Overview

Dolphin is KDE’s file manager for working with local storage and remote files. It suits Linux users who want configurable browsing and useful file operations in one place. Its breadth and open-source license are compelling; Windows users should treat it as a testing option rather than a settled everyday choice.

It handles creating, moving, deleting, compressing, sharing, and duplicating files and folders across hard drives, USB sticks, SD cards, and other storage. The core workflow is flexible: tabs keep multiple folders open, while split view makes it easier to move or copy files between locations by drag and drop. That combination pays off for people who regularly organize files across projects or drives, but is more capability than a single-folder workflow requires.

Dolphin is free and licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later. KDE says its software has no ads, spyware, subscription services, forced updates, or secret crypto-mining. Users can use, study, change, and redistribute it, making the license and lack of a purchase price meaningful strengths for teams that value software freedom.

Key features

Browsing and file operations

Grid, detailed, and tree views support visual browsing, closer inspection of file details, and navigation through folder structure. Most behavior can be configured, which helps Dolphin adapt to established workflows, though users who prefer a fixed and minimal interface may not benefit from all that flexibility.

Batch rename and archive support extend the everyday file-management toolkit. The right-click menu can compress, share, and duplicate files, and custom actions let users add context-menu operations. These options keep common tasks near the files themselves; they do not replace a dedicated tool where a workflow requires capabilities beyond the supported actions.

Remote access and extensions

Dolphin can display files and folders from internet cloud services and remote machines. Its named integrations include Git and Nextcloud plugins, with extensions for Google Drive, Amazon S3, Samba sharing, and local network services. Additional plugins cover Bazaar and Mercurial, Dropbox sync actions, and mounting or unmounting disk images. This makes Dolphin a stronger fit for mixed local and remote file work than a manager limited to local folders, while the breadth of extensions may matter less to users who only browse local storage.

Terminal in the current folder

The integrated terminal runs commands in the folder being viewed. That is a practical bridge for developers who want to switch between file browsing and command-line work without navigating to the same location separately. It is a convenience within the file manager, not a substitute for a full terminal environment.

Pricing

Dolphin costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the file manager for Linux and Windows downloads, and the product is open source under GPL-2.0-or-later. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. KDE accepts donations through PayPal and other methods; a donation is optional, not a subscription tier.

There are no paid tiers, seat limits, or usage quotas to weigh against the free plan. That is an unusually straightforward fit for individuals and teams that want a capable file manager without recurring software costs. The trade-off is that readers seeking a vendor-backed paid service or a product tier with defined commercial support should consider alternatives.

Platforms

Dolphin supports Linux and Windows. Linux installation is available through Discover, other AppStream stores, or a distribution package manager, with a Flathub download also offered. Nightly Flatpak and Windows installers are generated from the development branch for testing. That gives Linux users several installation routes, while Windows users should be cautious about relying on a testing build for a production workflow.

Support resources include the Dolphin Handbook, KDE forum, bug reporting, and contribution documentation. The project provides clear routes for learning and seeking help, but teams that require a defined commercial support commitment should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Dolphin is a strong choice for Linux users who want tabs, side-by-side folder work, configurable views, archive handling, and access to remote files without paying for a license. Developers may especially value the current-folder terminal and Git-related plugins. It is also a reasonable fit for users who want an open-source manager they can study or adapt.

It is less suited to Windows users who need a stable, production-oriented installer, or to teams whose primary requirement is a commercial support arrangement. Users who only need basic single-folder browsing may also find its configurable views, extensions, and split workflow unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free and GPL-2.0-or-later, with no paid tier or per-seat cost to manage.
Pro: Tabs and split view make moving and copying between folders more direct.
Pro: Three view modes, batch rename, archive support, and configurable context actions cover a broad range of file tasks.
Pro: Remote file access, cloud and network extensions, and an integrated terminal support workflows beyond local browsing.
Con: Windows installers are testing builds from the development branch, making them a weaker choice for users who need a production-ready Windows download.
Con: The breadth of configuration and plugins may be needless complexity for people who only need basic file navigation.
Con: Support resources are documentation, forums, bug reporting, and contribution channels rather than a defined commercial support plan.

Alternatives

File Manager Software is the broader directory for comparing file managers. Among the listed alternatives, the right choice depends on whether the priority is file transfer, broader platform coverage, or a Windows-focused dual-pane workflow.

Filestash is worth considering when web, self-hosted, mobile, and API platform coverage matters more than Dolphin’s Linux-focused desktop workflow. Its free Hobby plan supports up to 3 users; the Self Served plan costs 50.00 USD per month, billed monthly.
WinSCP is the better fit for Windows users whose main task is file transfer across SFTP, FTP, FTPS, SCP, WebDAV, or S3 protocols.
FileRun is an option for teams seeking a paid file-management product across desktop, mobile, web, self-hosted, and API platforms. Its Small business plan costs 9.90 EUR per year, billed annually, at €9.9/user/year for 10 or 20 user accounts.
muCommander is another free, open-source choice for Linux, macOS, and Windows users who want a cross-platform file manager.
Total Commander is an alternative for users who want a freemium file manager for Windows and Android.
Multi Commander suits Windows users looking for free dual-pane management, tabs, batch renaming, archive management, and a portable version.
TagSpaces is another option for readers comparing file managers across Linux, macOS, Windows, mobile, web, and self-hosted environments.
OneCommander is a Windows alternative with a free home-use plan for non-commercial personal use.

Verdict

Choose Dolphin if you want a free, open-source Linux file manager with flexible views, strong folder-to-folder workflows, remote file access, and useful developer integrations. Its main reason to choose it is the amount of capability available without a license cost. Look elsewhere if you need a production-ready Windows installer or a defined commercial support plan.
