Overview

Everest is the open-source modding layer for Celeste, built for players seeking community-made content and creators extending the game. Its combination of mod distribution, dependency handling and developer tools makes it a strong choice for a Celeste mod setup, though Olympus can fail and the Windows Store edition is out.

Mods can add maps, campaigns, graphics, sound, dialogue and code-driven content without altering Celeste’s original files. Everest uses code injection, supports plugins and carries an MIT license; its feature list describes it as TASBot-verified.

Key features

Olympus is the cross-platform installer: it can update itself and inject Everest code into Celeste.exe. One-click installation through Olympus’s Download Mods section or GameBanana is the simplest route, while ZIP and folder installation give users alternatives. Olympus is actively worked on and may fail, so installation is a real point of friction; bug reports go through Celeste Discord’s #modding_help channel.

Once installed, an in-game updater and dependency downloader reduce manual work keeping a mod setup current. Players can switch between Everest and vanilla Celeste from the title screen or Olympus, a useful safeguard for anyone who wants to return to the original game without giving up the modded environment.

Everest’s quality-of-life tools include softlock recovery for most non-vanilla maps, Discord Rich Presence and keyboard-based save-file renaming. Enhanced Debug Mode is the more consequential feature for creators: live map reloading, quick code and asset reloads, a better map viewer and console logging support a tighter edit-and-debug loop. Community-written wiki guides, tutorials, references and troubleshooting information, alongside the Celeste Discord, provide support for players and developers.

Pricing

Everest is free, with no paid tier described. That makes it an accessible option for players and mod creators, but the tradeoff is a volunteer-maintained project rather than a commercial support commitment. The repository says volunteers create, improve and maintain Everest.

Platforms

Everest supports Windows, macOS and Linux, and is for Celeste only. It works with the itch.io, Steam and Epic Games releases, but not the Windows Store version. Check the game edition before choosing Everest; a Windows Store copy is a decisive incompatibility.

Who it's for

Everest suits Celeste players who want community maps, campaigns and other mods, as well as creators who need code, asset and map debugging tools. Dependency handling and multiple installation routes help those managing more involved mod setups. It is less suitable for anyone who needs a guaranteed installer experience or uses the unsupported Windows Store edition.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad content support, from maps and textures to code-driven additions, gives both players and creators room to use and build varied mods.
Pros: In-game updates, dependency downloading and one-click mod installs reduce routine setup work.
Pros: Vanilla switching and recovery from softlocks on most non-vanilla maps help keep experimentation reversible.
Pros: Enhanced Debug Mode provides practical iteration tools for Celeste mod developers.
Cons: Olympus may fail, making installation less dependable than its one-click options suggest.
Cons: Windows Store Celeste is unsupported, limiting the choice for players with that edition.
Cons: Volunteer maintenance means there is no stated commercial support commitment.

Verdict

Choose Everest if you play Celeste on itch.io, Steam or Epic Games and want a capable, free route into community mods—or need a substantial toolset to create them. Its mod management, vanilla switching and debug features make it a compelling Celeste-specific choice. Look elsewhere if you need Windows Store compatibility or cannot accept the risk that Olympus may fail.
