Overview

Joomla is a free, open-source CMS for publishing web content, built on an MVC framework that can also be used independently. It suits teams that need granular access control, multilingual publishing or room to extend a self-hosted site. Its breadth is compelling, but operating it means taking responsibility for technical requirements and security updates.

Key features

Joomla supports multiple users with different permission levels to create, edit, archive, publish and distribute content. Its Access Control List organizes users, groups and permissions, making it a strong fit for sites where publishing responsibilities need to be separated. Editorial workflows, custom user roles, scheduled publishing, article management and content versioning add practical control for teams with ongoing publishing needs.

Core SEO tools include metadata, keywords and search-engine-friendly URLs. The media library and custom content types support varied publishing needs, while more than 70 accredited language packages help teams produce multilingual sites. These are meaningful capabilities for organizations managing substantial or varied content, rather than a promise of a turnkey design experience.

The Joomla Extensions Directory contains thousands of extensions, most available free under the GPL. That gives teams options to extend the CMS without changing its core, though choosing and maintaining extensions adds decisions to the work of running a site. Joomla also offers built-in two-factor authentication and a volunteer Security Strike Team; its security feed directs users to upgrade to 5.4.9 or 6.1.4 for listed vulnerabilities. Teams need a process for applying relevant updates.

Joomla 6's default templates align with WCAG 2.2 AA and include skip links and accessibility tools. Support comes through an official community forum, online documentation, an issue tracker and contextual help inside the application. The MVC framework can also be used independently, which broadens its appeal to developers building beyond a conventional CMS.

Pricing

Joomla! CMS — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is GPL-licensed CMS software with no stated user or content quota. It is a fit for teams comfortable obtaining and running the software themselves; the tradeoff is that they must meet Joomla's technical requirements and handle site operations.

For those who would rather not install the CMS, Joomla offers a fully functional free website through launch.joomla.org. This provides another way to start without a self-installation step.

Platforms

Joomla is listed for API, Linux, self-hosted and web use, with a hybrid platform type. Self-hosting suits teams that want to operate the CMS in their own environment; the technical requirements should be reviewed before choosing that route. The hosted launch.joomla.org option avoids installing the CMS yourself.

Who it's for

Joomla is used for corporate and small-business sites, intranets, publications, e-commerce, government and community websites, and personal homepages. Its combination of access controls, editorial tools and multilingual support particularly suits teams with multiple contributors and structured publishing needs. A team seeking a managed, design-first site builder may prefer another approach; Joomla's strengths are its extensibility and control, not a claim of zero operational work.
