Overview

The service runs the corresponding government check for a share code and returns the result as JSON. Responses can include the outcome, dates, conditions, applicant photo and government PDF, while an audit trail supports record-keeping. It is not affiliated with HM Government, the Home Office or gov.uk.

Right-to-work checks target UK employers, recruitment agencies and hiring platforms. Right-to-rent checks are for landlords and letting agents in England, and apply to every adult tenant. The home page also allows two live checks a day without an account, a useful way to try the process before committing to a plan.

Key features

API and callbacks

API access is the main reason to consider this service over a manual checking workflow: teams can place checks inside an existing hiring or rental process. Asynchronous checks can post signed results to a callback URL, including on the sandbox plan. The documentation includes cURL, Node.js and Python examples, and Node.js requires no SDK. The available rate limits still vary by plan, so teams with bursty traffic should match their expected request rate to the tier.

Data handling and procurement

Live check inputs and gov.uk pages are retained for up to seven days to investigate failed or disputed checks, then deleted automatically. That defined window may help with short-term investigation, but teams needing longer access to source material should account for their own record-keeping needs. The maker says customer and applicant data is processed within the UK and EEA, with no transfers outside those regions during a check. API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes, traffic uses TLS, and Stripe handles card data rather than the service storing it. A published data processing agreement and countersignable PDF support procurement review; support enquiries go to support@checksharecode.co.uk.

Pricing

The freemium structure makes it possible to start without a card, but the free allowance is capped rather than a continuing low-volume paid tier.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
Free	0.00 GBP per free	10 live checks a month, hard stop at 10, no card, sandbox key and 5 requests a second	Evaluation or a very small monthly workload that can tolerate a hard stop
Pro	14.00 GBP per month	100 live checks a month, then £0.25 a check; 20 requests a second; email support from Matthew	Small teams with predictable checks and moderate integration traffic
Scale	49.00 GBP per month	500 live checks a month, then £0.10 a check; 50 requests a second	Higher-volume teams that benefit from a lower overage rate and higher request limit
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Invoiced monthly; volume-based rate, SLA, named contact, signed DPA and higher rate limits	Organizations that need negotiated volume terms, procurement support or stronger service commitments

Pro is an inexpensive step up from Free, but its 100-check allowance means growing workloads incur overages. Scale raises the included volume and reduces the per-check overage, making it the more sensible listed tier for sustained usage above Pro's cap. Enterprise is the route for higher limits and an SLA, though it requires a custom quote. No seat limits are given.

Platforms

The service supports web and API access. That combination suits teams that need both a human-facing route and integration into their software stack; a web-only process will not use the API's automation advantage.

Who it's for

Right To Work Checker is a practical fit for UK hiring teams, recruitment agencies and platforms that need to automate share-code checks, as well as English landlords and letting agents checking adult tenants. Teams should be comfortable with share-code verification and with handling any longer-term records beyond the service's seven-day retention period. It is less compelling for organizations whose volume regularly exceeds plan limits or that need a broader government-affiliation relationship.

Pros and cons

Pros: Signed asynchronous callbacks are included even on the sandbox plan, so teams can build and validate an integration before upgrading.
Pros: The free tier requires no card and permits 10 live checks monthly, while the home page offers two checks a day without signup.
Pros: UK/EEA processing claims, hashed API keys, TLS and a countersignable DPA give procurement teams concrete points to assess.
Cons: Free checks stop hard at 10 per month, making that plan unsuitable for an ongoing workload above the cap.
Cons: Live inputs and government pages are deleted after up to seven days, so longer retention must be addressed separately.
Cons: Pro and Scale both charge for checks beyond their monthly allowances; the appropriate tier depends on forecasting volume.

Alternatives

Right to Work Verification Software is a broader category directory for comparing options. Consider Experian Data Quality Solutions instead when a paid, trial-available API and web solution with a tailored consultation better fits procurement. TrustID Right to Work uses credit pricing with a 100-check minimum and no set-up costs or admin fees, which may suit buyers preferring a purchased check bundle.

Verifit offers a quoted per-seat plan with all capabilities included, so it is an option when seat-based pricing is preferable. Credas Right to Work may fit teams seeking Android and iOS alongside web and API access; its Gateway plan has five users, one branch or brand, charges per invite, and includes training and support. GryphonHR offers a $50 monthly Basic plan on a one-year term, billed monthly, for 1 to 100 annual new hires and unlimited users.

CheckWorkRights is another paid employer-focused option with web, API, Android and iOS access. vSure charges $0.90 per successful API check, with a $2.00 maximum cost and failed checks uncharged, which may suit teams that prefer per-check billing. GOV.UK Right to Work Checking Service is a free, web-only alternative for teams that do not need API access.

Verdict

Choose Right To Work Checker if you need UK share-code checks embedded in a web or API workflow and can fit your usage within its monthly allowances or overage rates. Signed callbacks across every plan, including sandbox, are its clearest practical advantage. Look elsewhere if you need longer source-data retention, a free allowance without a hard stop, or a provider with a different pricing or platform model.
