Overview

Forio brings together ready-made business simulations, a platform for building learning experiences, and custom development. It is a strong fit for educators and learning teams that want interactive practice, especially when a simulation needs to reflect their own models or teaching goals. The trade-off is a broad menu of offerings with distinct pricing and deployment limits.

Founded in 2001 and based in Burlingame, California, Forio focuses on strategy scenarios. Its offerings support multiplayer learning, assessment, instructor dashboards, advanced customization, and hybrid deployment.

Key features

Build and connect with Epicenter

Epicenter combines model-driven interfaces, cohort management, and secure deployment. It supports Python, R, and Julia models as well as Vensim and Stella, with Flow.js, Epicenter.js, and REST APIs for connecting models and applications. This breadth gives technical teams room to use established modeling tools; teams seeking a ready-to-run exercise may find the platform-building route unnecessary.

Teams can connect LLMs and AI libraries through Python or APIs. Epicenter describes OAuth 2.0 security and role-based project access, and supports cloud or on-premises deployment. Customers can host a project's user interface on their own web server while relying on Epicenter APIs. That hybrid approach can suit organizations with hosting requirements, though authenticated-project and user allowances vary by plan.

Ready-made, custom, and role-play learning

Ready-Made Simulations cover business topics and support individual, team-based, and asynchronous formats. They offer a quicker route to a team-based business exercise than commissioning a bespoke simulation, but the stated immediate-access library is not the same as a fully tailored scenario.

Forio also develops simulations with customers, who own the resulting intellectual property. That is a meaningful option when a learning objective calls for a purpose-built experience, but it comes with custom pricing. Performer focuses on branded role-play, with scoring criteria, facilitator dashboards, and AI feedback for select exercises; it is a more specialized choice than Epicenter's model-building platform.

Pricing

Forio's freemium model ranges from a free development tier to annual platform subscriptions, per-seat simulation access, and custom-priced enterprise or development work. The distinction that matters most is whether learners need authenticated access: Epicenter Personal allows projects but no end-user authentication or authenticated projects.

Plan	Price and terms	What it includes and who it suits
Epicenter Personal	0.00 USD per free	Unlimited public and private projects, but 0 end-user authentication and 0 authenticated projects. Suitable for exploring or developing projects, not for serving authenticated learners.
Ready-Made Simulations	Starting at $168 per seat; annual licenses available for 100+ seats	Immediate access to the team-based business simulation library. A direct fit for teams that want an existing exercise rather than simulation-building tools.
Epicenter Professional	$1,970/year	200 end-user authentication and 5 authenticated projects, for smaller deployments with several learner-facing projects.
Epicenter Business	$4,770/year	1,000 end-user authentication and 10 authenticated projects, for broader use across projects and learners.
Performer Business	$7,200/year; one-time set-up and training fee: $2,700	50 users. The separate setup and training fee makes the first-year commitment higher than the annual price alone.
Performer Enterprise	Custom pricing	50+ users, unlimited client-developed content, additional content development, Single Sign-On integration, priority support, custom SLAs, and simulation advisors.
Epicenter Enterprise	Custom pricing	1,000+ end-user authentication, unlimited authenticated projects, custom SSO options, custom SLAs, and simulation advisors.
Custom Simulations	Custom pricing	A fully tailored simulation developed with Forio's team.

Epicenter Personal includes community forum support. Applicable paid Epicenter tiers include enhanced forum, email, and phone support during office hours. Professional and Business publish fixed authentication and project caps, so teams should match those allowances to expected deployments; Enterprise is the option for more than 1,000 authenticated users or unlimited authenticated projects. Pricing information also lists SAML/LTI authentication for applicable plans.

Platforms

Forio supports web delivery, APIs, and self-hosting. Self-hosting applies to a project's user interface on the customer's web server while the project continues to use Epicenter APIs; it is not described as a fully independent installation. The cloud and on-premises deployment options give teams flexibility over where Epicenter runs.

Who it's for

Learning and development leaders, educators, and instructional designers are the core audience. Ready-made simulations suit teams looking for business learning content with team and asynchronous formats. Epicenter suits technical teams that can make use of modeling languages, APIs, and deployment controls. Custom development is better suited to organizations whose learning scenario needs to be built around their requirements. Performer serves teams focused on branded role-play and facilitated feedback.

Pros and cons

Pros

Multiple routes to a learning simulation: ready-made content, a developer platform, and customer-owned custom development serve different levels of specificity.
Useful modeling and integration breadth: support for Python, R, Julia, Vensim, and Stella, alongside JavaScript and REST interfaces, can accommodate varied technical stacks.
Deployment and access controls: cloud or on-premises deployment, OAuth 2.0, role-based access, and customer-hosted interfaces address needs beyond a basic hosted exercise.
Clear published Epicenter capacity tiers: Professional and Business define user-authentication and project limits, helping teams size a deployment.

Cons

The free tier cannot serve authenticated learners: zero authenticated projects and zero end-user authentication confine it to project work rather than private learner delivery.
Capacity remains bounded on paid Epicenter plans: Professional allows 200 authenticated users across 5 projects; Business allows 1,000 across 10, so larger deployments point toward custom-priced Enterprise.
Performer Business has an added upfront charge: its $2,700 one-time setup and training fee sits on top of the $7,200/year subscription.
Several routes require a sales conversation: Performer Enterprise, Epicenter Enterprise, and Custom Simulations use custom pricing, making costs harder to compare upfront.

Alternatives

For a broader set of choices, browse Business Simulation Software.

The Business School offers a free six-step teacher demo with no PIN or licence; consider it when a no-cost demonstration is the immediate need.
Marketplace Simulations sells individual microsimulations for $8 per student, with short 10–25 minute exercises and replay; it suits a team seeking discrete, low-cost activities rather than a broader simulation platform.
GoVenture is another simulation option.
MonsoonSIM offers a single-course education subscription at USD 20 per learner for six months, with fixed class size; it may fit a course that wants a defined learner-term price.
Revas Business Simulation Games is another business simulation option.
SD Games Online is another option for corporate trainers and universities, and also develops bespoke games with clients.
SimVenture offers a £50.00 per year personal license for a single user's personal use; consider it for individual use rather than a team deployment.
GLO-BUS offers a $44.95 one-time simulation-only option per student, with instructor materials and course-length registration; it suits a course seeking a defined per-student option.

Verdict

Forio is the right choice for educators and learning teams that need strategy-focused interactive learning and want either ready-made business simulations or a path to custom, model-connected experiences. Its developer and deployment flexibility is the strongest reason to choose it; the main reason to look elsewhere is the zero-authentication free tier and the custom pricing required for larger or more tailored deployments.
