Overview

Devin is an autonomous coding agent for teams that want software work to move from planning through testing toward a merge-ready pull request. It suits builders who need both local development tools and cloud execution, especially when work can be split across agents. Its breadth is compelling, but daily and weekly allowances—and paid extra usage—make the plan terms part of the buying decision.

Key features

Devin plans, writes, tests, and ships production code, and can work in its own browser until a pull request is ready to merge. That makes it a broader workflow tool than code completion or chat alone; teams seeking only inline assistance may not need its agent-led approach.

Its workflows span migrations, refactors, documentation, scheduled chores, issue triage, bug fixes, testing, and performance optimization. Integrations and workflows involving GitHub, Linear, Slack, Teams, Datadog, Sentry, Jira, Confluence, AWS, Google Drive, and PostgreSQL connect that work to common engineering systems.

Devin can run in the cloud or on the user's machine. Parallel cloud agents can take on large work and report back while the laptop is closed, useful for teams with separable tasks. Devin CLI works locally, supports model switching, and can hand work to Devin Cloud. The Desktop IDE combines syntax highlighting, autocomplete, debugging, agent fleet management, and shared context. Codebase indexing, terminal access, code completion, chat assistance, and agent mode round out the coding toolkit.

Security Swarm reports finding 36 of 50 real-world GHSA vulnerabilities, with 72% recall and 30% lower cost per finding than the next most accurate alternative. That is a specific security result, not a substitute for evaluating how the product fits a team's own review process.

Pricing

Devin offers a limited free plan and paid tiers. Free costs 0.00 USD per free, billed monthly, for 1 member with limited usage. It is a way to start, but the usage cap makes it a poor basis for sustained team workloads.

Pro costs 20.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for 1 member. It is the entry paid option for an individual; the single-member allowance does not make it a team plan. Max costs 200.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for 1 member, positioning it as a substantially higher-cost individual tier. Paid-plan allowances refresh daily and weekly, and extra usage can be purchased at API pricing after included usage is exceeded. Teams should account for that variable spend, not just the seat price.

Teams costs $80/month minimum and $40/month per full seat, with up to 200 members; flex seats are free. That structure suits teams that need shared access, though the minimum applies even below the level implied by per-seat pricing. Enterprise has custom pricing, billed in Agent Compute Units at a rate set in the order form.

Platforms

Devin supports web, API, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Devin CLI runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows; the supported IDEs are Devin Desktop IDE, Zed, JetBrains, and Xcode. This mix accommodates both cloud-based work and developers who prefer local terminal or IDE workflows.

Who it's for

Devin is best suited to individual developers and engineering teams willing to delegate bounded coding tasks across an agent workflow, and to organizations that want cloud parallelism alongside local tools. Enterprise buyers may value controlled-environment data storage, virtual private cloud deployment, audit logs, fine-grained access controls, and custom identity-provider integration. Teams that mainly want a lightweight completion assistant, or cannot tolerate usage that can extend beyond included allowances, should consider a narrower or more predictable fit.

Pros and cons

Broad task coverage: migrations, bug fixing, testing, and routine chores all fit the agent workflow, rather than limiting Devin to suggestions in an editor.
Flexible execution: local CLI and IDE options pair with cloud runs and parallel agents, useful when work should continue away from a developer's machine.
Enterprise controls: Enterprise includes VPC deployment, controlled-environment data storage, audit logs, and fine-grained access controls.
Usage can add cost: paid allowances refresh daily and weekly, while excess usage is charged at API pricing.
Individual tiers remain single-seat: Pro and Max each cover 1 member, so teams need the Teams structure or Enterprise.

Alternatives

Kilo Code is a freemium alternative with a free trial and extensions for VS Code and JetBrains plus CLI; consider it when those extension and CLI surfaces are the priority.

Tabby offers a free Community plan for up to 5 users with local deployment, completion, an Answer Engine, in-line chat, and a Context Provider; choose it when local deployment and a small free team matter more than Devin's cloud-agent workflow.

Amp has a free Hobby plan and a $20/mo. Megawatt plan with 45,000 minutes of orb time; consider it when that plan's stated compute allowance is a better fit.

CodeGPT is freemium, offers a free trial, and supports a free tier with 10 daily Economy interactions, premium welcome credit, and BYOK; it may suit developers who want those free-tier terms.

Snowflake CoCo is a paid alternative with a free trial.

GitHub Copilot has a free plan and free trial, and supports a wide range of platforms including mobile; consider it when that platform breadth is the deciding factor.

Claude Code is a paid alternative with a free plan for Claude, though Claude Code is not included in that plan.

Gemini CLI is a freemium command-line option for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with free access through Google Account authentication.

Verdict

Devin is a strong choice for developers and teams that want an agent to handle substantial engineering tasks across local tools and cloud execution, with parallel work and enterprise controls available. Its main drawback is cost predictability: included usage is bounded, excess is billed at API pricing, and team access starts at a minimum. Choose it when that workflow breadth is worth managing; look elsewhere when a single-seat helper or a tightly fixed usage budget matters more.
