Overview

Gitar is a code change verification agent for teams that want pull-request review and CI failure diagnosis in one workflow. It is best suited to engineering groups working across multiple repositories and CI systems, especially those willing to set rules for automated fixes.

Its strongest case is the combination of contextual review, root-cause analysis and rule-governed remediation; the per-user pricing and 50-user cap on Core and Pro make team size an important part of the decision.

Key features

Gitar reviews pull requests using codebase and team-convention context, then consolidates findings and adds inline notes where relevant. That approach is useful when reviewers need actionable feedback tied to the code, rather than a disconnected list of generic observations.

For failing CI, it distinguishes pipeline breakage from flaky tests and infrastructure noise, and identifies likely root causes. Gitar can also commit fixes to a branch and iterate until CI passes, but teams can set review, fix, escalation, approval and merge rules in repository files. Those controls make automation more governable; teams that want to approve every change manually can use the review and diagnosis capabilities without treating autonomous fixes as a requirement.

Dashboards cover review and CI performance, with cross-repository trends on Pro. Supported code hosts are GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps, including various self-hosted instances. CI integrations include GitHub Actions, GitLab Pipelines, CircleCI, Buildkite, Bitrise, Harness, TeamCity and Jenkins. Pro adds Slack, Linear and Jira integrations.

Language coverage spans common languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, Go, C#, Ruby, Rust and TypeScript, along with infrastructure formats including Terraform, Kubernetes/Helm and CloudFormation. Enterprise adds further coverage including ABAP, COBOL and JCL. Gitar also provides security analysis, quality gates, technical-debt tracking and remediation workflows.

Code and data are deleted after an agent run and are not used by Gitar or its LLM providers to train models. Sonar maintains ISO 27001:2022 certification and SOC 2 Type II attestation across its products and services. Enterprise customers can request beta regional cloud processing in the EU, Singapore, Australia or Japan; these AWS-hosted instances are not enabled by default.

Pricing

Free for Open Source costs 0.00 USD per free, at no cost, and provides Pro plan features for public GitHub or GitLab repositories with an OSI-approved license. It is a useful way for qualifying open-source projects to access the higher-tier feature set, but it does not serve private repositories.

Core costs 20.00 USD per month, billed at $20/ user / mo billed annually or $25/ user / mo billed monthly. It includes unlimited public and private repositories, up to 50 users and a 14-day free trial. It is the lower-cost paid fit for teams that need private-repository coverage but do not need Pro's listed collaboration integrations or cross-repository analytics.

Pro costs 40.00 USD per month, billed at $40/ user / mo billed annually or $50/ user / mo billed monthly. It also supports unlimited public and private repositories, up to 50 users and a 14-day free trial, and adds Slack, Linear and Jira integrations plus cross-repository analytics. That premium is most defensible for teams that will use those connections or need broader performance trends.

Enterprise has custom pricing and agreements, unlimited public and private repositories, unlimited users, API access and dedicated support. It also includes SSO/SAML, custom deployment options, audit logs and custom integrations. This is the tier to consider when the 50-user paid-plan ceiling or enterprise controls are decisive; teams should weigh custom terms against their deployment and support needs.

Platforms

Gitar is a cloud service with web and API access and self-hosted code-host support. Its ability to work with self-hosted instances of supported code hosts can fit established infrastructure, while the cloud deployment means it is not itself described as a self-hosted deployment.

Who it's for

Gitar suits startups through enterprise engineering teams shipping code at high volume, particularly those using GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or Azure DevOps alongside one of its supported CI systems. It is also a credible option for teams that want review and CI trends across repositories or want a policy layer around automated branch fixes.

It is less compelling for a small group that only needs a basic code scanner, or for larger teams that need unlimited seats but cannot take on Enterprise custom pricing. Teams that need a fully self-hosted Gitar deployment should also look elsewhere: the deployment model is cloud, despite support for self-hosted code-host instances.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines contextual pull-request review with CI diagnosis and fixes, reducing the need to treat review feedback and pipeline recovery as separate workflows.
Pros: Repository-file rules let teams govern review, remediation, escalation, approval and merge behavior rather than relying on unbounded automation.
Pros: Supports four major code hosts and a broad set of CI systems, including self-hosted host instances.
Pros: Open-source projects can receive Pro features at no cost when using a qualifying public GitHub or GitLab repository.
Cons: Core and Pro are priced per user and capped at 50 users, so growing teams may need Enterprise custom pricing.
Cons: The Open Source offer is restricted to public repositories with an OSI-approved license, not private projects.
Cons: Cloud deployment may not suit teams that require the product itself to run self-hosted.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, start with Static Analysis Tools, Code Quality Management Software, Code review software or AI Code Review Tools.

Choose Snyk Open Source instead if dependency analysis is the priority: its free plan covers five projects and access to Snyk Open Source SCA, while Gitar centers on pull-request review and CI workflows.

Qodana is a reasonable alternative for teams seeking a code quality platform with a free Community plan and support for self-hosted deployment. Semgrep Code may suit teams that want code and supply-chain coverage in a free edition capped at 10 repositories and 10 contributors.

CodeChecker is a free alternative. Understand is another option, with a paid annual subscription and a minimum 12-month term. For teams focused on web application and API testing, Veracode DAST offers a paid product with a free trial. Checkmarx API Security is a paid alternative spanning SAST, SCA, API Security and ASPM. Squish is a paid testing alternative with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose Gitar if your team wants contextual pull-request review, CI root-cause diagnosis and controlled automated fixes across its existing code hosts and pipelines. Its policy controls and broad integrations are the strongest reasons to choose it; per-user pricing, the 50-user paid-plan cap and cloud-only deployment are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
