Overview

FreeBooth is open-source freeware for building a photo booth around a PC-connected camera. It is a strong fit for hosts who can manage a tethered-camera setup and want core booth functions without a software bill. Its main trade-off is a workflow built around local hardware and transfer software rather than a defined event-service plan.

Key features

FreeBooth works with cameras that transfer images to a PC through tethering software, including DSLRs; the homepage says supported cameras can connect by USB or WiFi. Canon EOS Utility and gphoto2 are tested transfer options. That flexibility will appeal to organizers who already own suitable camera gear, but camera compatibility and transfer setup are prerequisites, not details to leave until event day.

Capture is photo-only and works offline. Hosts can enable printing, disable printing, or turn off email sharing. Guests can share photos by email, with sending deferred until an internet connection becomes available. This gives an offline event a way to queue sharing, but it does not remove the eventual need for connectivity.

An embedded server lets devices on the same network as the booth PC view the latest photo and a slideshow. It gives guests a local viewing option without making the booth dependent on a remote gallery, though its reach is limited to that network. Color customization offers a modest way to align the booth with an event.

Pricing

The FreeBooth plan is freeware at 0.00 USD per free, with offline capture, printing support, lead capture, photo capture modes, and a live event gallery. There is no paid tier or free trial. For hosts who need a free photo booth and can supply the camera setup themselves, that is a clear advantage; teams seeking a priced service plan with defined tiers should compare commercial alternatives instead.

Platforms

FreeBooth supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. The download page names Windows 7, 8, and 10, Linux, and Mac OS X, and requires Java 7 or higher. That makes the Java requirement and the specific supported-system list worth checking against the booth computer before committing. The download page lists English, Russian, and German.

Who it's for

FreeBooth suits DIY event hosts and small teams with a PC, compatible camera, and willingness to configure tethering software. It is less suitable when the priority is a broad set of capture modes, a service tier with published device and storage allowances, or a booth workflow that avoids camera-transfer setup. The maker invites questions and feature requests and says it will try to help, but that is not a substitute for a defined support commitment.

Pros and cons

Pros: Freeware includes offline photo capture, printing support, lead capture, and a live event gallery, avoiding a software charge for core booth use.
Pros: Email sharing can wait until connectivity returns, while printing and sharing can each be disabled for events that do not need them.
Pros: The local slideshow and latest-photo view work for devices on the booth PC's network, and hosts can adjust colors for an event.
Cons: Camera use depends on a compatible PC-transfer workflow, so organizers need to verify both camera and tethering software beforehand.
Cons: Photo-only capture and a network-local slideshow may fall short for teams that need broader booth modes or gallery access beyond the local network.
Cons: Java 7 or higher is required, adding a runtime dependency to the event-computer checklist.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Photo Booth Software. Booth.Events is the alternative to consider for an iPad, Mac, or iPhone-centered setup with gallery storage and uploads; its Basic plan specifies one device and three months of storage, while its Pro plan includes one iPad/Mac and unlimited iPhones. Curator Live fits teams looking for a freemium option with a per-event paid tier: Standard costs 29.00 USD per once for one capture-device license, with additional device licenses at $19.

LumaBooth is worth considering when a paid, multi-platform product and a standalone sharing station matter; LumaShare is 7.99 USD per month. Snappic is a better fit for a team that wants a paid booth license, event templates, and SMS and email sharing, with its Starter plan at 69.00 USD per month. Touchpix is the alternative to assess when Android support and unlimited devices are priorities; its PhotoPass plan is 25.66 USD per month, billed annually.

AI Photo Booth Pro is for teams seeking a paid option with multiple booth modes and a two-device Starter plan. Breeze Booth offers another paid option for iOS, web, and Windows. Fiesta is an iOS and web alternative with a paid Plus plan billed annually.

Verdict

Choose FreeBooth if you want a no-cost, locally run photo booth and already have a camera and PC-transfer workflow you can support. Offline capture, optional printing and email, and a local slideshow make it useful for straightforward events. Look elsewhere if camera compatibility, Java setup, or the limits of a photo-only, local-network workflow do not fit the event.
