Overview

Filestash combines file sharing, document management, managed file transfer, and archiving around storage you already use. Its browser interface can connect to services ranging from SFTP and SMB to cloud drives, while gateways can make that storage accessible to other clients. That breadth can consolidate disparate access points, but the product asks more of an operator than a standalone desktop client.

Self-hosting is a practical option: the installation guide calls for a Linux server, Docker, Docker Compose, and curl, and says 128 MB of RAM and one CPU core suffice except for intensive video transcoding or thousands of simultaneous users. Those modest baseline resources help, though deployment and ongoing administration still suit a team comfortable running infrastructure.

Key features

One interface, many storage systems

Filestash connects to FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB, S3, NFS, Git, SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Storj. Users can browse, organize, share, and synchronize folders across connections, edit files remotely, and authenticate with SSH keys. This is useful when teams need a common working surface without moving data into a new repository.

It can also expose underlying storage through SFTP, MCP, FTP, WebDAV, S3, or AS2 gateways. That makes Filestash relevant to transfer workflows beyond its own browser UI, though it also means the platform is a broader infrastructure component rather than just a file picker.

Controls, automation, and AI

An event-driven workflow engine chains actions and can be extended with plugins; scripting is also supported for automation. LDAP, SAML, and OIDC SSO, along with role-based access control, give organizations tools to align access with their existing identity setup. Immutable, timestamped audit logs are described as supporting GDPR compliance, and the plugin catalog includes FIPS-compliant ciphers, activity detection, IP blocking, and ClamAV scanning.

Semantic search, smart folders, and OCR are among the listed AI features, including support for local models through Ollama. These capabilities broaden the product’s reach, but the available feature set does not establish how they perform against a particular organization’s data or workflows.

Pricing

Filestash uses a freemium model. Hobby supports up to three users and suits an individual or small group that can work within that cap.

Self Served costs 50.00 USD per month on a monthly subscription. It includes three seats, a commercial license, cloud or self-hosted deployment, SSO with SAML, OIDC, or LDAP, RBAC, and a single-node deployment. The seat cap is a meaningful constraint for a growing team; its monthly term and deployment choice suit organizations that want commercial use without an enterprise-scale footprint.

Enterprise Solutions costs 290.00 USD per month on a monthly subscription. It adds unlimited users, audit and compliance features, whitelabeling, 24/7 support, and high availability. This is the clearer fit for organizations with scale or continuity requirements, while smaller teams may not need its additional scope. A Pro plan is also named, with custom pricing.

A free trial is offered. For organizations that need implementation or operational help, support includes developer technical support, security patches before public disclosure, deployment options, hardening help, plugins, and consulting services.

Platforms

Filestash supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and also lists API and self-hosted availability. Its broad platform reach pairs with support for SFTP, FTP, FTPS, WebDAV, SMB, S3, NFS, MCP, and AS2, which should matter more to teams integrating existing systems than to users seeking only a local file browser.

Who it's for

Filestash is a strong candidate for teams that need to unify access to multiple storage backends, expose them through standard gateways, or add identity and audit controls around file workflows. Its self-hosted option and low stated baseline requirements can suit infrastructure-minded teams. It is less compelling for an individual who needs only a basic transfer client, or for a team that cannot accommodate deployment and administration work.

Pros and cons

Pros: Many storage connections and gateway protocols can bring varied systems behind one interface, reducing the need to treat each as a separate workspace.
Pros: SSO, RBAC, audit capabilities, and security-focused plugins address organizational access and governance needs.
Pros: Self-hosting has modest stated baseline resource requirements, and folder sync, remote editing, and workflow automation cover more than browsing alone.
Cons: Self Served includes only three seats, so teams that outgrow that limit must consider the substantially broader Enterprise tier.
Cons: The deployment prerequisites and self-hosting responsibilities make it a less direct choice than a conventional desktop client for basic transfers.
Cons: The Hobby user cap is clear, but its price is not, which complicates comparison for cost-sensitive small groups.

Alternatives

For a dedicated SFTP server with paid editions, consider VShell Server: its Workgroup Edition is 599.00 USD per once with one year of updates and 25 concurrent connections, while its Enterprise Edition is 999.00 USD. For a free Windows transfer client, WinSCP supports SFTP, FTP, FTPS, SCP, WebDAV, and S3; it is a narrower choice than Filestash’s multi-platform, self-hosted access layer.

Cyberduck is another freemium alternative. For a free client across Linux, macOS, and Windows, FileZilla Client supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP. CrossFTP is a freemium alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

ExpanDrive offers a free personal-use plan for up to 10 users or devices per year, with 15 cloud services and protocols and community support. Linux users looking for free GPL software can consider lftp. For a Windows freemium alternative, Xftp has a free license for personal, home, and educational non-commercial use.

Verdict

Choose Filestash when your team needs one access layer across varied storage, plus gateways, workflows, and organization-level controls. Its range and self-hosting flexibility are the central reasons to adopt it; choose a simpler transfer client instead if those capabilities would add administration without solving a real integration problem.
