Overview

Disk Drill is recovery software for macOS and Windows that scans drives and other storage for deleted, lost, or damaged files. It suits individuals who need to check a wide range of media before committing to a paid license; its free edition makes that first assessment possible, while Windows users can also recover up to 100 MB at no cost.

Its breadth is a strength, but licensing draws a clear line: PRO is for personal use, while businesses needing commercial use or multiple users should look at Enterprise.

Key features

Scan and preview before purchase: Basic can scan storage and preview recoverable files. That gives users a way to inspect scan results before upgrading, though the free recovery allowance is limited to 100 MB on Windows and no macOS recovery quota is stated.
Broad storage coverage: Sources include internal and external drives, SSDs, USB drives, SD/CF and other memory cards, cameras, virtual disks, RAID arrays, and disk images. Memory card and RAID recovery are supported, making Disk Drill relevant beyond ordinary desktop drives.
Multiple recovery methods: PRO includes Quick & Deep Scan, Lost Partition Search, and other methods, plus unlimited data recovery. This is the paid tier for users whose needs exceed the Windows free cap.
Protection and platform-specific options: Free protection features include Recovery Vault metadata protection and byte-level backups. The Mac edition can scan Time Machine disks and local snapshots, and describes recovery for iOS and Android devices, including rooted Android devices. The Windows comparison includes NAS and Linux scanning via SSH.
File-format range: Disk Drill says it can reconstruct more than 400 file types. That breadth may suit mixed file collections, though the figure alone does not indicate how well any particular file can be recovered.

Pricing

Basic: 0.00 USD per free. It provides scanning and file previews; Windows recovery is capped at 100 MB. It is the sensible starting point for checking what a scan finds, not a substitute for a paid license when more Windows data must be recovered.

PRO Subscription: 89.00 USD per year, billed annually and automatically renewed unless canceled before renewal. It provides unlimited recovery, covers macOS and Windows, and allows one user up to three simultaneous activations. Future updates and upgrades are included while the subscription is active. Cancellation is permitted anytime, with functionality continuing through the billing period.

PRO Lifetime License: 149.00 USD per once. This one-time purchase includes future updates and upgrades permanently, with one user and up to three simultaneous activations. It cannot be canceled. For ongoing personal use, it avoids annual renewal; the subscription has the lower upfront cost.

Enterprise: Custom pricing. It is the commercial-use option, with multiple users across company and client computers, priority technical support, and forensic data export in DFXML format. Teams that need business use should choose this over PRO, whose license is personal and cannot be used for money-making purposes.

PRO licenses are personal, non-transferable, and cannot be shared or resold. PRO purchases are non-refundable except where consumer protection laws require refunds. Orders are processed by Paddle, which accepts major cards, PayPal, and wire transfers.

Platforms

Disk Drill supports macOS 10.15+ and Windows 10+. A PRO license covers both operating systems, so an individual using a Mac and Windows PC does not need separate platform licenses. Up to three devices can be activated by one user.

Who it's for

Disk Drill is a fit for individuals who need recovery options across several storage types, want to preview scan results before paying, or need Mac-specific Time Machine scanning. Its free edition lowers the barrier to evaluating recovery prospects, and its paid license removes the recovery limit for personal use.

It is not the right PRO choice for commercial recovery work or a team that needs shared licensing. Those buyers should consider Enterprise instead. Users who only need to recover a small amount on Windows may find Basic sufficient.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free scanning and previews let users inspect recoverable files before buying.
Pro: Support for drives, cards, cameras, RAID, virtual disks, and disk images covers a broad set of recovery sources.
Pro: One PRO license covers macOS and Windows, with up to three activations for one user.
Con: Windows Basic recovery stops at 100 MB, limiting its value for larger recovery jobs.
Con: PRO is personal-use only and its license cannot be shared, so it does not suit commercial work or multi-user teams.
Con: The annual plan renews automatically unless canceled before renewal, while the lifetime license requires a larger upfront payment and cannot be canceled.

Verdict

Choose Disk Drill if you want one personal-use recovery license for macOS and Windows, broad storage coverage, and the ability to preview scan results before paying. The main reason to look elsewhere is its strict personal-use PRO license; businesses and teams need Enterprise, while Windows users with modest needs can begin with the 100 MB Basic allowance.
