Overview

GIPHY Create is a free tool for making short GIFs from images, video, and online media, then adding captions, stickers, filters, or other edits. It is best suited to people who want to turn a short clip or image into something shareable, including users who prefer to record on a phone. Its breadth of inputs is useful, but desktop account and video limits narrow the fit for longer or account-free workflows.

Key features

GIPHY Create accepts JPG, PNG, and GIF images alongside MP4, MOV, and WebM video, and can pull media from GIPHY, YouTube, Vimeo, and other sources. Sticker artwork can be uploaded as JPG or PNG. This covers common local files and hosted clips, so users need not download a source first when a supported URL is available.

Editing includes captions, stickers, layer changes, and cropping; the maximum GIF length is 15 seconds. Desktop videos must be under 100 MB and less than 15 seconds long, which makes the maker a sensible choice for brief snippets but a poor match for longer footage unless it is trimmed before upload. Desktop creation requires a GIPHY account, a real barrier for people who want a quick one-off without signing in.

Creations can be shared through social platforms, text message, and email. Users can also mark a GIF private during creation, but that setting is strictly personal: only the logged-in creator can view it, and it cannot be shared. The mobile GIFMaker app adds recording, captions, effects, stickers, and trimming, making it a better route when the source is being captured on a phone rather than selected from desktop files.

For app teams, GIPHY offers an API and SDK to integrate GIFs, stickers, and other GIPHY content. New API keys are beta keys capped at 100 searches or API calls per hour. Production access requires an application and a pricing discussion, so teams should treat the API as a route to evaluate rather than assume unrestricted production access.

Pricing

GIPHY Create is free: the GIPHY Create plan is 0.00 USD per free. That makes it a straightforward fit for individual GIF creation without a paid tier to budget for, while the practical cost is the account requirement and the short-video constraints rather than a subscription.

API access has a different decision point. Beta keys are limited to 100 searches or calls per hour, and production use requires an application and pricing discussion. Teams planning an integration should resolve that access and pricing path before building around the service.

Platforms

GIPHY Create is available on web, Android, and iOS. The desktop GIF Maker runs in a browser and enforces the under-100-MB, under-15-second video limits; the mobile app supports recording and trimming as well as decorative edits. That division suits users who source clips on desktop or capture them on a phone, though the desktop sign-in requirement applies to creation.

Who it's for

Choose GIPHY Create for short, shareable GIFs made from common image and video formats or supported media URLs, particularly if mobile recording and editing matter. It is less suitable for long source video, anonymous desktop use, or a team that needs private sharing: private creations cannot be shared. Developers can consider the API and SDK for embedding GIPHY content, but should account for the beta quota and production application process.

GIPHY says it uses industry-standard techniques to store personal data, while cautioning that account information security cannot be guaranteed. It also states that covered personal-data transfers comply with the EU-U.S., UK Extension, and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks. Account or product questions go through GIPHY support.

Pros: Mobile recording and editing provide a practical path from capture to GIF on Android and iOS.
Cons: Desktop video must be under 100 MB and less than 15 seconds, limiting use with longer footage.
Cons: Desktop creation requires a GIPHY account, and private GIFs cannot be shared.
Cons: API beta access is capped at 100 calls or searches per hour; production access entails an application and pricing discussion.

Gifox is a macOS alternative with a basic plan limited to 10-second screen recordings and a Pro plan at 14.99 USD per month, billed as a one-time purchase with taxes included. Honeycam is another freemium option for Windows, while LICEcap is a free choice for macOS and Windows.

Verdict

GIPHY Create is a strong fit for individuals who want a free, cross-platform way to turn short clips, images, or hosted media into decorated, shareable GIFs. Its input range and phone-based recording are the clearest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your workflow needs longer desktop video, desktop creation without an account, shareable private work, or predictable production API access without an application and pricing discussion.
