Overview

Elastic Observability brings application and infrastructure telemetry into a shared analysis and incident workflow. It suits teams that need logs, metrics, traces and user-experience monitoring together, especially when they want a choice of managed or customer-run deployment.

Its breadth is the draw; usage-based pricing and retention charges make it less straightforward to budget than a fixed-price monitoring tool.

Key features

Telemetry and incident work

Log pipelines, structured parsing, live tailing and archive export cover both immediate investigation and longer-term log handling. ES|QL supports log analysis, while distributed and transaction tracing, dependency mapping, and log and error correlation help teams follow failures across services. Application and infrastructure monitoring sit alongside alerting, cases and service level objectives, making this a broader operations environment than a log viewer alone.

Real user monitoring includes interaction tracking, geographic breakdowns and Core Web Vitals, with browser checks and one-minute fastest scheduling. Mobile app monitoring is not supported, so teams whose primary need is mobile telemetry should not treat this as a complete fit.

Instrumentation, AI and profiling

OpenTelemetry support includes native data collection without proprietary agents, a useful option for teams avoiding instrumentation lock-in. Elastic also documents zero-configuration anomaly detection, an AI Assistant, AI-powered log parsing with Streams, LLM observability and Universal Profiling. CPU profiling uses stack sampling. The stated integration breadth is substantial: Serverless includes over 350 integrations, and the infrastructure monitoring overview lists more than 400 out-of-the-box integrations.

Pricing

Elastic Observability has a free plan and a 14-day trial; paid pricing is usage-based rather than a single seat price. Serverless charges according to ingested and retained data, with rates varying by telemetry and project tier, so expected volume and retention are central to budgeting.

Serverless tiers

Observability Serverless Logs Essentials is the narrower choice for teams focused on logs. Ingest starts at $0.07/GB and retention at $0.017/GB/month. It includes ad hoc log analysis, built-in and custom dashboards, integrations, alerts and notifications. It gives up the broader full-stack remit of Complete, making it more appropriate when logs are the main requirement.

Observability Serverless Complete targets teams consolidating full-stack telemetry. Logs and traces ingest starts at $0.09/GB, metrics ingest at $0.023/GB, logs and traces retention at $0.019/GB/month, and metrics retention at $0.005/GB/month. Egress is 50 GB free, then $0.05/GB transferred per month. The tier includes private connectivity and IP filtering, relevant for teams with tighter access requirements. These per-GB charges mean sustained ingest and retention can outweigh the apparent simplicity of a managed deployment.

Serverless includes limited support with Standard. Gold, Platinum and Enterprise support cost 5%, 10% and 15% of consumption respectively. Elastic Cloud Serverless has a 99.95% monthly uptime service level agreement. That uptime commitment is useful for production planning, but higher support coverage adds a proportional charge.

The product also has Hosted and self-managed deployment options; paid pricing for other configurations is custom pricing. Self-managed deployment lets teams run on customer infrastructure, while Serverless is fully managed. The stated retention is 30 days, a material constraint for teams that need longer operational history.

Platforms

Elastic Observability supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows environments. The deployment choices span Serverless, Hosted and self-managed, giving teams flexibility to align operations with their infrastructure. Its OpenTelemetry support is especially relevant for mixed stacks, while the 30-day retention window should be weighed against longer-term investigation needs.

Who it's for

This is a strong candidate for engineering and operations teams that need to correlate logs, metrics, traces and user-experience signals, investigate incidents, and use alerting and service objectives in the same platform. Teams with existing OpenTelemetry instrumentation or varied infrastructure can benefit from the vendor-neutral collection and integration coverage.

It is less suited to buyers who need predictable flat pricing, mobile app monitoring, or retention beyond 30 days without a separately established arrangement. Teams that only need log analysis may find the Essentials tier a closer match than the full-stack option.

Pros and cons

Broad telemetry in one workflow: Logs, metrics, traces, user experience data, alerting, cases and service objectives support cross-signal incident work.
Open instrumentation: Native OpenTelemetry collection without proprietary agents helps avoid dependence on a single instrumentation approach.
Flexible deployment: Serverless, Hosted and self-managed options fit different infrastructure preferences.
Usage-driven cost exposure: Ingest, retention and egress charges can make spend harder to forecast as telemetry grows.
Bounded retention and mobile gap: The stated 30-day retention and lack of mobile app monitoring limit fit for some teams.
Support costs scale with use: Gold, Platinum and Enterprise support add 5%, 10% or 15% of consumption.

Alternatives

Wazuh is worth considering when a free, open-source, self-hosted option is the priority; its open-source plan is 0.00 USD per free.

AlertOps fits teams focused on alert routing and escalation, with a free plan for up to five users and basic routing.

Keep offers a freemium alternative for alert workflows, with a Growth plan at 199.00 USD per month that includes 200 deduplicated alerts per month, unlimited ingested alerts, 100 workflows and 10 users.

PagerDuty is an alternative for incident management, with a free annual-billed tier for five users, one on-call schedule and one escalation policy.

xMatters is another freemium option for response workflows; its Starter (Essentials) plan is 15.00 USD per user / month for up to 25 users.

Zabbix is a freemium alternative for teams considering a different monitoring platform; its Silver plan shows € 245 /month, billed annually.

Alerta is a free alternative.

FirstWave opEvents is a freemium alternative with a commercial module requiring NMIS 9 and a licence.

Verdict

Choose Elastic Observability if your team needs a wide telemetry set, connected incident investigation and a deployment model that can range from managed to self-run. Its OpenTelemetry support and full-stack scope are compelling; usage-based ingest and retention costs, 30-day retention and the absence of mobile app monitoring are reasons to look elsewhere when budget certainty or those specific capabilities matter more.
