Security and support

OpenBOM says communications between its servers, browsers and client applications are encrypted, and describes granular sharing permissions. It states that it has achieved SOC 2 Type II compliance. Support is available through tools embedded in the product and 24/7 online support.

Pricing

OpenBOM has a free plan, paid plans from $30/user/mo billed annually, and a 14-day trial. The pricing structure separates user seats from data-record capacity, while CAD integration adds another per-seat, per-system charge.

Plan	Price and terms	What it includes
Data records (up to 2,000)	0.00 USD per free	Up to 2,000 records; records count unique part numbers, BOM part records and managed CAD/PDM files.
Professional Team (yearly)	30.00 USD per year; $30 / seat / month, billed yearly	BOM management, part catalog, inventory control, RFQ / purchase orders and REST API; unlimited free read-only users.
Professional Team (monthly)	55.00 USD per month	Team features, per seat, with unlimited free read-only users.
Company (yearly)	90.00 USD per year; $90 / seat / month, billed yearly	Includes Team, plus CAD file management (PDM), revision control, change management (ECO), advanced BOM (xBOM) and MFA.
Company (monthly)	165.00 USD per month	Company features, per seat.
CAD add-in	45.00 USD per month; $25 / seat / month / CAD system billed annually	Per seat per CAD system; requires Team or Company subscription.
Data records (up to 5,000)	180.00 USD per month; yearly rate $100 per month	Up to 5,000 data records.
Data records (up to 10,000)	360.00 USD per month; yearly rate $200 per month	Up to 10,000 data records.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Includes Company, SSO, custom integrations, enterprise support, and private and custom hosting.
ERP integrations	Custom pricing	Custom flat rate per integration, quoted by sales.

The free record tier can suit evaluation or small catalogs, and read-only users remain free; only people editing or managing data need paid seats. Qualified educational, personal and non-commercial users may access free plans. Team is the lower-cost paid route for BOM and procurement workflows, but it does not include Company’s PDM, revision control, ECO, advanced xBOM or MFA. Monthly seat pricing is higher than yearly pricing. CAD add-ins compound the subscription cost, and growing record counts can add a substantial separate charge. Enterprise and ERP integration pricing is custom.

Platforms

OpenBOM is cloud-deployed and lists web, Windows, macOS, Linux and API platforms. Its cloud model suits distributed access, while teams requiring private or custom hosting need the Enterprise plan.

Who it's for

OpenBOM is best suited to engineering and manufacturing teams that need product data to connect CAD files, BOM structures, change tracking and purchasing. It also fits teams collaborating across suppliers or contractors and organizations with existing CAD tools among its listed integrations. A team that only needs a lightweight BOM, or that cannot budget for paid editing seats and record growth, should weigh simpler or self-hosted options.

Pros and cons

Pros

One workspace spans design and purchasing: CAD/PDM, multiple BOM views, inventory, RFQs and purchase orders address linked engineering and procurement work.
Read-only access does not consume paid seats: unlimited read-only users can widen visibility while paid seats are reserved for editing and management.
Broad CAD coverage and an uncapped API call policy: listed integrations cover several major CAD systems, and API cost is tied to records rather than call limits.
Security controls include SOC 2 Type II compliance: encrypted communications and granular sharing permissions support controlled collaboration.

Cons

CAD integration adds a separate charge: each user and CAD system needs a license, and an active Team or Company subscription is also required.
Record capacity can become a material cost: the free tier caps at 2,000 records, while paid record tiers are priced separately from seats.
The lower-cost Team plan omits key PDM capabilities: teams needing CAD file management, revisions, ECO and advanced xBOM must move to Company.
Monthly seats cost more than annual seats: teams avoiding annual billing pay a higher listed rate.

Alternatives

Compare bill of materials software if you want to survey the category before selecting a product.

BOMIST is worth considering for a small, single-user setup: its free plan allows 100 parts and three products, with API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted and Windows platform support.
Carbon is the alternative to consider when open-source ERP, MRP, MES and QMS are priorities; its Community edition is AGPL-3.0, while Enterprise features require a commercial agreement.
Cascadia PLM is an option for teams prioritizing self-hosted, open-source PLM, with a free core plan offering unlimited editors and viewers under AGPL-3.0.
TurboPLM offers a free plan for one member and up to 100 parts, and a self-hosted option for teams that prefer software running on their own hardware.
Dokuly is a free, open-source PLM option delivered as a self-hosted Docker stack.
Epicor Kinetic is an alternative for buyers evaluating an ERP platform with cloud packages and concurrent user licensing.
Nora IPLM is another paid product lifecycle management option with a free trial.
Acumatica Field Service is a paid field service option with custom pricing based on applications, usage, resources and deployment preferences.

Verdict

Choose OpenBOM if engineering and manufacturing teams need CAD-linked product data, flexible BOM structures and procurement workflows in a shared cloud workspace. Its strongest advantage is connecting those stages without isolating the BOM from design and purchasing. Look elsewhere if your team needs only a small parts list, requires self-hosting without Enterprise, or cannot justify the combined cost of editing seats, record capacity and CAD add-ins.
