Overview

MAME documents and reproduces the components of systems spanning the last five decades, with support for more than 32,000 individual systems. That scope makes it a strong option for exploring software history across several hardware categories in one framework. It is not a promise of uniform compatibility: some supported systems may not run perfectly, and some may fall short of full speed even on the fastest computers.

Session tools include saving and loading states, recording inputs for playback, and capturing screenshots or video. These are useful for revisiting a point in a program, reproducing an interaction, or documenting behavior. MAME generally does not include BIOS dumps or software, since many are copyrighted, although the project can redistribute some older software with permission. Users should expect to source much of what they want to run themselves.

Key features

Debugging and scripting

The interactive low-level debugger supports diagnosing emulation problems, developing software for vintage systems, creating cheats, ROM hacking, and investigating how programs behave. This makes MAME more useful than a play-only emulator for developers and preservation work, but it also gives the framework a distinctly technical character.

Lua scripts can inspect and change device state, access CPU registers, read and write memory, and draw graphical overlays. The API is not declared stable and can change without notice, so teams building scripts should be prepared to revise them as MAME evolves.

Plugins and connectivity

Plugins can communicate with external programs, display game structures, offer alternate interfaces, or test emulation. Included examples are Discord Presence and a GDB Stub, providing practical integration points without making MAME a general-purpose secure service: the project says it is not designed or audited for secure sites and advises against running it as administrator or root.

Network play is supported for linked-play deathmatch mode in Taito's Gunbuster, as noted in the 0.288 release notes. That is a specific supported use, not a basis for assuming network play across the full range of emulated systems.

Pricing

MAME is free: the MAME plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is distributed under GPL-2.0 or later. More than 90% of project files, including core files, are under BSD-3-Clause. There is no free trial because the software is already free, and no paid tier or seat-based price is given. The practical cost is in obtaining compatible BIOS and software files, which are generally not bundled.

Platforms

MAME supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Official Windows x64 and Arm64 binaries require Windows 10 or later and at least 4 GB of RAM; the supported processor must be x86-64 or Arm. The MAMEDEV wiki provides build instructions for Linux and macOS. The official release page offers the 0.289 release, with Windows binaries and source packages.

Who it's for

MAME is a good fit for people preserving or studying arcade and vintage-system software, developers targeting old hardware, and users who value one framework spanning many system types. Its debugger, scripting, and plugin support make it particularly relevant when inspection or experimentation matters as much as running software.

It is a weaker fit for anyone expecting a ready-to-play library, guaranteed full-speed operation, or a stable scripting interface. MAME is also not appropriate to run with administrator or root privileges or to deploy in a secure-site role.

Pros and cons

Pro: Coverage of more than 32,000 systems across arcades, computers, consoles, calculators, and other electronic amusement machines supports broad historical exploration.
Pro: The debugger, Lua access to machine state, and plugin system serve investigation and development beyond ordinary gameplay.
Pro: State files, input recording, and image or video capture help users reproduce and document behavior.
Con: BIOS and software are generally not included, so users must source many of the files needed to run systems.
Con: Emulation fidelity and speed vary; support does not ensure that a system works perfectly or at full speed.
Con: The Lua API may change without notice, creating maintenance risk for scripts.

Alternatives

For a focused Dreamcast choice, consider Flycast, which is free on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows and does not include game files. Flycast is another free option for Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave emulation. The WashingtonDC alternative is free, open source under GPL version 3, and available on Linux and Windows. Deecy is a free Linux and Windows alternative. Flycast is also free, open source, and supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Nitrocast is a free Linux alternative. Choose Redream if its freemium model and one-time Premium payment are a better fit: Premium starts at 6.00 USD per once, with listed pay-what-you-want amounts of $6, $8, $10, and $20. nullDC 2.0.0 is a free alternative for web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

For comparisons across systems or particular console families, browse the Multi-System Emulators, Dreamcast Emulators, Sega CD Emulators, TurboGrafx-16 Emulators, Game Gear Emulators, and Sega Genesis Emulators lists.

Verdict

Choose MAME if your priority is preserving, exploring, or developing for a broad range of historical systems, especially when its debugger and extensibility matter. Look elsewhere if you need a narrow, ready-to-use gaming setup or reliable full-speed emulation across every supported system.
