Overview

MailEditor combines drag-and-drop design with the ability to upload an existing HTML email and edit it visually. Reusable modules and custom fonts support repeatable layouts, while custom code editing leaves room for developers to refine the result. That makes it more flexible than a visual-only workflow, though exported images remain hosted online rather than bundled with the HTML.

Users can download or copy HTML, or save templates in their MailEditor account for later reuse. The Gmail add-on provides access to the template library from Gmail, while integrations support export to services including Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign, SendGrid, Brevo, HubSpot, Outlook Web and Salesforce Pardot. The embedded JavaScript plugin is the more relevant route for product teams that want an editor inside their own application: it can edit HTML and CSS and return updated code.

Key features

Reusable design and AI drafts

Pre-built modules help teams assemble recurring email layouts rather than starting each message from scratch. MailEditor also offers editable template drafts from a design prompt. The quota is two on Free, ten on Starter, 30 on Team and 50 on Agency, so it is a modest source of draft variations rather than an unlimited generation workflow.

Export, integrations and data handling

Export can mean downloading or copying HTML, or sending a template through a supported email-platform integration. The distinction matters: the plans cap HTML and ESP exports separately, and the HTML output relies on online-hosted images. Teams that require locally bundled assets should look elsewhere.

MailEditor says browser traffic and third-party connections use TLS 1.2 or higher, with databases and file storage encrypted at rest using AES-256. Templates are private by default and are its only stored customer content; it says it does not store subscriber lists or contact profiles from connected platforms. Stripe handles payments, and MailEditor says it does not keep card numbers or payment credentials on its servers.

Pricing

The free plan is labeled Free (Forever) and billed at $0 yearly. It includes two members, 10 HTML exports, five ESP exports, 40 test emails, 20 saved templates, 300 MB of storage and two AI templates. That is enough room to evaluate a small workflow, but the export quotas are restrictive for recurring campaign production. The plan also has no premium-template allowance shown.

Starter costs 9.00 USD per month, billed yearly. It raises the allowance to two members, 100 HTML exports, 50 ESP exports, 200 test emails, 60 saved templates, 700 MB, 10 AI templates, 30 premium templates and five workspaces. It is the practical entry point for a small team with steady but limited export needs; the yearly billing term and separate export ceilings matter if volume is unpredictable.

Team costs 29.00 USD per month, billed yearly, for seven members, 600 HTML exports, 300 ESP exports, 700 test emails, 400 saved templates, 1500 MB, 30 AI templates, 100 premium templates and 20 workspaces. It fits a growing team with several active email workflows, although both export types remain capped.

Agency costs 59.00 USD per month, billed yearly. Its 30 members, unlimited HTML and ESP exports, unlimited test emails, saved templates and storage make it the clearest fit for agencies or larger production teams with substantial throughput. It still caps AI templates at 50 and premium templates at 900. The tiers list their billing as yearly, so the monthly figure should not be mistaken for a month-to-month term.

Platforms

MailEditor is available on web, as an API and as an extension. Its Gmail add-on is useful for inserting stored templates from Gmail, while the API and embeddable plugin address teams integrating email editing into a product or application.

Who it's for

MailEditor suits teams that need to revise existing HTML as well as assemble new emails visually, especially when they reuse modules and export to connected email services. Developers can benefit from code editing, the API and the embeddable plugin. It is less compelling for teams that need self-contained image assets, substantial export volume on a low tier, or more than 50 AI-generated drafts at Agency level.

Pros and cons

Pro: Visual editing and custom code coexist, so teams can build layouts without giving up HTML control.
Pro: Separate HTML and ESP export quotas clarify how much each workflow can handle at each tier.
Pro: Gmail access, platform integrations and an embeddable editor serve both campaign users and product teams.
Con: Free provides only 10 HTML and five ESP exports, limiting its usefulness beyond evaluation or occasional work.
Con: Exported images remain online-hosted, which rules out a self-contained HTML package.
Con: Starter, Team and Agency prices are billed yearly, while paid tiers still cap AI templates.

Alternatives

Pick Dragble if self-hosting is important: it offers API, self-hosted and web platforms, a free plan and a free trial, with its Free plan including three projects, 10 GB storage and 10 core content blocks. Consider Postcards for a free plan with unlimited teammates; its Start tier includes 10 template projects, five monthly exports and 10 daily test emails, but no monthly AI credits.

Stripo is another freemium web and API option, with a Free tier that includes two members, four monthly exports, five daily test emails and 10 stored emails. Choose Unlayer if a free email, page, popup and document builder better matches the product need; its platform options include self-hosting and it offers a free trial.

For a self-hosted option with HTML/CSS export and a free Starter tier, consider GrapesJS Studio SDK Email Editor, which includes 100 AI credits per month, 0.1 GB cloud space and unlimited drag-and-drop edits. MJML is the open-source MIT-licensed choice, with a free-to-use REST API, for readers prioritizing an open-source tool.

Choose Unitpost if the job is email delivery rather than template editing: its free plan includes 5,000 emails per month, 200 per day, 10,000 contacts, five domains, two webhook endpoints and 25 MB hosted image storage. MailDeveloper is a paid alternative with a free trial; its Freelancer plan is 59.99 USD per month for 150 active emails, one user, standard support and export-ready HTML.

Browse Email Design Software or Email Template Software for more options in those categories.

Verdict

MailEditor is a strong fit for small teams and developers who want visual email editing without losing the ability to work with HTML, reuse templates and export to common platforms. The main reason to choose it is that combination of editor, code access and integration routes; the main reason to look elsewhere is the reliance on online-hosted images and the low export ceilings below Agency. Starter is a reasonable entry for modest recurring work, while teams with high volume should weigh the yearly Agency commitment against their needs.
