Overview

The app brings game discovery, a personal collection and friends’ activity together around EA releases. It can show what friends are playing and highlight new EA games, which helps regular EA players keep track of their library and coordinate sessions. EA says its optimized platform reduces the steps and clicks between downloading and playing; that is the intended convenience, though the app’s usefulness remains closely tied to EA games.

For PC players, installing it is not optional for EA games launched through Steam or Epic. EA replaced Origin with this app on PC and Mac. It updates automatically at login unless it is already running when an update launches, so players should expect the launcher to stay current rather than manage updates manually.

Key features

Accounts and social connections

EA Account linking covers PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Epic Games, Discord, Twitch, YouTube, Amazon Prime Gaming and Amazon Luna. Importing friends lists and seeing their activity can make the launcher more useful for groups spread across services. Discord linking adds Rich Presence with status, game-mode details, party size and EA membership status, giving friends more context before joining.

Play and library tools

Cloud saves and offline mode support access beyond a single online session, while third-party game import can bring some games into the launcher’s collection. These features add convenience for existing EA users, but do not change the central limitation: the app is available only on Windows and macOS.

Privacy and support

EA’s privacy policy describes use of analytics, advertising, anti-cheat and anti-fraud technologies, and collection of device, IP-address, gameplay and account information. That matters to players weighing account linking and online services against data collection. For installation problems, EA directs users to customer support through EA Help.

Pricing

The EA app has a free plan, so downloading and using the launcher does not require a subscription. Paid plans add access to subscription game catalogs and related benefits; both are billed monthly.

Plan	Price	What it includes
EA Play	5.99 USD per month	EA game collection, select new-release trials of up to 10 hours, monthly rewards and a 10% discount on digital purchases.
EA Play Pro	16.99 USD per month	Premium-edition game collection, premium editions of select new games on day one and a 10% discount on digital purchases.

EA Play is the lower-cost fit for players who want a game collection, limited trials and monthly rewards without paying for premium editions. EA Play Pro is for subscribers who want premium editions of select new releases on day one; its higher monthly price is harder to justify if those releases are not a priority. Both plans retain the 10% digital-purchase discount.

Platforms

The Windows app requires a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11. The Mac app requires macOS 10.15.8 or later (Catalina or newer). Devices running other operating systems cannot use the EA app, making it unsuitable for Linux users and anyone needing mobile access to the launcher. An EA Account ID and password are required to log in.

Who it's for

Choose EA app if you play EA games on Windows or Mac, want EA friends and game discovery in the same place, or need the launcher to run EA titles purchased through Steam or Epic. EA Play can suit players who want its game collection and trial access; EA Play Pro is aimed at those who value premium editions of select new games on day one. Look elsewhere if Linux or mobile support is essential, or if you want a launcher whose main purpose is organizing a broader collection across operating systems.

Pros and cons

Pros: Required for EA games launched through Steam or Epic on PC, so it provides the access those players need.
Pros: Account linking and Discord Rich Presence expose friends’ activity and useful session details across connected services.
Pros: A free launcher plus two monthly subscription tiers lets players use the app without committing to a paid plan.
Cons: Windows and macOS are the only supported operating systems, ruling out Linux and mobile use.
Cons: Login requires an EA Account ID and password, and EA’s privacy practices include analytics, advertising, anti-cheat and anti-fraud technologies.
Cons: EA Play Pro costs substantially more per month than EA Play, and its defining advantage is limited to premium editions of select new games.

Alternatives

For a free launcher built with open-source technology and available on Linux, consider Lutris; it is the clearest fit for Linux users, though it does not replace the EA app requirement for EA games launched through Steam or Epic on PC. If you want a free, open-source app across Linux, macOS and Windows, itch app is another option.

Steam is a free alternative available on Windows, Mac and Linux as well as iOS and Android. GOG Galaxy is free on Windows and Mac and requires a free GOG account; some platform-specific features require the relevant gaming client. Battle.net has free desktop apps for Windows and Mac plus mobile apps for iOS and Android. LaunchBox offers a free Windows Starter plan for importing and playing games, with a separate paid Regular option. For a free option available across Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and the web, see Epic Games Store. Albion Online Launcher is a freemium option for Windows, Mac and Linux.

For broader comparisons, browse PC Game Launchers, Game Subscription Services, Game Distribution Platforms, Game Launcher Software and Game Anti-Cheat Software.

Verdict

EA app is the practical choice for Windows and Mac players who need to launch EA games and want subscriptions, game discovery and social connections alongside them. The free launcher keeps that access open without a subscription; choose EA Play or Pro only if their catalog and benefits match how you play. Look elsewhere if you need Linux or mobile support, and expect the app to remain part of the setup for EA games launched through Steam or Epic.
