Overview

Etherpad is a self-hosted editor for people who need to write together and keep a clear record of who changed what. It suits teams that value control over their documents and a reversible, author-attributed history more than a bundled, turnkey office suite.

Real-time editing is paired with chat, rich-text formatting and a timeslider that lets collaborators inspect revisions character by character. That history is more than an audit trail: changes can be reversed, which makes Etherpad a practical fit for shared drafts and work where accountability matters.

Key features

Authorship and revision history

Etherpad attributes keystrokes to authors and preserves document revisions. The timeslider makes the evolution of a pad inspectable at a fine level, a useful distinction for newsrooms, civic projects, schools and institutions that need to understand how a shared text changed. It is less compelling for teams that primarily need a polished word processor rather than collaborative editing and provenance.

Control and extensibility

Apache 2.0 licensing and an open data format give organizations room to govern their deployment and data. The maker says the software has no telemetry. A plugin framework covers additions such as comments, images, tables, drawing, video chat, math and code highlighting; OAuth, LDAP and OpenID authentication plugins can connect it to existing identity arrangements.

AI is optional rather than built into the editing workflow: plugins can use a model and infrastructure chosen by the user, or AI can remain disabled. That flexibility suits organizations with specific AI governance needs, but it also means the AI experience depends on plugin choices and deployment rather than a single packaged capability.

API and deployment

The HTTP API exposes operations for pad content, authors, groups, sessions and chat, making Etherpad a plausible component in a larger toolchain. Production guidance covers deployment behind a reverse proxy with HTTPS termination and Kubernetes. Installation requires Git and Node.js 24 or later, so teams must be comfortable operating a server and maintaining a software deployment; Etherpad is not the right fit for buyers seeking a hosted service with no setup burden.

The maker lists native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, as well as support for modern browsers. Etherpad has been translated into 105 languages. Maintenance is handled by a small volunteer team, with community contact through Discord and email; organizations that need a commercial support commitment should weigh that carefully.

Pricing

Etherpad is free and open source under Apache 2.0, with no paid plans or seat-based tiers described. The cost tradeoff is operational: users run it on their own server, so deployment and ongoing administration sit with the organization. It is a strong fit for teams able to manage that responsibility and a weaker one for those who want a vendor-managed editor or contracted support.

Platforms

Etherpad supports web browsers and lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Its HTTP API also makes it relevant to teams integrating collaborative editing into their own applications or processes.

Who it's for

Etherpad is best suited to public institutions, schools, civic projects, newsrooms and other teams that need collaborative writing with visible authorship history and control over hosting. Developers can use its API and plugins to adapt it to existing systems. Teams looking for a comprehensive word-processing environment, managed hosting or a large dedicated support organization should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Strong revision accountability: Author attribution and a character-level timeslider help teams review and reverse changes.
Meaningful deployment control: Self-hosting, an open data format and Apache 2.0 licensing let organizations govern how they run the editor.
Useful integration surface: The HTTP API and plugins for authentication and other features offer ways to extend the core editor.
Setup is an operational commitment: Installation requires Git and Node.js 24 or later, and production use requires managing a server deployment.
Volunteer maintenance: A small volunteer team and community contact channels may not meet organizations' needs for formal support commitments.

Alternatives

For a different kind of writing destination, Hashnode offers a free tier and a Pro plan at 5.00 USD per month, with up to 10 publications per account and unlimited articles on Pro; choose it when publishing articles is the priority rather than self-hosted, author-attributed collaborative editing.

Celtx has a free studio limited to one project, with cloud-based script editors and real-time collaboration. It is the more relevant option when scriptwriting is the work to organize.

Write.as offers a free personal blog with branding, limited to 3–15 posts per day; consider it for personal blogging rather than shared editing on a server your team controls.

Overleaf has a free plan with one collaborator per project and unlimited projects. It is the alternative to consider when those project and collaborator limits fit the work.

LyX is free software released under the GPL. It is an alternative for readers comparing free software with a different license and platform set.

Substack is free to start, with no platform fees, tiers or contracts; choose it when that model fits better than running a collaborative editor yourself.

WriterDuet offers three projects on its free plan and lists real-time collaboration on Plus. It is worth considering when a project-based writing tool fits the team's needs.

Campfire has a free trial with limited access to writing and worldbuilding modules and no credit card required. It is an alternative to evaluate for writing and worldbuilding workflows.

Verdict

Choose Etherpad if your team needs real-time shared writing, author-level revision history and the freedom to run the service under its own governance. Its clearest advantage is the combination of reversible history and self-hosting, backed by an API and plugins. Look elsewhere if you need a managed service, formal vendor support or a fuller word-processing environment without server administration.
