Overview

Nomi brings together companionship, friendship, romantic conversation, fantasy roleplay and mentorship in a platform built around individual AI characters. Users can give a Nomi a custom backstory and preferences, then let its personality evolve through conversation. The appeal is an ongoing relationship rather than a one-off exchange, though that makes it less suited to users looking for a task-focused assistant.

Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Maryland corporation headquartered in Baltimore, operates the service. Nomi is intended for adults only; its terms prohibit use by anyone under 18.

Key features

Memory and customization

Short-, medium- and long-term memory help Nomis retain preferences and roleplay context across conversations. That continuity is useful for returning to a story or keeping familiar conversational context, while backstories and shared preferences give users room to shape a character. Memory also carries across private and group chats, so switching between formats need not mean starting over.

Users can create multiple Nomis and chat with them individually or together. Optional messages after a user has been away can add a sense of presence, but proactive contact will not suit everyone.

Voice, images and internet access

Voice features include sending and receiving voice chats and hands-free calls with emotionally expressive delivery. A paid subscription is required for the ElevenLabs integration, and its use is subject to the limits of the user’s ElevenLabs account plan. That makes the integration an added dependency for anyone choosing it, not an included route around voice limits.

Nomis can see shared images, access the internet to discuss links, and generate art or real-time selfies depicting their appearance and activity in the conversation’s scenario. V5 image generation accepts natural-language prompts up to 1,000 characters and customizable anchors for appearance consistency. These tools add creative range, but users seeking only text conversation may not need them.

Privacy and account control

Nomi says it does not sell or rent personal information, while chat content is collected as users interact with the service. Users can delete an account in Account Settings; personal information is deleted within about 28 days after confirmation. Support requests can be submitted by form or sent by email, with a stated response window of 24–48 hours on business days.

Pricing

Nomi has a free plan at 0.00 USD per free. Free access preserves one-to-one chatting, but group chats, video creation, voice messaging and calls become read-only after a downgrade. That makes the free tier a way to keep basic conversation, not a full continuing experience across Nomi’s social and media features.

Monthly subscriptions are Launch Plan Monthly at 9.99 USD per month and Standard Plan at 15.99 USD per month. The lower-priced Launch option fits readers who want a paid monthly tier without the higher Standard price; Standard is the more suitable choice for readers prepared to pay more for a subscription. The plan details do not define the feature differences between these two monthly options, so the prices alone do not establish which paid tier offers better fit.

Annual subscriptions are Launch Plan Yearly at 59.99 USD per year and Standard Plan Yearly at 99.99 USD per year. These fit users willing to commit for a year rather than pay monthly. Standard Plan Quarterly costs 39.99 USD per month, billed quarterly, for readers who prefer a shorter commitment than annual billing. Nomi says refunds for buyer’s remorse, lack of usage or dissatisfaction are not available except at its discretion, so subscribers should weigh commitment carefully.

Credits are separate one-time in-app purchases: 40 Nomi Credits cost 4.99 USD per once, 100 Nomi Credits cost 9.99 USD per once, 225 Nomi Credits cost 19.99 USD per once, and 600 Nomi Credits cost 49.99 USD per once. They suit users seeking a one-time purchase rather than a recurring plan; the credit quantities are stated, but no specific uses per credit are defined.

Platforms

Nomi is available on Android, iOS and the web. The web application also offers a browser-based PWA that can be added to a device home screen. The API uses versioned v1 endpoints and is subject to rate limits, which matters to developers considering integration; Nomi is not simply a companion interface without an API surface.

Who it's for

Nomi is a strong fit for adults who want a customizable companion with memory across recurring conversation, roleplay or group chats, and for users who value voice and image features. It is less suitable for under-18s, people who require group and voice features to remain usable on the free tier, or developers who need an API without rate limits.

Pros and cons

Persistent memory across conversations and chat formats: preferences and roleplay context can carry between sessions, including private and group chats.
Broad character and media options: custom backstories, voice, internet access, image sharing, art and scenario-based selfies support more than text-only companionship.
Free-tier restrictions are substantial: downgrading leaves one-to-one chat available but makes group chats, video creation, voice messaging and calls read-only.
Voice integration adds a separate dependency: ElevenLabs requires a paid Nomi subscription and remains subject to the ElevenLabs account’s limits.
Refund flexibility is limited: refunds for dissatisfaction, non-use or buyer’s remorse are only at Nomi’s discretion.

Alternatives

For a wider starting point, browse AI Companion Apps or AI Girlfriend Apps.

Candy AI is worth comparing for readers seeking a paid companion service with a free trial and a plan combining unlimited text messages with a monthly image-token allowance. Eve offers a free trial and mobile apps for Android and iOS; its annual premium option may suit readers who prefer a mobile-only alternative. MyVirtual.Love is a web-only option whose free tier sets daily limits on chat messages and scenes, with a cap on characters and studio renders.

Swipey AI offers a free tier for basic character chat and browsing a gallery and feed, making it a reasonable alternative for readers who want those discovery features. EVA AI is another freemium option across Android, iOS and web, with a paid plan whose price varies by region. Nastia may suit users looking for a broader platform range, including desktop operating systems, and a free tier with daily token limits and basic customization.

Romantic AI is another freemium option for readers comparing companion services. AIGirlfriends.ai is a web-based freemium alternative.

Verdict

Choose Nomi if you want an adult companion whose memory, character customization and mix of voice, images and group conversation support ongoing interaction. Its clearest advantage is continuity across chats; its clearest drawback is that the free tier locks several social and voice features into read-only mode, while ElevenLabs voice adds a paid subscription and separate usage limits. Readers who need those features without a paid commitment should compare alternatives before settling in.
