Overview

Imgflip Meme Generator is an online editor for making memes and custom graphics from templates, uploaded images, or a blank canvas. It is best suited to people who want a large template pool and detailed controls in one tool. The trade-off is that free exports carry a watermark, and link sharing needs care when privacy matters.

Key features

More than 1 million user-uploaded templates make it easy to start from an established meme format; users can also upload images from a device or URL, or begin with a blank template. The editor goes well beyond captions, with image and sticker additions, drawing, spacing, filters, cropping, rotation, flipping, and vertically stacked meme chains. That range makes Imgflip useful for posters, banners, advertisements, and other custom graphics, though teams needing a controlled private-sharing workflow should account for how images are exposed.

Font support includes device-installed fonts and more than 1,300 free fonts, giving users room to match a design’s style. Animated templates show up in search, and users can browse GIF templates or make their own with GIF Maker. Pro extends animated work with sound on GIFs, up to 1,600 GIF frames, and video segments up to 240 seconds. AI creation tools and background removal are also paid features, with unlimited AI creation and background removal on Pro.

The Slack app creates and posts memes in channels through /imgflip text commands, a useful fit for teams that want meme creation inside their chat workflow. API authentication uses Bearer tokens, and Imgflip says it stores only a hash of each API key. But API-created images are public by URL, and the caption_image API has no private option, so it is a poor fit for integrations that must keep generated images private.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes more than 1 million meme templates, but exports carry an Imgflip watermark and ads are shown. It suits occasional use where branding and ads are acceptable; the watermark makes it less suitable for polished work delivered to clients.

Basic costs 4.95 USD per month, billed yearly with 17% savings. It is limited to memes, but adds AI creation tools, background removal, watermark removal, and ad-free use. This is the lower-cost fit for people who mainly make static memes and want clean exports; it gives up GIFs and other animated work.

Pro costs 11.95 USD per month, billed yearly with 20% savings. It includes GIFs and memes, unlimited AI creation and background removal, watermark removal, ad-free use, sound on GIFs, up to 1,600 GIF frames, and 240-second video segments. Choose it for heavier AI use or longer animated creations; otherwise, its broader limits may be more than a meme-only workflow needs.

Platforms

Imgflip is available on web, Android, through an extension, and via API. There are no mobile apps, so Android access should not be mistaken for a dedicated mobile app. The Slack integration offers a separate route for creating and posting memes within channels.

Who it's for

Imgflip fits meme-makers, social teams, and designers who value a broad template library, fine-grained editing, and the option to move from static images to GIFs. The Free plan is a reasonable starting point when watermarking is acceptable; Basic fits meme-focused users who need watermark removal, while Pro is the stronger choice for GIFs, sound, and higher creation limits. It is less appropriate for private API-driven workflows because API-generated images are public by URL and cannot be marked private through caption_image.

Pros and cons

Pro: A library of more than 1 million user-uploaded templates, plus uploads and blank templates, covers both familiar meme formats and custom starting points.
Pro: Detailed image controls, extensive font options, GIF tools, and graphics use cases give the editor scope beyond basic captioning.
Pro: Basic removes watermarks and ads for static meme work, while Pro adds sound, longer GIFs, and longer video segments.
Con: Free exports include a watermark and ads, limiting their suitability for professional-looking deliverables.
Con: Images are public by link unless marked private, and private images cannot be shared by link; API-created images are public and caption_image offers no private setting.
Con: Basic is memes-only, so GIF and video work requires the higher-priced Pro plan.

YouInMeme suits someone looking for a daily free creation allowance across mobile and desktop platforms. GottaMeme is a free web alternative with daily AI caption and visual quotas plus unlimited manual editing, sharing, and downloads without a watermark. MemeFast is a freemium alternative available on Android, iOS, and web.

Verdict

Choose Imgflip if your priority is a deep meme-template library paired with flexible editing and a path to GIF creation. Look elsewhere when private API-generated images are essential, or when the free-plan watermark is unacceptable and you do not want a subscription.
