Overview

ExifTool is a Perl library and command-line application for reading and changing metadata across many file types. It suits developers and teams that need broad, scriptable metadata access across operating systems, especially where command-line or library workflows fit their stack. Its range is a strength; it is not a general-purpose image validator.

Key features

Wide metadata coverage: ExifTool handles formats including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3. That breadth makes it useful for mixed media collections, not just camera-image EXIF.
Camera maker notes: It supports manufacturer-specific notes from makers including Apple, Canon, DJI, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony, helping preserve access to details beyond common metadata fields.
Read, edit and transfer: The command-line application can inspect metadata, write or delete tag values, and copy or move metadata between files. Inputs can be file names, directories or standard input, supporting batch-oriented workflows without requiring a separate graphical interface.
Integration and deployment: The full Perl distribution includes documentation and API libraries; a C++ interface can communicate with an external ExifTool process. On Mac or Linux, the Perl distribution can run after extraction, and Windows offers an EXE version. Windows and macOS packages omit some files included in the full distribution, so teams needing the full API materials should choose the Perl distribution.
Original-file protection: Metadata writes preserve the original by adding _original to its filename by default. This gives a practical fallback, though teams should account for the extra files in automated workflows.
Format-aware writes: ExifTool does not write metadata when a target format cannot support that metadata type. That restraint avoids treating unsupported writes as successful, but the workflow must accommodate format-specific limits.

Pricing

ExifTool is free software, with the ExifTool plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid plan or free trial. Its Perl Artistic License permits embedding in commercial applications under stated conditions and does not require a donation, making it a viable option for commercial stacks that can meet those conditions.

Platforms

ExifTool is cross-platform, with Linux, macOS and Windows support, plus API and self-hosted availability. The command-line and library model fits teams comfortable integrating a developer tool rather than adopting a dedicated desktop editor.

Who it's for

ExifTool is a strong fit for developers, media pipelines and technical teams that need to inspect or alter varied metadata at scale, automate directory-based work, or integrate metadata handling into Perl or C++ applications. It is less suitable when the primary need is visual image-quality validation: its -validate feature offers extra checks mainly for JPEG and TIFF, but the tool is not designed as an image validator.

Pros and cons

Pro — unusually broad metadata scope: Coverage spans image, location, audio and other metadata formats, including maker notes from major camera manufacturers.
Pro — useful automation surface: File, directory and standard-input sources combine with tag editing and transfer operations for scriptable workflows.
Pro — commercial embedding is permitted: The license allows embedding under stated conditions without requiring a donation.
Con — security requires care: Some options can execute Perl code; applications passing file names should use -- or ensure names do not begin with a dash or Unicode minus sign. ExifTool also executes trusted-code-sensitive configuration from .ExifTool_config files in specified locations.
Con — not an image validator: Its limited extra validation checks are mainly for JPEG and TIFF, so teams needing general validation should choose a different tool for that job.
Con — package contents differ: Windows and macOS packages omit some files in the full Perl distribution, which matters if documentation and API libraries are part of the deployment requirement.

Alternatives

Photo Metadata Editors is the broader category list for comparing metadata tools. Choose an alternative when its platform or product form better matches the workflow:

FREE Browser is a free, open-source Android option for readers who want an Android-based alternative.
Exif Pilot has a free Basic EXIF editor plan and is Windows-only, making it an option for Windows users seeking that editor format.
ExifCleaner is a free desktop app for Linux, macOS and Windows, an alternative for readers seeking a desktop application.
GeoSetter is free and Windows-only, with no usage restrictions; consider it when Windows is the target platform.
Photini is free software under GPL-3.0-or-later for Linux, macOS and Windows users who prefer that licensing model.
EXIF Studio offers paid plans for macOS and Windows; its Month by Month plan costs 9.99 USD per month and includes full feature access, cancellation before the next tenure, free email support and 24 X 7 premium live support.
MetaImage is a paid macOS alternative for readers focused on that platform.
Photo Exifer is a paid option for iOS and macOS, with a free trial; consider it if those platforms are central to the workflow.

Verdict

Choose ExifTool when your team needs broad metadata coverage, command-line automation and integration options across a varied file collection, without a license fee. Its main trade-off is operational: it rewards careful handling of file names and configuration code, and it should not be relied on for general image validation.
