Overview

Folder Size is a Windows disk-usage analyzer for people who need to find what is consuming space across folders, drives, and network storage. It suits home users and teams who want reports and file-management tools alongside their scans, but command-line automation requires the Professional license.

Key features

Folder Size scans local and external drives, USB and flash drives, SD cards, NAS, SAN, and network shares, then presents usage in bar and pie charts. A File Explorer right-click menu lets you scan a folder and its subfolders directly, which is useful for investigating a particular location without starting from a full-drive scan.

Reports cover largest, oldest, newest, empty, and longest-path items, with export to Excel, CSV, or XML. Saved scan data can be reloaded to compare results over time. You can also cut, copy, paste, delete, and move files and folders in the application, making it more than a read-only usage viewer. The tradeoff is that symbolic links cannot be scanned.

The maker says scans stay local: folder sizes, file names, and other scan data are not uploaded or transmitted. Command-line scanning and export automation are reserved for Professional, so teams looking to script recurring analysis need the higher tier. Folder Size also supports file previews, automatic selection, Recycle Bin handling, and folder exclusions.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes folder and file size analysis, disk-usage charts, and local and external drive scanning. It is a practical starting point for manual analysis, but does not include the Professional-only command-line automation and advanced reporting and export.

Personal costs 24.95 USD per month, billed as a one-time fee, for a feature-limited lifetime license, registered-user support, and minor version updates. It fits an individual who wants a paid license without automation; the listed price is a one-time payment, not a recurring monthly charge.

Professional costs 39.95 USD per month, also billed as a one-time fee, and adds command-line automation, advanced reporting and export, a Professional lifetime license, support, and minor version updates. It is the relevant choice for scripted workflows. Corporate costs 499.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time fee, for use on unlimited computers within a company or organization. All three paid plans are described as licenses that never expire. There is no free trial.

Platforms

Folder Size runs on Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, and Windows Server 2008 or newer. The stated minimum requirements are 1 GB of RAM and 10 MB of disk space. It scans an unusually broad range of storage locations, including network computers and drives, but is not a cross-platform option.

Who it's for

Home users, gamers, photographers, video editors, developers, IT professionals, and businesses can use Folder Size to locate large or otherwise notable files and review storage across connected sources. It is strongest for Windows users who value graphical analysis, exportable reports, and in-app file operations. Look elsewhere if you need to scan symbolic links or run automated scans without buying Professional.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scans local, removable, and network storage, including NAS and SAN, so analysis can extend beyond a PC's internal drives.
Pros: Charts, targeted reports, export formats, and saved scan comparisons support both quick cleanup and ongoing storage reviews.
Pros: Local-only scanning and built-in file operations keep analysis and cleanup within the Windows application.
Cons: Command-line automation is limited to Professional, a meaningful constraint for teams building repeatable workflows.
Cons: Symbolic links are not scanned, and Windows is the only supported platform.

Alternatives

For adjacent options, browse Disk Space Analyzers or Duplicate File Finders. If duplicate-file matching is the priority rather than broad storage analysis, dupeGuru is free and runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows; AllDup is a free Windows option for private users and companies. CloneSpy is another free Windows duplicate-file cleanup tool.

jdupes is free, MIT-licensed, and focuses on exact duplicate matching; Czkawka is free, has no ads, and supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Duplicate Cleaner offers a free basic edition for personal and home use, plus a free trial; its free edition is not for commercial use. Duplicate Files Fixer scans unlimited files in its free version but limits removal to 15 duplicates at once, then one at a time. Auslogics Driver Updater is a Windows freemium tool whose free plan updates one driver at a time; choose it for driver updates rather than disk-usage analysis.

Verdict

Folder Size is a strong fit for Windows users who need a visual account of storage across local, removable, and network locations, with reports and file management in the same application. Choose it for that combination and the one-time lifetime licenses; look elsewhere if cross-platform support, symbolic-link scanning, or command-line automation without the Professional purchase is essential.
