Overview

frePPLe links forecasting to inventory, replenishment, and production planning, so teams can carry demand expectations into stock and production decisions. That joined-up scope is a stronger fit for planning teams working across those functions than for buyers seeking a production scheduler alone.

Founded in 2011, the project began as an open-source hobby project. Its planning spans forecasting at SKU-location granularity, inventory policies, and production constrained by material supply and resource capacity.

Key features

Forecasting: Statistical and AI techniques, method selection, hierarchical forecasting, and collaborative review and editing give teams ways to refine demand plans at product-location level. This is useful when forecasts need shared ownership rather than being treated as a fixed input.
Production planning: Finite material and resource capacity constraints make schedules more grounded in supply and available capacity. An interactive Gantt chart lets planners adjust jobs, which suits teams that need to work directly with the plan.
Inventory and replenishment: Safety stocks and reorder quantities feed replenishment orders, while item segmentation and tailored business rules support differentiated policies. These capabilities help connect inventory targets to operational planning.
Integration: REST API, CSV, Excel, and direct database access offer several routes into an existing stack. Community also includes two-way Odoo integration, a specific advantage for teams using that platform.
Scenario planning: Scenarios are supported, but Cloud is capped at six. That may be enough for a focused set of planning alternatives, but teams that routinely compare more cases should consider Enterprise’s unlimited scenarios.

Pricing

Plan prices are custom pricing. Subscription pricing is based on active item-location pairs, and the displayed calculator describes a size below 20,000 pairs. That basis makes the number of active product-site combinations more relevant than a simple user count when evaluating cost.

Plan	What it includes	Best fit
Community	Free open-source edition; multilingual browser application; Ubuntu Linux binaries and Docker images; DIY support through the user group.	Teams prepared to manage deployment and rely on community support, including those wanting to assess an open-source option.
Cloud	Hosted deployment with professional support; maximum six scenarios.	Teams wanting hosted service and professional support whose scenario needs fit the cap.
Cloud PLUS	Hosted on frePPLe cloud servers with doubled resource allocation; scenarios limited by storage.	Teams needing greater resource allocation in a hosted environment, with scenario volume governed by storage.
Enterprise	Installed on customer hardware, with unlimited scenarios and professional support.	Organizations that need on-premise control, including where policy or regulation may rule out cloud hosting.

A 15-day trial is offered. Academic users can request a free scheme by contacting the company. Community’s trade-off is DIY support; Cloud’s is the scenario ceiling, while Cloud PLUS ties scenario volume to storage. Enterprise removes the scenario limit and keeps hosting on customer infrastructure, but carries custom pricing.

Platforms

frePPLe supports API access, Linux, self-hosting, and web use. Community is a multilingual browser application, and Community and Enterprise provide Ubuntu Linux binaries and Docker images. Cloud and Cloud PLUS are hosted by frePPLe; Enterprise is installed on customer hardware.

Who it's for

frePPLe is a strong candidate for manufacturing and supply-chain teams that want forecasts, inventory targets, replenishment, and capacity-aware production plans in a connected workflow. Community suits technically capable teams comfortable with DIY support; Cloud suits those preferring hosted service and professional support; Enterprise suits organizations needing customer-side hosting or unlimited scenarios. It is less compelling for teams whose needs are narrowly limited to scheduling or whose scenario requirements exceed Cloud’s cap.

Pros and cons

Pros

Connected planning scope: Forecasting, inventory, replenishment, and production planning can inform one another rather than being handled as isolated tasks.
Constraint-aware production plans: Material supply and resource capacity are accounted for, with a Gantt chart for job adjustments.
Deployment choice: Open-source Community, hosted options, and customer-hosted Enterprise cover distinct control and support needs.
Integration flexibility: REST API, file formats, database access, and two-way Odoo integration in Community provide multiple stack entry points.

Cons

Cloud scenario cap: Six scenarios can constrain teams that compare many planning alternatives.
Pricing basis requires sizing: Active item-location pairs drive subscription pricing, so organizations should assess their planning footprint rather than infer cost from seats.
Community support is self-directed: DIY user-group support may not suit teams needing professional assistance.

Alternatives

Phoenix APS is worth considering for a free beta evaluation on Windows, but its temporary evaluation license is not licensed for production use.
EDGEBIC may suit buyers seeking finite-capacity scheduling and optimization with a one-time perpetual license; its APS plan is 25000.00 USD per once and has no material planning features listed.
SkyPlanner APS is an option for teams needing web and mobile access with a five-workstation plan and the ability to add scheduled production resources.
APS4MFG is an alternative with API and web platforms, a free trial, and an Odoo-focused maker.
NETVIBES is another paid platform with a free plan and web, mobile, and self-hosted availability.
GE Vernova Proficy Plant Applications offers hosted or on-premises deployment for process, discrete, and mixed manufacturing.
PlanetTogether APS is an alternative available as a subscription or perpetual license, with subscription fees paid annually in advance.
Schantt is a freemium web alternative.

Verdict

Choose frePPLe if your team needs forecasts, inventory policies, replenishment, and capacity-aware production planning connected, and can match its deployment model to your support and control requirements. Its broad planning scope and flexible hosting are the central reasons to consider it; look elsewhere if six Cloud scenarios are insufficient or if you need pricing that does not depend on active item-location pairs.
