Overview

Terrain can start from procedural forms, imported data, or hand-drawn elements. Physics-driven simulations cover erosion, debris, glaciers, rivers, snow, and vegetation; Gaea can also generate terrain-aware color, textures, masks, material zones, vegetation data, and flow maps. That breadth is useful when a landscape needs more than a heightfield, though the value depends on whether the project uses those supporting outputs.

Exports include heightfields, meshes, point clouds, textures, masks, and other terrain data. Bridges for Unreal Engine and Houdini help connect terrain work to those environments, but the Gaea2Houdini plugin is limited to Professional and Enterprise. Node-based compositing and a hybrid render engine round out the workflow.

Key features

Multiple terrain inputs: Procedural, imported, and hand-drawn starting points suit both generated landscapes and work built from existing data or artist-drawn elements.
Terrain simulation and surface data: The simulation range and terrain-aware outputs support detailed landscape authoring, especially where downstream work needs masks, material zones, or flow maps alongside terrain.
Production exports and bridges: A wide set of export types serves varied downstream needs. Unreal Engine and Houdini bridges are useful workflow links, but Houdini users need a Professional or Enterprise license for Gaea2Houdini.
Security and license constraints: QuadSpinner says its binaries are signed with a code-signing certificate and provides an installer VirusTotal report. Gaea must connect to the internet at least once every 28 days to refresh its license; Enterprise customers can obtain offline licenses for additional cost. Use of Gaea or its assets to train AI systems is prohibited without QuadSpinner's prior written consent.

Pricing

Gaea is freemium. The Community Edition has no published price, supports single builds up to 1,024 × 1,024, and is limited to non-commercial use. It is suitable for non-commercial projects that can stay within that resolution ceiling, not paid production work.

Indie costs 99.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time price for a perpetual license. It allows single builds up to 8,192 × 8,192, one named user on up to two computers, and is intended for individuals or businesses under US $100,000 in annual gross revenue or capital. It is the entry paid tier for eligible small operators, but the lower single-build ceiling and revenue limit matter for growing businesses.

Professional costs 199.00 USD per month, also billed as a one-time price for a perpetual license. It raises single-build resolution to 16,384 × 16,384 and supports tiled worlds up to 262,144 × 262,144, with one named user on up to two computers and a revenue limit under $1,000,000. This is the relevant tier for users who need the Houdini plugin or larger terrain builds.

Enterprise costs 299.00 USD per month, billed as a one-time price for a perpetual license. It offers the same stated single-build and tiled-world resolution limits as Professional, but licenses one machine per license and is for revenue over $1,000,000. Offline licenses are available at additional cost. Support, maintenance, and minor updates are included at no additional cost across the product, but there is no guaranteed support SLA.

Platforms

Gaea runs on Windows and requires a CPU that supports AVX2 and at least 16 GB of RAM. GPU compute requires CUDA 12.5 or higher or HIP 6.0 or higher, although CPU-only use is supported. Teams on macOS or Linux should look elsewhere; Windows users without a compatible GPU can still use CPU-only processing.

Who it's for

Gaea suits terrain artists and production teams in games, VFX, and virtual production who need simulation, terrain-aware surface data, and multiple export formats in one workflow. It is a poor fit for commercial users who only qualify for the non-commercial Community Edition, teams that need macOS or Linux support, or users who cannot accommodate periodic internet license checks.

Pros and cons

Pro: Terrain inputs range from procedural forms to imported data and hand-drawn elements, giving artists multiple ways to begin a landscape.
Pro: Simulations, surface-data generation, and exports cover more than terrain shape alone, helping production teams prepare related assets and data.
Pro: CPU-only use is supported, so compatible GPU compute is not mandatory.
Con: Windows is the only supported platform, with AVX2 and 16 GB RAM minimum requirements that constrain hardware and operating-system choices.
Con: The license must refresh online at least every 28 days unless Enterprise users pay extra for offline licensing, which can complicate disconnected workflows.
Con: Resolution, revenue eligibility, and seat or machine terms differ by edition; the Houdini plugin also excludes Community and Indie users.

Alternatives

World Machine is worth considering for teams that need Linux or macOS support as well as Windows; it has a free plan, and its Indie plan includes one year of updates, though the supplied plan details also cite a four-thread limit.

Heightmap Level Generator is a free option across self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms, with no install or account required for its free plan.

MapMagic 2 is a free choice for Windows and macOS users seeking a core asset with map generators; its Biomes and Functions add-on costs 45.00 USD per once and requires the core installation.

Ymir is a free GPL-3.0 option for Linux and Windows users.

3D Dungeon Generator is a free web-based creator for dungeon layouts, with presets from 16×16 to custom 60×60 dimensions and GLB export.

Mapgen4 is a free, self-hosted or web option from Red Blob Games maker Amit Patel, whose work focuses on interactive explanations of math and algorithms.

WaveFunctionCollapse is a free option for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; its repository license credits Maxim Gumin with copyright in 2016.

Dungeon Generator for Unreal Engine 5 is another freemium option.

Verdict

Choose Gaea if your Windows-based terrain workflow needs simulation, surface-data generation, and production-ready exports, and your team fits the edition's resolution and licensing terms. Look elsewhere if you need cross-platform support, unrestricted offline licensing, or a lower-tier Houdini bridge; its breadth is compelling only when those constraints fit your pipeline.
