Overview

Gavel Exec handles contract review and drafting inside Microsoft Word and online. Gavel Workflows converts client intake answers and templates into completed Word documents and PDFs through structured workflows. Together, they cover agreement work and repeatable document production, but they are separate offerings with different plans and limits.

Exec can redline full agreements, draft clauses, apply playbooks, compare terms with market data, and provide traceable explanations. Workflows supports integrations such as Clio, Zapier, DocuSign, and Stripe, with API access on higher tiers. Gavel also offers conditional logic, a questionnaire builder, a clause library, and Microsoft Word export.

Key features

Contract review and drafting

Playbooks and traceable explanations support a more consistent review process and give lawyers a way to examine the reasoning behind contract suggestions. Market comparisons and clause drafting are useful for teams that want review and drafting in the same tool; teams seeking document assembly alone may not need Exec.

Document automation

Workflows turns intake responses and templates into finished documents, which suits firms producing repeatable client paperwork. Its workflow and session caps make plan sizing important for higher-volume operations. Clio is included at Lite, while Zapier arrives at Standard and DocuSign and Stripe at Pro.

Security and support

Gavel Exec is SOC 2 Type II certified. Gavel describes isolated customer databases and subdomains, encryption in transit and at rest, regular third-party security testing, and Zero Data Retention commitments with AI providers for Exec. Gavel advertises unlimited support and free onboarding and training for teams; Lite and Standard include phone, screen share, and email support, while Pro adds priority support.

Pricing

Gavel has no free plan, but offers a seven-day trial. The Gavel Exec free trial costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 25 free queries per user and shared Workspace collaboration during the trial.

Gavel Workflows Lite: 83.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 1 Builder/Admin seat, 10 workflows, 200 fields per workflow, 100 sessions/month, 500 GB storage, Clio integration, and phone, screen share, and email support. This is the entry point for a small team with modest automation needs.
Gavel Exec: 160.00 USD per month, billed monthly, or $1740/user billed annually. Paid plans include 1,000 completions per month, and discounted team pricing is available for 10+ seats. It fits users focused on AI contract work, but the monthly completion allowance should be weighed against expected usage.
Gavel Workflows Standard: 165.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 1 Builder seat, 25 workflows, unlimited fields per workflow, 300 sessions/month, Zapier integration, and phone, screen share, and email support. The additional workflow capacity and fields make it a better fit than Lite for more varied processes.
Gavel Workflows Pro: 290.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 2 Builder seats, 50 workflows, 600 sessions/month, DocuSign, Stripe payments, custom domain and branding, 1 TB storage, and priority support. This tier suits teams needing more throughput, integrations, and branded delivery.
Gavel Workflows Scale: 417.00 USD per year, billed annually, annual payment only. It includes everything in Pro plus discounted per-seat pricing, custom usage limits, API access, SSO, integration support, and white-glove onboarding. Its unlimited workflows and customizable usage make it the tier for larger or more complex deployments.

Annual Workflows plans billed upfront get 2 months free. The lower tiers trade workflow capacity, sessions, seats, storage, and integrations for lower monthly costs; API access is reserved for Scale. Choose based on whether the workload is contract review or document automation rather than treating the suite as one bundled plan.

Platforms

Gavel lists API, macOS, web, and Windows support. Workflows API access is on Scale, so buyers who need programmatic integration should account for that tier boundary.

Who it's for

Gavel is designed for transactional attorneys, law firms, and legal teams. Exec is the closer fit for teams reviewing and drafting agreements; Workflows is for firms that repeatedly turn intake and templates into documents. Occasional users may find the paid entry point and workflow limits harder to justify.

Pros and cons

Pro: Exec combines full-agreement redlining, clause drafting, playbooks, and market comparisons, supporting a broader contract-review process than drafting alone.
Pro: Workflows provides a tiered path from Clio integration to Zapier, DocuSign, Stripe, and Scale API access.
Pro: Exec's SOC 2 Type II certification, encryption, and stated Zero Data Retention commitments address important data-handling concerns for legal teams.
Con: There is no free plan, and Workflows Lite starts at 83.00 USD per month, making it a paid commitment for even a small automation workload.
Con: Lite, Standard, and Pro cap workflows at 10, 25, and 50 respectively; Scale is required for unlimited workflows and API access.
Con: Exec and Workflows use separate plans, so teams needing both contract work and automation must evaluate each offering rather than assume one subscription covers both.

Alternatives

For a different fit, consider Docassemble, which is free self-hosted software with no software fees; hosting typically costs $10–$40 per month or more depending on performance, availability, and support needs. Avvoka is another paid alternative.

Compare Gavel's document production against XpressDox, whose Essential plan is 59.00 USD per month per user and whose Professional plan is 79.00 USD per month per user. ClauseBase is an alternative for buyers considering drafting and questionnaire tools.

For narrower needs, Wealth.com focuses on estate planning, while Dokuily offers a free plan for common simple documents and unlimited clean downloads for free documents. Trust & Will offers estate plan creation through a free basic membership, and A2J Author is free for eligible legal aid organizations, government entities, courts, or other nonprofits for non-commercial use.

Verdict

Gavel is a strong candidate for transactional legal teams that need either structured document automation or AI-assisted contract review, especially when traceable contract explanations and legal workflow integrations matter. Its main drawback is the cost and tiering: buyers should look elsewhere if they need a free starting point, require API access below Scale, or have occasional work that cannot justify a paid plan.
