Overview

Fresh’s Orchestrator gives each task a separate Git worktree, tab, terminal, and agent. That structure can keep parallel tasks apart while preserving a shared editing and review workflow. Fresh is positioned as a companion to a full IDE, not necessarily its replacement, so it fits best where terminal work is already central.

Workspaces can run locally, over SSH, in Kubernetes, or in a dev container. This range makes Fresh relevant to developers working across local and remote environments, though it does not by itself establish how any particular team should configure those environments.

Key features

Agents and Git review

Fresh can run Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or a user-supplied command. The choice of agent is flexible, while the Orchestrator provides a consistent per-task workspace around it. That is a practical fit for developers coordinating agent-driven changes; users who do not work with coding agents have less reason to choose Fresh over a conventional editor.

Git review includes hunk-level staging, unstaging, and discarding, side-by-side diffs, and review notes that can be exported to Markdown. These controls support selective review without requiring every change to be accepted as a whole.

Editing and language support

Editing tools include multi-cursor support, keyboard macros, Vim mode, regex search and replace, and project-wide search. Fresh supports multiple language servers per language and provides configurations for Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go, Java, C/C++, Ruby, and others. Compiler diagnostics and Rust navigation are supported, useful for developers who want language-aware editing without leaving the terminal-oriented environment.

The product says it can open multi-gigabyte files without blocking the interface. Plugins are written in TypeScript and run sandboxed inside Fresh’s single binary, an approach that combines extensibility with a stated execution boundary.

Terminal and privacy

The integrated terminal supports multiple tabs, split placement, scrollback, and keyboard capture mode. Fresh sends anonymous telemetry covering its version, operating system and architecture, and terminal type; its maker says it collects no personal data, file contents, or usage behavior. Upgrade checks and telemetry can be disabled with fresh --no-upgrade-check or the check_for_updates setting. Teams with strict telemetry policies should review those controls before adoption.

Pricing

Fresh is free and open source: the Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later. No paid tiers or usage limits are stated, so there is no cheaper plan with reduced features to weigh against a paid option. This makes it a straightforward choice for individuals and teams comfortable with the license; organizations should consider the GPL-3.0-or-later terms in their own software policies.

Platforms

Fresh supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, and also supports self-hosted use. Remote development can run over SSH, in Kubernetes, or in a dev container. That combination suits teams spanning desktop operating systems and remote infrastructure, while the platform list does not include mobile systems.

Who it's for

Fresh is best suited to developers who want IDE-style editing in a terminal and use coding agents as part of their work. Its worktree-per-task approach and hunk-level Git review are especially relevant when keeping agent-driven changes isolated and inspecting them selectively matters. It is a weaker fit for readers seeking a conventional standalone IDE or a workflow that does not involve terminal-based development.

Pros and cons

Pros

Per-task Git worktrees pair each task with its own tab, terminal, and agent, helping separate parallel work.
Hunk-level Git controls, side-by-side diffs, and exportable Markdown notes make selective review part of the editing workflow.
Local and remote workspace options cover SSH, Kubernetes, and dev containers in addition to local work.
Free, open-source distribution has no stated usage limits or paid tiers.

Cons

Fresh is designed to work alongside a full IDE, so it may not suit developers looking for one conventional IDE to serve every need.
It sends limited anonymous telemetry by default; privacy-conscious teams need to use the documented disable controls.
The GPL-3.0-or-later license may require review against an organization’s software policies.

Alternatives

Zed is a reasonable alternative for readers who want a free code editor with external-agent or API-key support and a 2,000 accepted edit-prediction allowance on its Personal plan.

Kate is a free text editor for Linux, Windows, and macOS for readers seeking an alternative without Fresh’s agent-orchestration emphasis.

Lapce is a free, open-source code editor for readers considering another open-source option.

Qt Creator offers an open-source version for readers working with Qt, subject to LGPL/GPL obligations.

RustRover has a free non-commercial plan for qualifying learning, self-education, open-source contributions, content creation, and hobby development.

CodeLite is a free GPLv2 IDE for readers who prefer an IDE over a terminal-oriented editor.

GNOME Builder is a free Linux desktop option for readers whose work is Linux-only.

Huly Code is another free option for readers comparing code tools.

Verdict

Choose Fresh if you want an open-source, terminal-centered editor that organizes coding-agent work into separate Git worktrees and includes selective review tools. Its broad remote-workspace support and free plan strengthen the case, but the companion-to-a-full-IDE design and GPL-3.0-or-later license make it less compelling for teams seeking a conventional, standalone IDE or a different licensing model.
