Overview

DocuSign eSignature is a cloud-based electronic signature service for sending, signing, and managing agreements. It suits teams that need reusable agreement workflows and integrations with existing business systems, but its per-user annual commitments and envelope caps make usage planning important.

Key features

Templates, approval workflows, signature order options, and renewal tracking cover more of the agreement process than collecting a signature alone. Audit trails support traceability, while bulk sending is useful for repeatable, high-volume requests. Signers can complete documents on any device without creating an account, reducing friction for recipients.

More than 1,100 pre-built integrations give teams multiple routes to connect eSignature to their existing stack. API access is also available. SMS authentication adds a verification option, though SMS sending starts at $0.36 per delivery, so that choice can add transaction costs.

The plans table lists ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, WCAG 2.0 Level AA, and GDPR. Enhanced plans add centralized administration for users, policies, and integrations, along with single sign-on and 24/7 live technical support. Those controls are more relevant to larger organizations than to an individual sender.

Pricing

DocuSign offers a free plan and a 30-day trial for starting to send, sign, and manage agreements. Paid plans are priced per user and billed annually; additional tax may apply.

Personal: $11.00 USD per month, billed annually, with an annual commitment of $132 and a limit of 5 envelopes per month. It is the lowest-cost paid option, but the small monthly allowance makes it a fit for occasional individual use rather than steady team workflows.
Standard: $30.00 USD per user per month, billed annually, with an annual commitment of $360 per user. It allows 100 envelopes per user per year and up to 50 users, making it the more relevant step up for teams that need shared use at a defined per-user quota.
Business Pro: $45.00 USD per user per month, billed annually, with an annual commitment of $540 per user. It has the same 100-envelope annual allowance and 50-user cap as Standard, so the higher price needs to be justified by the additional plan capabilities rather than greater envelope volume.
Enhanced plans: Custom pricing, with customized envelope limits, centralized organization management, 24/7 live technical support, and single sign-on. This is the enterprise option for organizations that need administrative controls beyond the capped standard plans.

Qualifying annual subscriptions can receive a refund within 30 days. Monthly plans can be canceled at any time without billing for the next month. Compare the annual commitment and envelope allowance with expected sending volume before choosing a per-user plan.

Platforms

DocuSign eSignature is a cloud deployment with API access. Its broad pre-built integration catalog and recipient access from any device can suit stacks where documents need to move between systems and outside signers.

Who it's for

It is a strong fit for teams that want signature collection connected to templates, approvals, audit trails, and renewal tracking, especially when pre-built integrations or API access matter. Individual users with only occasional needs may find Personal's five-envelope monthly cap sufficient. Teams with heavier or less predictable volume should check the per-user annual limits and consider whether custom enterprise allowances are necessary.

Pros and cons

Pro: Templates, approvals, audit trails, and renewal tracking support a broader agreement workflow than signing alone.
Pro: More than 1,100 pre-built integrations plus API access offer flexibility for connecting the service to a team's stack.
Pro: Recipients can sign on any device without an account, avoiding a signup hurdle for external parties.
Con: Personal allows only 5 envelopes per month, while Standard and Business Pro each cap usage at 100 envelopes per user per year.
Con: The paid plans carry annual commitments, and Business Pro costs more than Standard without a higher envelope allowance.
Con: SMS sending starts at $0.36 per delivery, adding cost when that authentication or delivery channel is used.

Alternatives

For notarization-specific workflows, compare Notaron, NotaryCentral, OneNotary, Proof Notarize, Secured Signing, BlueNotary, and Online Notary Center; their listed positioning and plans focus on online or general notary services rather than DocuSign's agreement workflow breadth. OneSpan Sign is another API-platform option, with a Professional plan at $22.00 USD per month billed yearly and 1,000 transactions per user annually; consider it when that transaction allowance is a better fit than DocuSign's envelope caps.

Verdict

Choose DocuSign eSignature if your team needs a mature agreement workflow that combines signing with templates, approvals, audit trails, renewals, and extensive integration options. Look elsewhere if the annual per-user commitment or envelope ceilings do not match your sending volume, or if your central need is notarization rather than general agreement signing.
