Overview

PONS Dictionary is a multilingual reference and translation service, with web, mobile and API access for lookups and integrations. It best suits language learners and product teams that need dictionary content across 36 languages; it is less suited to translating full sentences or longer text.

Its combination of editorial dictionary material, pronunciation and offline app access makes it a practical reference layer. The API’s monthly free quota offers a way to start integrating it, though its narrower language coverage and sentence-search limit matter when choosing it for a product.

Key features

Lookups and language content

PONS Translate gives access to 44 dictionaries in 36 languages. Searches cover individual words, common combinations and phrases, but not complete sentences or texts. That boundary makes PONS more useful for terminology, vocabulary and short expressions than as a general-purpose text translator.

Entries can include grammatical, stylistic and contextual guidance, and the site provides verb tables for many languages. Users can play word pronunciations, with regional variants for some languages. PONS says native-speaker editors regularly update many of its online dictionaries, adding words and reviewing translations and lexicographical information.

Apps and integrations

The PONS Translate app can download dictionaries for offline reference, useful when connectivity is limited. Ad-free use and dictionary downloads are offered through in-app purchases. Users can also add dictionary words to a selected PONS Vocabulary Trainer lesson, connecting lookup to vocabulary practice.

The API supports website and app integrations. It covers over 12 million headwords and phrases across 13 languages and more than 34 language combinations, with 1,000 reference queries per month free. That quota gives teams room to evaluate or support modest usage; products with higher lookup demand should assess whether the API fits their expected volume.

Privacy and support

PONS’s terms say text submitted for machine translation, along with the machine-generated translation, is temporarily stored to improve product quality. Teams handling sensitive text should weigh that practice before routing submissions through the service. Technical support is available at software-support@pons.de; other inquiries go to kundenservice@pons.de.

Pricing

PONS uses a freemium model, with free web access and a free-to-download app. The online dictionary is ad-supported; its paid PONS Pur subscription removes ads and video banners, except for PONS products. The subscription uses custom pricing.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
PONS Online Dictionary	Free	Online use with ads	Readers who want free browser-based lookups and can accept advertising.
PONS Translate app	Free	Free to download; in-app purchases for dictionaries and ad-free use	Mobile users who want dictionary access and offline downloads, with optional purchases.
PONS Pur	Custom pricing	Paid subscription removes ads and video banners, except for PONS products	Users who want a less ad-heavy online experience.

The API includes 1,000 free reference queries per month. That is a useful starting allowance, but it is a defined monthly quota rather than unlimited free integration. Offline dictionary access and ad-free app use may require in-app purchases.

Platforms

PONS is available on the web and on Android and iOS, and offers an API for app and website integration. The apps add downloadable offline dictionaries; the web dictionary remains ad-supported on its free plan.

Who it's for

PONS is a good fit for learners and multilingual users who need word-level definitions, usage context, verb forms and pronunciation, including offline access on mobile. It also suits teams embedding dictionary lookups into a site or app when its language coverage and monthly free API quota match their needs.

Choose another approach if the core requirement is translating complete sentences or documents: PONS does not support those searches. Teams processing sensitive machine-translation submissions should also consider the temporary storage described in PONS’s terms.

Pros and cons

Pros: 44 dictionaries across 36 languages provide broad reference coverage for personal lookups.
Pros: Grammatical, stylistic and contextual information, verb tables and audio pronunciation give learners more than a bare translation.
Pros: Downloadable dictionaries support offline app use, while the API’s 1,000 monthly free reference queries lower the barrier to integration.
Cons: Search stops at phrases and common combinations, so PONS does not fill a full-sentence or document-translation role.
Cons: The free online dictionary carries ads, and app dictionary downloads or ad-free use may require in-app purchases.
Cons: Machine-translation submissions and their generated translations are temporarily stored, a material concern for sensitive text.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Online Dictionaries. Merriam-Webster Dictionary is another freemium option across web, mobile and API, with an ad-supported app and offline dictionary and thesaurus access.

Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries is worth considering for its free online access to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s and Oxford Advanced American dictionaries, plus a Text Checker and word lists. The Free Dictionary may suit readers seeking a wider mix of free reference content, including dictionaries, a thesaurus, encyclopedias and translation.

Cambridge Dictionary offers free online dictionaries and +Plus word lists and quizzes. Shabdkosh is another freemium dictionary option.

ABBYY Lingvo is an alternative with Android, iOS, macOS and Windows apps. Linguee is free for private and business use on web and mobile. Pleco Chinese Dictionary is an Android and iOS option whose free version includes basic search, handwriting and dictionaries, with limited reader, audio and flashcard features.

Verdict

Choose PONS if you need multilingual dictionary lookups with useful learning context, pronunciation and offline mobile access, or a modest API entry point for dictionary integrations. Look elsewhere if full-sentence translation is essential, or if temporary storage of machine-translation submissions conflicts with your data requirements.
