Overview

GitBook is a collaborative platform for authoring and publishing branded documentation, with public and restricted-access options. It is a strong fit for software teams that want documentation changes to follow Git-style review alongside a managed publishing workflow. Its breadth is appealing, but per-site and per-user pricing can make expansion costly.

Key features

Teams can write in a block-based editor or Markdown, and GitHub or GitLab synchronization supports source-controlled workflows. Git Sync adds branching, review, and merging, a useful way to treat documentation updates more like code changes. Preview deployments and site variants support review before publication and different documentation presentations.

Published sites support custom domains, responsive layouts, SEO, redirects, and analytics. GitBook does not limit traffic to published documentation, so readership growth does not run into a stated page-view ceiling. Tiered permissions control viewing and editing; authenticated access can restrict docs to selected customers, team members, or other authorized users, using providers such as Okta, Azure, Auth0, AWS Cognito, OIDC, or a custom backend.

GitBook Agent can find documentation gaps, draft updates, and review changes. Assistant answers questions using documentation and connected sources, with conversational context and user data. Both can connect with Slack, Linear, and GitHub. The Free plan’s 10 Agent messages per week is a narrow allowance, while Ultimate includes 500 successful Assistant answers. Compatible AI tools and coding agents can access documentation through llms.txt, llms-full.txt, Markdown versions, and an MCP connection; setup options include Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor.

The REST API supports GET, POST, PATCH, and DELETE for content, collaboration, and integrations. GitBook also offers built-in integrations for services spanning source control, analytics, authentication, feature flags, and support. Security-conscious buyers get stated SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001:2022 compliance, encryption at rest and in transit, and U.S. data-center storage, with some cached assets served through a CDN.

Pricing

GitBook is freemium, with a 14-day free trial. Annual billing includes two months free. Paid plans charge per site, and Premium and Ultimate also add $12 per user/month, so growing teams should estimate both site and seat costs.

Free: 0.00 USD per free, billed per site/month. For individuals, it includes one free user, unlimited page views, and 10 Agent messages per week. It is a useful solo starting point, but the single-user cap and small AI allowance make it unsuitable for a working team.
Premium: 65.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. Aimed at public, branded documentation, it includes unlimited page views, a custom domain, AI search, analytics, and site redirects. It suits teams focused on public docs, but does not include the Assistant and authenticated access listed with Ultimate.
Ultimate: 249.00 USD per month, billed per site/month when billed annually, plus $12 per user/month. It adds AI Assistant, authenticated access, and 500 successful Assistant answers to unlimited page views. This fits teams needing restricted docs and AI answers, though teams with sustained answer demand should account for the included quota.
Enterprise: custom pricing. It includes Ultimate features, SAML SSO, custom integrations, dedicated support, user training, migration, and a custom contract and invoicing. It is aimed at global teams that need centralized docs and a more tailored support and purchasing arrangement.

Platforms

GitBook supports web and API access. The API and integrations make it relevant to teams connecting documentation with existing tools, while the web platform handles authoring and publishing.

Who it's for

GitBook suits product and engineering teams that value source-controlled review, branded public documentation, or authenticated customer and internal docs. Its strongest case is when those workflows, publishing, and AI assistance belong in one platform. Solo authors can start free; teams should compare their expected seat count, site count, and AI usage with the paid-plan charges and limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Git Sync supports branching, review, and merging, giving teams a structured workflow for documentation changes.
Pro: Unlimited published traffic, custom domains, analytics, and redirects support public docs without a stated page-view cap.
Pro: Authenticated access and tiered permissions allow documentation to serve public and restricted audiences.
Con: Free includes only one user, and Agent use is limited to 10 messages weekly, so it is not a durable team tier.
Con: Paid plans charge per site and add $12 per user/month, raising the cost as documentation sites and teams expand.
Con: Ultimate’s 500 successful Assistant answers may constrain teams that expect frequent AI-assisted support.

Alternatives

Consider AutomaDocs if self-hosting matters or a documentation workflow centered on GitHub, automatic sync on push, and a free allowance of 50 AI chat messages per month better fits your needs.

Documentation.AI may suit teams prioritizing a free tier with five editor seats, one project, and one-time AI credits, or a $55 monthly Standard plan billed yearly.

InkLoom is worth comparing if self-hosting is important or its free forever plan, unlimited pages, and one free user per project fit your starting point.

Docny is another documentation platform to compare.

Scribe is another option to compare for documentation generation.

Redocly may fit buyers seeking a per-seat Pro plan at 10.00 USD per month, with one project and 100 pages; extra projects and pages carry separate charges.

Mintlify is worth considering if a free plan with five editor seats, a custom domain, authentication, an MCP server, and an API playground better matches the team's priorities.

Tango is another alternative to compare.

Verdict

Choose GitBook if your team wants Git-centered documentation review paired with branded publishing, access controls, and connected AI tools. Its main advantage is bringing those needs together without a published-traffic cap; look elsewhere if per-site and per-user charges, the free tier’s one-user ceiling, or AI answer limits do not fit your scale.
