Overview

Fastly Image Optimizer is a cloud service that transforms and delivers images through Fastly’s edge network. It is best suited to teams with image-heavy sites or apps that need flexible image variants while retaining their existing sources and asset workflows.

Its strongest case is request-time processing with cached delivery; the trade-off is a request-based meter that makes volume central to the cost decision.

Key features

Image Optimizer can resize, crop or trim, adjust quality, change orientation and convert formats when an image is requested. Developers control these choices through query parameters and configuration, avoiding the need to generate and store a separate asset for every placement. That flexibility is useful for sites with varied image dimensions, but less compelling if a team already relies on fixed, pre-generated variants.

Processed images are cached and reused, allowing subsequent requests to be served with minimal latency. Supported output formats are WebP, AVIF, JPEG and PNG. Configurable defaults cover WebP and JPEG quality, resizing filters, upscaling, animated GIF-to-video handling and processed file types, giving teams control over common processing behavior.

The service integrates with existing asset pipelines and CMS platforms, so teams can continue using their current image sources. It can be enabled through the Fastly control panel or API. Compute SDK access is available through a beta program; teams should include SDK traffic in their estimates because every request sent to Image Optimizer counts as a billable image request.

Fastly states that it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, audited against SOC 2 Type 2 and key GDPR requirements, PCI DSS Level 1 compliant, and audited against relevant HIPAA sections. Those credentials may matter to teams evaluating compliance requirements, though they do not change the request-metered economics.

Pricing

Fastly offers a free tier of 0.00 USD per free for 100,000 image requests per month. It gives teams a bounded way to assess the service, but the allowance is small relative to high-traffic production workloads, and SDK requests count toward it.

Paid usage is priced per 10,000 Image Requests per month, with rates that fall as monthly volume rises: 0.50 USD per month for 100,000–10 Million image requests; 0.15 USD per month for 10 Million–50 Million; 0.07 USD per month for 50 Million–150 Million; 0.03 USD per month for 150 Million–500 Million; 0.02 USD per month for 500 Million–1 Billion; 0.02 USD per month for 1 Billion–5 Billion; and 0.01 USD per month beyond 5 Billion. The tiers make the per-unit rate more favorable at scale, but the request count—not only end-user page views—needs to be part of a forecast.

Fastly also gives a paid-from figure of 1500 /mo. Teams should treat this alongside the request tiers when budgeting rather than assuming the free quota will cover sustained use. There are no seat or renewal terms to weigh in the supplied plan terms.

Platforms

Image Optimizer is a cloud deployment available through API, Linux and web. Fastly lists API access and request processing, with deployment through the Fastly CLI, control panel, GitHub Actions, Terraform and APIs. The broader platform also lists Rust, JavaScript, Go, C++, Python and other WASI-supporting runtimes for edge compute. These options suit teams already operating within Fastly’s delivery and deployment workflows.

Who it's for

Fastly positions its global edge network for high-throughput image delivery across media sites, ecommerce platforms and SaaS applications. It is a stronger fit when those teams want on-demand variants, caching and integration with their existing asset pipeline than when they need a standalone compression utility or a fixed local image-processing workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Request-time transformations avoid maintaining a separate stored variant for each size or format.
Pros: Cached reuse and support for WebP, AVIF, JPEG and PNG combine delivery efficiency with common output choices.
Pros: Existing asset sources can remain in place, with control-panel, API and deployment-tool access for integration.
Cons: Every Image Optimizer request, including SDK requests, is billable, so usage forecasting must account for request volume.
Cons: The free monthly allowance is limited to 100,000 image requests, making it a modest fit for production at scale.
Cons: Compute SDK access is through a beta program, which may not suit teams seeking a non-beta SDK path.

Alternatives

For broader image-compression options, compare the Image Compression Software category. Teams choosing infrastructure around edge delivery can also review CDN Software; those evaluating adjacent security needs can browse Web Application Firewall Software and DDoS Protection Software.

Pick Gcore WAAP instead if a freemium web/API protection service is the priority: its free plan includes one domain, 0.5M requests, default rules and no IP Firewall rules, with €2/1M quota overage; its Start plan is 25.00 EUR per month for five domains and 1M requests.

Wallarm API Security is another option when API security is the focus: its free tier allows up to 500,000 requests per month and three users per company, while excluding vulnerability assessment and API Abuse Prevention.

BunkerWeb is the alternative to consider for an open-source option under an AGPLv3 license. For secret management, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Secret Management provides a free plan with 5,000 secrets per tenancy and 30 active secret versions per secret.

F5 BIG-IP APM, AWS WAF, Imperva API Security and Radware Alteon are additional products readers can compare for their respective deployment and security needs.

Verdict

Choose Fastly Image Optimizer if your image-heavy site or app needs request-time variants, cached edge delivery and integration with existing sources. Its main advantage is reducing variant-management work without changing the asset workflow; its main drawback is that every image request is billable, so the free allowance and per-request tiers demand careful volume planning. Look elsewhere if your workload does not need dynamic edge transformations or if request-based billing is a poor fit.
