Overview

Discord is a hosted communications platform built around persistent community spaces, with text chat alongside voice and video. It is strongest for gaming groups and other communities that benefit from shared servers, while teams seeking a work-first collaboration tool may prefer a business-focused alternative.

Its free plan covers the core communication experience, and Nitro adds higher-capacity or personalization features. The central trade-off is security: Discord says calls are end-to-end encrypted, but messages are not encrypted and remain subject to content moderation.

Key features

Servers and channels: Communities can create servers and divide discussion into channels. That structure suits ongoing groups better than one-off meetings, though it does not by itself make Discord a dedicated workplace suite.
Voice, video, and screen sharing: Calls work in direct messages, group direct messages, and voice channels; screen sharing is also supported. This makes Discord useful when a group wants conversation and live collaboration in the same place.
Game streaming: Users can stream games to friends, and supported consoles can send gameplay directly. That is a clear fit for gaming communities, rather than a general-purpose business feature.
Apps and connected accounts: The desktop and browser App Directory lets users find apps for a server or account. Account Connections can link services such as Spotify, Xbox, and PlayStation and show them on a profile.
Developer platform: The Embedded App SDK lets developers build interactive experiences that run inside Discord, giving builders a route to put experiences in front of an existing community.
Account and privacy controls: Passkeys use on-device biometrics, and Discord says it cannot access biometric data. User Settings include data privacy controls, subject to data needed to provide the service and meet legal requirements.
Security distinction: Discord says audio and video calls use end-to-end encryption; messages are not encrypted and remain subject to moderation. Teams handling sensitive written discussions should weigh that distinction carefully.

Pricing

Discord uses a freemium model. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes voice, video, and text chat, community servers, and browser, desktop, and mobile access. For groups that need the core communication tools without paid extras, that is a substantive starting point.

Nitro Basic costs 2.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 50 MB file uploads. It is the lower-cost paid choice for users who need that upload allowance; the plan facts do not establish other additions beyond it.

Nitro costs 9.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes custom emoji and stickers, HD video streaming, and 2 Server Boosts. It fits users who value those presentation and streaming upgrades; users who only need basic chat have less reason to pay for it.

The free plan has no stated price, and neither paid plan specifies a seat quota or trial term. The supplied plans do not state renewal terms beyond monthly billing for Nitro Basic and Nitro.

Platforms

Discord is available on the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with mobile apps and API availability. That breadth makes it practical for communities whose members use different devices and operating systems. The App Directory is available on desktop and browser.

Who it's for

Discord is a strong fit for gaming groups, creator communities, and other communities that want persistent server spaces, voice channels, calls, and streaming in one hosted service. Developers can also use its Embedded App SDK to build interactive experiences that run within the platform.

It is a less natural choice for teams that require encrypted messages or are primarily choosing software around workplace collaboration. The unencrypted-message distinction matters more than the convenience of combining chat and calls for those users.

Pros and cons

Pro — Community-first structure: Servers and channels give groups a persistent way to organize conversations rather than relying only on direct messages.
Pro — Strong gaming fit: Game streaming, voice channels, and supported-console streaming serve gaming communities directly.
Pro — Developer extensibility: The App Directory and Embedded App SDK provide ways to add apps and build in-platform experiences.
Con — Messages are not encrypted: Calls use end-to-end encryption, but text messages do not, which may rule Discord out for sensitive written communication.
Con — Paid extras are segmented: Nitro Basic focuses on 50 MB uploads, while HD video streaming, custom emoji and stickers, and 2 Server Boosts are in the more expensive Nitro plan.

Alternatives

For buyers comparing team chat apps or game voice chat software, the right alternative depends on whether community features or workplace limits matter most.

Pumble is worth comparing when a team values a free plan with unlimited users, unlimited message history, unlimited channels, and 10 GB storage per workspace.
Chanty offers a free plan capped at 5 team members, with 20GB storage per team and up to 10 integrations; consider it when those team limits and integrations fit the group.
Microsoft Teams has a free plan with 100 participants, 60-minute group meetings, and 5 GB cloud storage, which may suit teams working within those meeting and storage caps.
Slack provides free basic chat and collaboration with 90 days of message history and up to ten apps, a fit for teams comfortable with those limits.
Zoho Cliq includes 100 participants per group, 10,000 searchable messages, and 100 GB storage per organization on its free plan, making those explicit group and storage limits useful comparison points.
Rocket.Chat offers a free Starter plan for 50 users and a Community plan for 100 concurrent users; consider it when those capacities suit the deployment.
Teamwire is a paid option with a Small Business plan at 79.00 EUR per month, billed annually, for 25 users and 3 devices per user.
Mattermost is another alternative.

Verdict

Choose Discord when a gaming group or community needs persistent servers, voice and video, streaming, and room to build app experiences around its members. Its free plan covers core communication, but Nitro is necessary for the stated upload and streaming upgrades. Look elsewhere if encrypted messages or a work-first collaboration environment are requirements.
