Overview

Duolingo is a learning app for people who want short, adaptable practice across languages, chess, and math. It is strongest for individual learners building a regular study habit; teams seeking a defined training program or buyers comparing quantified learning outcomes should look elsewhere. The free plan makes it easy to begin, but the paid subscriptions’ prices and terms are not established here.

Language study covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with 40 listed languages. Quick lessons adapt to a learner’s level and pace, while placement tests and personalized review help direct practice. That breadth and flexibility suit casual or self-directed learners, though the available outcomes are not quantified.

Duolingo describes its teaching methods as research-backed and says research shows its learning works. Treat that as the company’s claim rather than a measure of results. Offline lessons and speech practice broaden how learners can study, but the service is not a substitute for a structured course if a buyer needs specified instruction or measurable outcomes.

Key features

Multiple subjects: Language courses sit alongside chess and math, making Duolingo relevant beyond language study. Those extra subjects are useful for learners who want several topics in one app, but the core skill set is clearest for languages.
Four language skills: Lessons address reading, writing, listening, and speaking, including speech practice. This gives a learner a broad practice mix rather than focusing only on vocabulary recognition.
Adaptive practice: Lessons adjust to learner level and pace; a placement test and personalized review help shape what to study. This is a good fit for independent learners with different starting points, though no outcome measures are provided.
Short sessions and prompts: Bite-sized lessons, game-like features, challenges, and reminders encourage frequent practice. The format can make fitting study into a routine easier, but it favors repeated brief sessions over a long-form course experience.
Offline lessons: Learners can study offline, which is useful when connectivity is unreliable. Speech practice is also included.
English test and other offerings: The Duolingo English Test is described as fast, affordable, and AI-enabled, with users able to take it wherever and whenever they perform best. Duolingo also lists offerings for schools and businesses, plus Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max subscriptions.

Pricing

Duolingo uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and gives learners a no-cost way to begin. The pricing note also mentions a 14-day trial, so check the applicable terms for the specific offering before starting one.

Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max are subscription products, but their prices and inclusions are not established here. They are therefore difficult to compare on cost or suitability; learners should confirm the current offer and renewal terms before committing. The free plan is the clear starting point for solo learners who want to try the lessons without a subscription, while buyers needing a priced, defined paid tier should compare terms before choosing.

Platforms

Duolingo is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web, with cloud and mobile deployment. Mobile apps are available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Offline lessons provide an additional option for studying away from an internet connection.

Who it's for

Duolingo is best suited to solo learners who value short practice sessions, reminders, and lessons that adjust to their pace. Its language breadth and inclusion of chess and math also suit people who want several study subjects in one service. The stated company-size fit spans solo users through enterprise, and Duolingo lists separate business and school offerings; buyers evaluating those options should confirm the relevant plans and terms.

It is less compelling for a team that needs clearly defined subscription costs, or for a learner choosing a service on independently quantified outcomes. The English test may suit users looking for an AI-enabled English assessment they can take at a time and place that works for them.

Verdict

Choose Duolingo if you are a self-directed learner who wants brief, adaptive practice, broad language choice, and a free place to start. Its mix of offline lessons, speech practice, reminders, and additional subjects gives it range without requiring a paid plan up front. Look elsewhere if you need transparent paid-tier costs or quantified evidence to compare expected learning results.
