Overview

Hex is a hosted data platform that brings SQL, Python, and R notebooks together with conversational analysis and data-app building. It suits teams that want analysts and other users to work from shared data sources, especially when analytical workflows need to feed apps or scheduled runs.

Its mix of notebooks, context-aware assistance, and orchestration integrations makes it a credible fit for collaborative analytics. The trade-off is that published-app limits and the distinction between standard and enterprise security controls should shape the plan decision.

Key features

Hex combines notebooks with conversational self-serve, so teams can work in code while also giving users a way to ask questions of data. Real-time collaboration and version history support shared work; Jupyter Notebook and Hex YAML formats give teams two notebook formats to work with. Hosted execution avoids a self-managed deployment, though teams that require self-hosting may need another platform.

Hex says its agent grounds responses in organizational context and can connect with Claude, Codex, Cursor, Slack, MCP, a CLI, APIs, or custom agents. Context Studio and Evals add visibility into topics, trends, and warnings about answer quality. These tools are relevant when an organization wants to monitor how conversational analysis responds to its context, rather than treating generated answers as an unchecked black box.

Users can create data applications from prompts, with code underneath and controls for the finished app. That combination supports faster app creation without hiding the code, but the practical scale of publishing depends on the plan: Community and Professional stop at five published apps, while Team and Enterprise allow unlimited apps.

Integrations span data warehouses, local TXT, CSV, JSON, Parquet, Avro, and XLSX files, metadata and semantic-layer tools, catalogs, machine-learning tools, and workflow orchestrators. Airflow, Dagster, and dbt integrations can trigger analytical flows and app runs from data pipelines, making Hex more suitable for pipeline-linked analytics than a notebook environment without those orchestration connections. GPU compute is supported.

The Trust Center displays SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, CCPA, EU-US DPF, Swiss-US DPF, and UK-US DPF badges. Enterprise adds controls including audit logs, OIDC SSO, OAuth database connections, and Bring Your Own Key. Organizations that need those controls should evaluate Enterprise rather than assume they come with the lower plans.

Pricing

Hex uses a freemium model, with a free plan, paid plans from $36 per user per month, and a 14-day trial. The published plan prices are:

Plan	Price	What it includes
Community	0.00 USD per free	Connect any data source, all cell types, small compute, and a Hex agent trial.
Professional	36.00 USD per month, billed per Editor / month	Hex agent, standard credits, up to 5 published apps, 30-day version history, and medium compute.
Team	75.00 USD per month, billed per Editor / month	Extended credits, unlimited published apps, scheduled runs and alerts, unlimited version history, and advanced compute add-ons.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Explorer seat add-on, audit logs, OIDC SSO, Bring Your Own Key, single tenant add-on, and dedicated support.

Community is aimed at hobbyists and small projects: it provides broad data-source access and all cell types, but only small compute and an agent trial. Professional is the individual-user step up, adding the Hex agent and medium compute, but it still caps published apps at five and version history at 30 days. Team is the more natural choice for companies collaborating on data: the higher per-Editor price buys unlimited published apps, scheduled runs and alerts, and unlimited version history. Advanced compute is an add-on, not a stated inclusion without qualification.

Enterprise is for organizations that need additional security, governance, and support; it also offers a single-tenant add-on. Its custom pricing means teams should weigh the controls and dedicated support against the lower tiers rather than treat it as a fixed-price upgrade. Community and Professional include email support, Team has priority SLA support options, and Enterprise has SLA support options that can include Slack and Microsoft Teams where offered.

Platforms

Hex is available on the web and through an API. Its hosted execution model, real-time collaboration, SQL, Python, and R support make it a fit for teams working across notebooks and applications, but not for teams whose requirement is self-hosted execution.

Who it's for

Hex is strongest for individuals and data teams that want a shared place for notebook analysis, conversational access, and data apps, with integrations to existing warehouses and pipeline orchestrators. The Team plan aligns with collaborative company use; Enterprise is the better fit when audit logs, SSO, key management, or dedicated support are central requirements. A hobbyist can start with Community, while a single analyst who needs the agent and moderate compute has a clear Professional tier.

Hex says its system supports over 2,000 customers globally, including leading AI labs and regulated banks. That breadth is relevant context for organizations considering it, but teams should still choose based on their own integration, publishing, and security requirements.

Pros and cons

Pro: Notebooks, conversational self-serve, and app building sit in one platform, which suits teams moving between analysis and data products.
Pro: Warehouse, file, semantic-layer, and orchestration integrations can connect analytical work to existing data pipelines.
Pro: Team removes the five-app publishing ceiling and includes scheduled runs, alerts, and unlimited version history.
Con: Community and Professional both cap published apps at five, limiting those tiers for teams publishing several data products.
Con: Professional's version history lasts 30 days; longer retention requires the Team tier's unlimited history.
Con: Key security controls such as audit logs, OIDC SSO, and Bring Your Own Key are Enterprise features, whose price is custom.

Alternatives

For a broader set of analytics categories, browse Augmented Analytics Software, Notebook Software, Data Science Platforms, SQL Query Tools, and Coding Playgrounds.

Choose Predict.ai if its free tier's stated usage allowance, single workspace, and one-seat setup match a small project, or if self-hosted availability matters. Panorama is a paid alternative available on web, API, and Windows. Akkio is another freemium option with web, API, and self-hosted availability, and an enterprise AI analytics plan with custom pricing.

Polymer may suit a narrower file-and-Sheets workflow: its Basic plan is 10.00 USD per month, with one editor, manual syncing, and no PolyAI chat responses. DataRobot is a paid alternative with a one-time 30-day self-service SaaS trial for up to five team members. Salesforce CRM Analytics is a paid option whose CRM Analytics Growth plan includes Sales Analytics and Service Analytics, Analytics Studio, and Data Platform.

Tellius is a paid alternative with a Premium plan described for up to 10 users and 50M rows in live mode. TIBCO Spotfire is another paid option, with a Spotfire Analytics plan priced at 3000.00 USD per year per user, excluding tax.

Verdict

Choose Hex if your team wants collaborative notebooks that can extend into conversational analysis and published data apps, particularly when those workflows should connect to warehouses and orchestration pipelines. Its clearest reason to choose it is the breadth across analysis, app building, and pipeline integration. Look elsewhere if you need self-hosting, more than five apps on a lower-cost plan, or enterprise security controls without moving to custom-priced Enterprise.
