Overview

GitLab Package Registry gives teams a place to publish packages for downstream projects, with private or public access for supported package managers. It suits teams already building in GitLab who want package publishing tied to project permissions and CI/CD. Its strongest case is that integrated workflow; format maturity and lower-plan resource caps are the main reasons to compare alternatives.

Key features

Formats and automation

Generally available formats include Generic packages, Helm, Maven, npm, NuGet and PyPI. Composer and Conan are beta, while Debian, Go and Ruby gems are experimental; Conda, CRAN, RPM and Swift are unsupported. That covers several common ecosystems, but teams relying on beta or experimental support should avoid making it a critical publishing path without accounting for that maturity.

A project can host multiple package types, including packages built from a monorepo. The registry can be administered through an API, and Generic packages support API access for automation. GitLab CI/CD can build or import packages, with jobs authenticating through CI_JOB_TOKEN. This is a practical advantage for teams already using GitLab pipelines; it is less compelling if package workflows live elsewhere.

Access, protection and audit

Project roles govern access. In private projects, Reporters can view and pull packages, while Developers can publish them. Package protection rules can restrict who may push or delete matching packages, with documented support for npm, PyPI, Maven and Conan. These controls help align package operations with project responsibilities, though the documented format scope is narrower than the full registry format list.

Package publication and deletion can generate audit events when the namespace setting is enabled, but audit events require Premium or Ultimate. The dependency proxy caches upstream packages to reduce external downloads and speed builds; it is beta and also limited to Premium and Ultimate. Teams that need either capability should include the tier restriction in their plan decision.

For npm audits, GitLab forwards requests to npmjs.com by default to retrieve vulnerability information. GitLab warns that audit request bodies can include private package information, so teams should weigh that behavior against their security and privacy requirements.

Pricing

The registry is included in Free, Premium and Ultimate, and is available on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated. Free is 0.00 USD per free, billed per user/month, with a cap of 5 users per top-level group, 400 compute minutes/month and 10 GiB adjustable storage. It is a credible starting point for small teams, but the user, compute and storage limits can constrain growing build workloads.

Premium is 29.00 USD per year, billed per user/month annually, with 10,000 compute minutes/month and 500 GiB storage. It fits teams that need more capacity or Premium-only audit events and dependency proxy access; Priority Support is also included. Ultimate uses custom pricing and provides 50,000 compute minutes/month and 500 GiB storage, making it the higher-capacity option where those included limits fit the workload and the added tier is justified.

A 30-day trial is available. GitLab states paid-plan support is 24/7 for Emergency severity and 24/5 for other impact levels. The free tier preserves access to the registry, but gives up the larger compute and storage allowances and the Premium/Ultimate-only capabilities.

Platforms

GitLab Package Registry supports API, Linux, self-hosted and web environments. Its presence across GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated gives teams a choice of deployment context rather than requiring a hosted-only registry.

Who it's for

Choose it when GitLab already anchors source control and CI/CD, and you want package publishing, role-based access and automation close to the projects that produce and consume packages. It is a weaker fit for teams whose core package formats are unsupported, or whose required formats remain beta or experimental. Teams that need auditing or upstream caching should budget for Premium or Ultimate rather than assume those functions come with the registry at every tier.

Pros and cons

Pros

CI/CD is part of the workflow: GitLab jobs can build or import packages and authenticate with CI_JOB_TOKEN.
Project-level access controls: roles govern package use, while protection rules can limit pushes and deletions for supported formats.
Multiple package types per project: this accommodates monorepo package workflows without separating each type into its own project.
Deployment choice: the registry is available on GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated.

Cons

Uneven format maturity: Composer and Conan are beta, Debian, Go and Ruby gems are experimental, and several other formats are unsupported.
Key capabilities are tier-gated: audit events and the beta dependency proxy require Premium or Ultimate.
Free-plan capacity is bounded: 5 users per top-level group, 400 compute minutes/month and 10 GiB adjustable storage can be restrictive for active teams.
npm audit requests leave the registry context: forwarding to npmjs.com may expose private package information in request bodies.

Alternatives

For a broader application lifecycle management comparison, see Application Lifecycle Management Software. Innoslate is a paid option with a free plan for educators and students who sign up with a .edu account; it may suit that audience better. ONES has a free tier for up to 30 seats, while Rally Software offers a free Starter Edition for 50 named users in listed countries. SAP Cloud ALM is free for eligible support customers, with one tenant per customer number. Tuleap is a freemium alternative with commercial plans tailored to users, hosting and support needs; Digital.ai TeamForge, IBM Targetprocess and Kovair ALM are other alternatives, with pricing or licensing details requiring a separate evaluation.

Teams specifically comparing model registry tools can browse Model registries; adjacent categories include Game Version Control Software, Preview Environment Software, ML Experiment Tracking Software and GitOps Tools.

Verdict

GitLab Package Registry is the right choice for teams already using GitLab CI/CD that want package publishing and access control in the same project workflow. Its main advantage is integration, while format maturity and the Premium/Ultimate gate on auditing and dependency proxy are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere or budget higher.
