Overview

Instructors can use PrairieLearn for class activities, homework, practice, and tests, including proctored and bring-your-own-device exams. Its defining approach is to author questions as code that generates and grades variants; students can keep trying new versions until they reach mastery, with real-time feedback. That is a good fit for courses where practice should adapt across attempts, but less compelling for teams seeking a conventional fixed-question quiz workflow.

PrairieLearn is open source and can be modified and run on institutional infrastructure. This provides control over deployment, but PrairieLearn does not support self-hosted installations, so operational ownership and support are separate concerns.

Key features

Programmable assessment: Automatically generated variants make repeated practice more useful than repeating an identical prompt. Supported answers include numerical, multiple-choice, checkbox, dropdown, graphical, code, and ordered-block responses.
Grading and content: Programming and math autograding, written-work OCR, and question banks support courses with mixed assessment needs. Code autograding is excluded from Basic, so courses that depend on it need Premium or another deployment arrangement.
LMS integration: LTI 1.3 supports assignment linking and grade syncing, with integration primarily designed and documented for Canvas. QTI 1.2 import can bring in quizzes, assessments, question banks, and questions from Canvas or other LMSs, easing content migration.
Security and support: PrairieLearn, Inc. states it has a SOC 2 Type I attestation for Security and encrypts customer data at rest and in transit using TLS 1.2 or higher. Support includes documentation, Slack, GitHub Discussions, weekly Zoom office hours and workshops, and email; self-hosted installations are outside its support.

Pricing

PrairieLearn combines free access for small courses with per-student charges for larger ones. The Free plan is 0.00 USD per free and covers instructors and courses with up to 20 students in each term. Basic is 8.00 USD per once, charged for every student when a course exceeds 20 students; it excludes code autograding, workspaces, and PrairieTest. Premium is 16.00 USD per once, also charged for every student above the 20-student threshold, and includes those three features. Basic is the lower-cost route for larger courses that do not need the excluded tools; Premium is the more suitable paid tier for coding courses or those using workspaces and PrairieTest.

Enterprise has custom pricing through a service agreement. The separate PrairieTest plans are annual fees for non-PrairieLearn exam reservations: Starter is 3.00 USD per year with 20k included reservations, Small is 5.00 USD per year with 50k, Medium is 7.00 USD per year with 100k, Large is 10.00 USD per year with 200k, and Enterprise is 15.00 USD per year with no reservation limit. These tiers suit institutions buying exam reservations independently of PrairieLearn courses. A free trial is offered.

Platforms

PrairieLearn supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. For local development, documentation supports native execution on macOS and Linux and Windows inside WSL 2; Windows without WSL 2 is not supported for local installation.

Who it's for

PrairieLearn suits instructors and institutions that can author coded questions and want students to practice through automatically varied attempts. Its response formats and LMS connectivity make it useful for courses combining computational work with other question types. Teams that need vendor support for their own infrastructure should look elsewhere, as should courses that want code autograding but plan to use Basic.

Pros and cons

Pros: Generated variants and mastery retries support repeated practice; broad answer formats and autograding cover different assessment styles; LTI grade syncing and QTI 1.2 import connect it to LMS workflows; open-source self-hosting allows institutional modification.
Cons: Code-based authoring is a specialized workflow; courses exceeding 20 students incur per-student charges; Basic omits code autograding, workspaces, and PrairieTest; self-hosted users do not receive PrairieLearn support.

Alternatives

For a wider set of grading products, start with Automated Grading Software.

CodeGrade is a freemium option for code-focused courses needing GitHub integration, drag-and-drop autograding, inline feedback, and a free tier for up to 50 students per course.
codePost offers a free service for computer science educators and supports self-hosting.
ClassMarker is an alternative for teams seeking assessment across web and mobile platforms.
HackerRank is a paid option for screening and interviews, with its Starter plan at 165.00 USD per month, billed $1,990 annually, for one user and 120 attempts per year.
Codio is a paid alternative with a 10.00 USD per month plan for unlimited courses and labs.
Vocareum is a paid alternative with a 10.00 USD per month Individual / Academic plan per monthly active user; additional resource fees apply for AI, virtual machines, and cloud labs.
MATLAB Grader is free with a MATLAB license current under maintenance, with LMS integration requiring a qualifying academic license.
Socrative is a freemium option for classroom quizzes, with a free tier capped at five quizzes, one room, and 50 students per activity.

Verdict

Choose PrairieLearn if your course benefits from coded, automatically varied questions, mastery retries, and LMS-connected assessment. The open-source deployment option and broad response formats are meaningful strengths, but larger courses should compare Basic and Premium per-student costs, and teams that need support for self-hosting should choose another route.
