Overview

Rather than limiting itself to files or installed apps, Fluent Search combines many kinds of lookup in one place and adds keyboard navigation of on-screen controls. That breadth makes it a useful candidate for people who want a single starting point for everyday desktop tasks. If you need a narrowly focused file finder, or a conventional desktop replacement rather than a launcher, its wider approach may be more than you need.

Key features

Search and indexing

Search Apps covers installed apps, files, browser history and bookmarks, commands, web searches, open windows, settings, calculations, and on-screen UI elements. The range is a practical strength for users who regularly move between different kinds of lookup; it also means the tool’s value depends on whether you want that range rather than just basic app launching.

The built-in file indexer is designed to scan quickly while keeping CPU use low. By default, it stores file metadata rather than file contents; content indexing can be enabled for selected paths. This gives users a narrower default indexing scope, while searching inside file contents requires opting in for the locations where that is needed.

Screen navigation, plugins, and web search

Screen Search overlays character labels on clickable screen elements, allowing keyboard navigation and interaction without relying on point-and-click for each target. That makes Fluent Search more than a launcher for users who want keyboard control across the desktop, though it is less relevant if you only need to find apps and files.

Community plugins can add search sources, previews, actions, and YAML-based task workflows. This extendability can help adapt the tool to varied workflows, but teams relying on third-party plugins should account for the fact that plugins may involve external communication.

The Web Search App supports configurable engines including Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo, inline page previews, and sending prompts to ChatGPT. Optional semantic search and summarization run locally and can be disabled in Settings, giving users a way to use those capabilities without making them mandatory.

Privacy and data flows

The maker says searches, file indexes, browser data, and most interactions are processed locally, and that local files, search queries, and searched content are not uploaded. That local-first approach is a meaningful fit for users who prefer on-device processing. Depending on settings, however, crash diagnostics, web suggestions, Microsoft To Do, OneDrive settings sync, and third-party plugins may communicate externally. Teams with strict data-handling requirements should review those settings and integrations before relying on Fluent Search.

Pricing

Fluent Search: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is for Windows 10 or 11 and includes x64 and ARM64 builds. There is no paid tier or seat limit specified for this plan, so it is a straightforward option for individuals and teams evaluating a keyboard-driven launcher without a software charge.

Platforms

Fluent Search is available for Windows, with x64 and ARM64 installer, APPX, and portable builds, as well as installation through the Microsoft Store. The maker describes the ARM64 build as newer and not yet battle-tested, so x64 is the more established fit for users who want to avoid that caveat. Support and community channels include GitHub, Discord, and support@fluentsearch.net.

Who it's for

Fluent Search is best suited to Windows users who want keyboard-first access to a wide set of desktop resources and value customization through plugins. Its screen navigation and optional local semantic search make it a more distinctive choice than a basic app launcher. It is less suitable for users who need a tested ARM64 experience, want only a focused file search utility, or cannot accommodate configurable integrations that may communicate externally.

Pros and cons

Pro: Search Apps spans apps, files, browser data, commands, settings, calculations, and screen elements, reducing the need to switch between separate lookup tools.
Pro: Screen Search enables keyboard interaction with clickable screen elements, extending the keyboard-first workflow beyond launching and searching.
Pro: The index stores metadata by default, while content indexing is opt-in for selected paths.
Con: ARM64 is described as newer and not yet battle-tested, which may be a concern for users who need a mature ARM build.
Con: Some settings and integrations, including diagnostics, web suggestions, sync, and third-party plugins, may involve external communication.

Open-Shell Menu is a free collection of utilities for bringing classic features back to Windows, so it suits readers seeking that kind of restoration rather than broad search.
Parkdale is free to download and use and supports Android, macOS, and Windows; its stated facts do not indicate a search or launcher focus.

Verdict

Choose Fluent Search if you want a free Windows launcher that combines broad search with keyboard navigation of screen controls and room to extend workflows through plugins. Its main advantage is the range of tasks it brings into one keyboard-driven tool; look elsewhere if a mature ARM64 build or fewer potential external data flows is essential to your setup.
