Overview

VictoriaMetrics is built for high ingest rates, fast queries, and long-term metrics retention. Its wider observability scope includes metrics, logs, and traces, with open-source, cloud, and enterprise offerings. That breadth makes it a candidate for teams standardizing monitoring without giving up deployment choice; it is not a SQL database, so teams that require SQL support should look elsewhere.

Prometheus-compatible scraping and PromQL-compatible workflows lower friction for existing Prometheus environments, and MetricsQL adds another query option. The product also accepts data through a broad range of protocols and formats, which is useful when a stack spans several monitoring tools.

Key features

Ingestion and querying

Alongside Prometheus scraping, remote write, and exposition, ingestion options include InfluxDB line protocol, Graphite plaintext, OpenTSDB, JSON line, CSV, native binary, DataDog, NewRelic, OpenTelemetry, and a Zabbix Connector. This flexibility can reduce the need to reshape data before sending it to the database. Grafana datasource support for logs extends its reach beyond metrics.

PromQL-compatible workflows help teams carry familiar query practices forward, while MetricsQL gives them a VictoriaMetrics-specific alternative. Retention policies and horizontal scaling support longer-lived and growing workloads, though the right deployment still depends on a team's operational capacity and chosen plan.

Operations and security

VictoriaMetrics Cloud is fully managed, with automated backups, software updates, managed operations, and dedicated resources per deployment. Its security features include TLS/HTTPS, JWT, LDAP, SSO, identity-provider integration, and mTLS between cluster components. The company says its information security management certifications comply with ISO/IEC 27001:2013 requirements.

Pricing

The model is freemium: open-source software is free, while cloud starts at 200.00 USD per month and enterprise pricing is custom pricing. The cloud price is a starting point rather than a universal bill; capacity tiers have deployment limits and hourly usage metering.

Plan	Price	What it includes
VictoriaMetrics Open Source	0.00 USD per free	Free single-node or cluster versions for metrics monitoring.
VictoriaMetrics Cloud — VictoriaMetrics	200.00 USD per month	From $200/month; 500k active time series, 16.6k datapoints/sec, 170 GB daily read volume, and business-hours support.
VictoriaMetrics Cloud — VictoriaLogs	200.00 USD per month	From $200/month; 800 logs/sec, 0.8 MB/s ingestion, 50 new streams/24 hours, 4.6 GB/sec read rate, and business-hours support.
VictoriaMetrics Enterprise	Custom pricing	Launchpad, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers, with features and support varying by tier.

Open source is the fit for teams able to operate the software themselves and wanting a free single-node or cluster option. Cloud suits teams that prefer managed operations and can work within tier limits; its 30-day free trial offers a way to evaluate the service. Enterprise is aimed at teams needing expert technical support and guidance, but the tier choice and price require a custom discussion. Community users instead have open-source community support options.

Platforms

VictoriaMetrics supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. On-premises, hybrid, and cloud deployment options give teams room to fit it around an existing stack, while the managed cloud service shifts operational work to the provider.

Who it's for

It is a strong fit for platform and observability teams that need a scalable metrics store, Prometheus-aligned workflows, or a common destination for data from multiple monitoring systems. Small teams can start with open source; growing businesses and teams with production workloads at scale can consider cloud or enterprise support. Organizations standardizing observability should weigh the breadth of ingestion and deployment options against the work of self-hosting or the metered limits of cloud.

Pros and cons

Pro: Open-source single-node and cluster editions provide a no-cost route for teams prepared to run their own metrics infrastructure.
Pro: Prometheus compatibility plus MetricsQL and broad ingestion support can accommodate mixed monitoring environments.
Pro: On-premises, hybrid, and managed cloud deployment let teams choose how much infrastructure they operate.
Con: It does not support SQL, ruling it out for workflows that depend on SQL queries.
Con: Cloud capacity limits and hourly usage metering mean the starting price alone does not determine the bill.
Con: Enterprise pricing is custom, so teams must engage with the vendor to assess that tier's cost.

Alternatives

Checkmk is worth considering for teams who prioritize its 2000+ pre-built integrations and a community plan covering up to ~100 hosts, rather than VictoriaMetrics' metrics database focus.

Nagios XI offers a free tier capped at 7 Nodes or 100 Services, whichever comes first; teams whose monitoring fits that allowance may prefer its free, self-supported route.

Akamai Cloud Longview has a free option for up to 10 clients, with 5-minute resolution and 12 hours of history, making it an option for a narrower, short-history setup.

Mackerel may suit teams whose needs fit its free plan's 5 standard and micro hosts, 500 metrics, and 1 day of retention.

Zabbix is another freemium monitoring option for teams comparing open-source and support tiers.

Robusta is an alternative for teams considering its open-source core and AI SRE offering.

Sysdig Monitor is an alternative with cloud-native monitoring and host-based or time series-based licensing.

Atatus API Analytics is an alternative for API analytics buyers, with custom pricing based on infrastructure size, data volume, and monitoring needs and a 14-day trial.

Verdict

Choose VictoriaMetrics if your team wants a high-ingest metrics database that can align with Prometheus workflows, accept data from a broad mix of systems, and run either self-hosted or as a managed service. Its main advantage is that flexibility across ingestion and deployment; its main drawback is that cloud costs depend on metered capacity and enterprise pricing requires a custom quote. Teams needing SQL or a fixed, straightforward cloud bill should look elsewhere.
