Overview

Express Burn covers a broad range of disc tasks, from audio CDs to bootable data discs and authored video DVDs and Blu-rays. Its mix of menu templates, multiple data formats, and automation makes it more capable than a basic disc writer. The trade-off is a tiered paid offering: the free edition stops at CDs, and the DVD and Blu-ray capabilities sit behind higher-priced plans.

The software comes from NCH Software, whose development team says it has released more than 80 applications since 1993. NCH provides troubleshooting and how-to articles, a forum, a help manual, and a technical-support contact option.

Key features

Audio projects can be written as MP3 or audio CDs from WAV, MP3, WMA, OGG, and FLAC files. That format range helps when source libraries are mixed, although it does not change the free edition's CD-only scope.

Video authoring supports DVDs and Blu-rays, chapter management, and PAL or NTSC output. DVD projects can use more than 20 menu templates, with custom images added to templates. Those options suit users who want structured video discs rather than just file storage; they are not a reason to choose the free edition, which cannot burn DVDs or Blu-rays.

Data discs can use ISO/Joliet, UDF, or Hybrid formats, and Express Burn can create and burn ISO images. It also supports bootable data discs, disc copying, recordable and rewritable media, and dual-layer DVD and Blu-ray burning. Command-line operation can help teams automate repeatable jobs or integrate burning with other programs, while it offers little advantage to someone burning a disc only occasionally.

NCH says the software is not for breaking copy-protected or region-protected media, and that its audio and video functions are intended for users' own content. NCH also says its programs may gather anonymous usage data, such as how often menus or options are used. Its site uses SSL to encrypt personal information in transit and says it does not store credit-card information.

Pricing

The free plan, Express Burn Free, costs 0.00 USD per free, does not expire, and is restricted to non-commercial use and CD burning. It is adequate for occasional personal CD projects, but not for commercial work or users who need DVD, Blu-ray, or video authoring.

Paid plans are annual: Express Burn Plus CD Burner Annual Plan costs 34.99 USD per year for audio and data CD burning; Express Burn Plus CD + DVD Authoring Annual Plan costs 49.99 USD per year for CD and DVD recording; and Express Burn Plus CD + DVD + Blu-ray Authoring Annual Plan costs 59.95 USD per year for all supported disc types. The CD plan is the lower-cost choice for users who need paid CD work without DVD authoring. The DVD plan adds DVD recording, while the top tier is the fit for Blu-ray projects and the full supported disc range. No seat or usage quota is stated for these plans.

Express Burn is a freemium product with a free trial, but no trial duration is given. The free edition itself has no expiry; its key limits are non-commercial use and CD-only burning.

Platforms

Express Burn runs on Windows and macOS. That cross-platform support is useful for teams working across those desktop systems, though the software is not presented for Linux.

Who it's for

Choose Express Burn if you need local disc authoring and burning across audio, video, and data workflows, particularly where ISO images, bootable discs, command-line operation, or Blu-ray support matter. It is less compelling for a user who only needs basic occasional CD burning, since the free edition is limited to non-commercial use, or for a Linux-based workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad media support, including audio CDs, authored DVD and Blu-ray projects, and several data-disc formats, makes it suitable for mixed disc workloads.
Pros: ISO creation and burning, bootable discs, and command-line operation give technically oriented users useful workflow options beyond a simple burn interface.
Pros: A non-expiring free edition provides a no-cost path to non-commercial CD burning.
Cons: The free edition cannot burn DVDs or Blu-rays, so those workflows require an annual paid plan.
Cons: The free edition is not for commercial use, limiting its fit for business CD projects.
Cons: Linux is not supported, which rules it out for teams that need a Linux desktop application.

Alternatives

For broader ISO-focused options, browse ISO Creation Software. Consider InfraRecorder if you need free CD/DVD burning on Windows and can accept its beta status. AnyBurn is a stronger fit when free personal and business use, audio CD ripping, image-file tools, or bootable USB creation are priorities. BurnAware may suit a Windows user seeking a free personal-use option for data, audio, and video discs and ISO images, while its free tier has stated feature and Windows 32-bit limits.

Disc Studio is another free Windows option for personal and commercial use, with no ads, account, or trial clock. Choose ImgBurn if a free Windows disc-burning application is the main requirement, or ISO Master if you want a graphical ISO image editor for Linux or BSD. Alcohol 52% is a Windows alternative with a free edition and a 15-day trial. PhotoDirector is a freemium macOS and Windows alternative.

Verdict

Express Burn is a sound choice for Windows or macOS users who need authored video discs, ISO workflows, and multiple media types in one desktop tool. Its main advantage is the breadth from audio CDs through Blu-ray and automation; its main drawback is that the free edition is restricted to non-commercial CDs, with DVD and Blu-ray work requiring annual payment. Choose it when those paid disc workflows are central; look elsewhere if you need Linux support or a more permissive free tier.
