Overview

Outwrite pairs error correction with style suggestions and real-time readability and grade-level statistics. That broader editing focus makes it more useful for revising prose than for writers who only need a basic proofreader. Its Rewrite feature proposes alternate sentence wording for fluency and variety, while Pro and Teams add a bounded plagiarism allowance for checking against publicly available internet text.

The free plan supplies spelling and grammar checks, a thesaurus and access through the web app, browser extensions, Google Docs and Microsoft Word. It omits the style improvements, structural suggestions and sentence rewriting that distinguish the paid offer, so the main reason to upgrade is editorial guidance rather than routine correction.

Key features

Spelling and grammar: Finds misspellings and grammatically incorrect phrases. This is the practical core for routine proofreading, and it is included in the free plan.
Style and structure: Paid plans add style improvements and structural suggestions. These are more relevant to writers revising flow and organization than to users who only want errors flagged.
Sentence rewriting: Rewrite offers different ways to phrase a sentence for fluency and variety. It gives Pro users a direct revision aid, but is not part of the free tier.
Readability statistics: Real-time readability and grade-level measures help writers gauge how accessible a passage is, particularly when the intended reading level matters.
Plagiarism checks: Pro and Teams include 50 checks per month against publicly available internet text. That is useful for occasional screening, but the monthly cap makes it a poor fit for high-volume checking.
Languages: Outwrite supports English in US, UK, Australian, New Zealand and South African variants, as well as French and Spanish. Seven language options broaden its use, though it is not a multilingual editor beyond those supported variants and languages.

Pricing

Outwrite uses a freemium model and offers a free trial. The free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and includes spelling and grammar, thesaurus, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, browser extensions and the web app. It is a sensible starting point for correction, but it does not include the paid style, structural or rewrite tools.

Pro — 9.95 USD per month: Billed US$9.95/month, Pro adds style improvements, structural suggestions, sentence rewriting, 50 plagiarism checks per month and priority email support. It suits individual writers who will use the deeper editing tools; the finite plagiarism quota is worth bearing in mind for frequent screening.
Teams — 7.95 USD per month: Billed US$7.95/user/month for groups of three or more. Teams includes 50 plagiarism checks per month, a group discount, team-access management, consolidated billing, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, browser extensions and the web app. Its per-user price is lower than Pro's stated monthly rate, but the minimum group size means it is not an individual alternative.

Platforms

Outwrite works through a web app, browser extensions and an API, and its platform availability also includes macOS and Windows. It has no desktop or mobile app. Online integrations include Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Gmail, LinkedIn and WordPress, which makes it more suitable for people working in connected writing tools than for those expecting a standalone native editor. The Word add-in supports Word 2016 or later on Windows, Word on Mac and Windows Microsoft 365, and Word on the web.

The API requires an API key on every request and operates only over HTTPS. Outwrite says it uses industry-standard encryption in transit, along with firewalls, password access and secure servers. Users can request deletion of User Data, but text snippets used by its AI platform continue to be retained; teams handling sensitive writing should weigh that retention before adopting it.

Who it's for

Outwrite suits students, professionals, casual writers and teams who want corrections plus help improving prose, especially when they work in supported online documents and services. Pro is the more fitting choice for an individual who needs rewriting or structural suggestions. Teams is designed for groups of at least three that want shared access management and consolidated billing. Writers who need a mobile app, a desktop app, or more than 50 monthly plagiarism checks should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Style improvements, structural suggestions and sentence rewriting extend the product beyond basic proofreading.
Pro: Real-time readability and grade-level statistics give writers a practical way to assess accessibility while editing.
Pro: The free tier covers core correction and access to major online writing destinations, including Google Docs and Microsoft Word.
Con: The free plan excludes the central style and rewriting tools, limiting it to correction and thesaurus use.
Con: Pro and Teams cap plagiarism checking at 50 per month, which may constrain frequent review workflows.
Con: There is no desktop or mobile app, and retained AI text snippets may be a concern for sensitive material.

Verdict

Choose Outwrite if you want a free proofreading entry point and are prepared to pay for sentence rewrites, structural suggestions and style feedback in the tools where you already write. Its main strength is that combination of editorial guidance and readability measures; look elsewhere if native desktop or mobile apps, higher-volume plagiarism checks or avoiding retained AI text snippets are priorities.
